Start by identifying the car’s chassis, engine, market specification and modifications: early PGC10/KPGC10 and KPGC110 GT-Rs use the S20, while R32, R33 and R34 GT-Rs use the RB26. Their maintenance needs and diagnostic procedures differ, so a symptom list is only a starting point—not a substitute for the correct workshop manual or an inspection of the individual car.
For R32–R34 cars, areas worth investigating include engine condition and maintenance, turbochargers, the timing-belt system, ATTESA, Super-HICAS, corrosion and modification quality. Early S20 cars need a different kind of specialist attention, notably carburetor synchronization, valve-clearance work and careful verification of scarce parts. The sources available for these issues do not establish representative failure rates, so treat them as inspection priorities rather than proof that a particular GT-R is faulty.

Identify the GT-R before diagnosing it
“Classic Skyline GT-R” spans cars with substantially different engines and systems. Applying an R32 procedure to an early S20 car—or assuming an R32, R33 and R34 are interchangeable—can send diagnosis in the wrong direction. Confirm what is actually fitted, especially on a modified car, before ordering parts or interpreting symptoms.

Establish what the car is now, not just what it was built as
Before troubleshooting, record the chassis and engine identifiers and establish the car’s market and service history. Ask whether the engine, engine-management or other control systems, driveline and chassis components are original or modified. A stock-car assumption may not fit a car with altered hardware, and the parts presently installed may not correspond to the model’s original specification.
This is especially important when interpreting a warning, unusual handling or an engine complaint: first establish which equipment is present, then select the diagnostic information for that configuration. A model designation alone does not tell you whether a past owner changed the relevant system. Keep a written list of observed modifications and unresolved questions; it helps a mechanic avoid treating the car as an unmodified example when it is not.
Use a staged diagnostic process on R32–R34 cars
The R32 factory manual lays out a useful sequence: “Customer interview → Problem confirmation → Self-diagnosis → Basic inspection → Inspection for individual systems → Confirmation test.” Treat that as a workflow, not as permission to skip the manual’s system-specific tests. Nissan describes its factory-authorized service manuals as detailed service and repair references; use the edition that matches the vehicle and market.
- Record the complaint and conditions. Note what the car does, when it happens, and the conditions under which it occurs. Establish whether the symptom is repeatable before drawing conclusions.
- Confirm the symptom. Reproduce it safely and distinguish the reported issue from any symptoms that are not present. A fault that occurs only under particular operating conditions may not show up during an unrelated check.
- Check basic items and records. Review maintenance documentation and inspect relevant basic items before moving to an individual-system diagnosis. Missing service history is not proof of a fault, but it means the condition needs to be established rather than assumed.
- Run the applicable self-diagnosis. Follow the matching manual’s procedure and interpret results in the context of the actual complaint. A warning lamp or stored diagnostic result should lead to the manual’s next checks, not an automatic parts replacement.
- Inspect the relevant system. Use the exact model’s procedures and specifications. Do not transfer a test value or adjustment from another generation simply because the cars share an engine family or system name.
- Repeat the confirmation test. After diagnosis or repair, verify that the original symptom has changed as expected under the conditions that produced it.
The order helps separate what the owner reports from what can be demonstrated. For example, a warning lamp, a leak and abnormal handling are useful observations, but each needs to be tied to the system and test that can explain it. Record what was checked and what the result was, including when a step could not be completed. That makes follow-up diagnosis more informative than a parts list based on assumptions.
Engine, turbocharger and timing-system concerns
RB26 oil-pump drive and engine condition
Specialist buying guides flag the RB26 oil-pump drive as an inspection concern, particularly in hard-revved cars. They describe a possible loss of oil pressure with potentially serious engine damage. That is a warning to investigate condition and history—not a quantified failure rate, nor evidence that a specific car has suffered the problem.
For a car under consideration, look for documentation of the engine’s build and maintenance and have its condition assessed by a qualified mechanic. If oil-pressure behavior is part of the complaint, it deserves diagnosis using the correct service information rather than being dismissed or attributed to a familiar reputation. The available material does not provide a universal diagnostic threshold or repair specification, so those details must come from the car’s manual and configuration.
Ask what evidence supports any claim that the engine has been inspected or rebuilt. The useful distinction is between a documented service or build and an unsupported statement that a known concern has already been “taken care of.” Review records alongside the current engine condition; paperwork does not replace inspection, and a concern mentioned in a guide does not establish that the car needs a particular repair.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Turbocharger condition and the boost system are among the checks recommended by an R32 buyer guide. A prospective buyer should have both examined as part of a broader engine assessment, alongside the car’s service and modification history. A change in performance alone does not establish which component is responsible; determine the actual configuration and follow the appropriate inspection procedure.
The cited R32 guide recommends compression and leak-down checks on all cylinders and a marque-specialist inspection. These checks can contribute to an assessment of engine condition, but they do not replace a review of the car’s records or a system-specific investigation when a particular symptom is present.

- 100% Satisfaction: Our products have quality assurance, if you have questions or are not satisfied after receiving the product, don't worry, please contact us as soon as possible, we provide after-sales service.
For a pre-purchase inspection, make the scope explicit: ask the shop to report on all-cylinder compression and leak-down results, the turbochargers, the boost system, and the records it reviewed. A check of one area should not be presented as a complete engine verdict. If the car has changes from its original configuration, have the inspection account for those changes rather than assuming a standard setup.
Timing belt
Nissan identifies the RB26 applications in the R32, R33 and R34 GT-R as belt-driven. Check dated service documentation and inspect the belt system according to the exact factory manual. If records are absent or unclear, do not assume the belt has been serviced based on the car’s age or a seller’s general description; establish its status using the correct procedure and qualified advice.
Because no single interval for all regions and operating conditions is established in the available sources, avoid applying a generic interval as though it were a universal Nissan specification. Confirm the applicable schedule for the vehicle’s market and use.
When comparing two cars, a dated record for the relevant work is more useful than a vague assurance that maintenance is current. Confirm that the record belongs to the car and relates to the correct model and work. If documentation is unavailable, treat the service status as unknown, not as proof that the belt has or has not been maintained.
Diagnose ATTESA and Super-HICAS complaints systematically
Warning lamps, abnormal handling, leaks or unusual driveline behavior on a car equipped with these systems warrant system-specific diagnosis. Specialist buying guides flag ATTESA pump and transfer-case health, as well as HICAS actuator condition, as inspection topics. These are not diagnoses in themselves: establish which system is involved and follow the matching manual before deciding what needs repair.
HICAS: follow the factory diagnostic flow
For abnormal vehicle behavior, the R32 manual’s diagnostic flow begins with basic checks rather than an immediate assumption that the HICAS unit has failed. It calls for checking alignment and tightening torque, carrying out a driving verification, running self-diagnosis, and proceeding to static and dynamic HICAS inspection as indicated. The relevant flow also calls out steering-wheel neutral position and steering-angle sensor condition.
Use the R32 manual for the actual test steps and specifications, and use the corresponding manual for other generations. A handling complaint can call for checks beyond HICAS, so the sequence matters: verify the complaint and basic vehicle condition, then let diagnostic results guide further inspection.
In practical terms, do not treat “the rear feels strange” as enough to identify an actuator fault. Note when the behavior occurs, confirm it during a safe driving verification, and check the basic alignment and tightening items named by the factory flow. The manual’s next step depends on the observations and self-diagnosis; static and dynamic checks, neutral steering-wheel position and steering-angle sensor condition belong within that guided process.
ATTESA: verify system condition rather than guessing from a symptom
ATTESA pump and transfer-case health are identified as buyer-inspection topics, but the available sources do not provide a symptom-to-component chart, universal test values or failure-rate data. If the car has an ATTESA warning, leak or unusual driveline behavior, document the conditions, confirm the system’s fitted configuration, and use the correct service information or a specialist familiar with the car. Do not infer that one named component is at fault from a general complaint alone.

When evaluating a car, include ATTESA condition among the items a specialist is asked to inspect rather than relying on the absence of a warning during a short viewing. The cited material supports checking the pump and transfer-case health, but it does not set out a complete DIY test or authorize a conclusion from a single observation. Ask for findings and the basis for them, and distinguish a confirmed fault from a recommendation for further inspection.
Inspect the body, corrosion and repair quality
Rust and poor repairs can matter as much as a mechanical fault when evaluating a classic GT-R. Arrange a thorough inspection on a lift. The cited R32 buyer guide highlights wheel arches, chassis rails and the rear-subframe area, and recommends a paint-depth gauge as one way to investigate bodywork history. The gauge is only a clue: it does not establish structural condition or identify every repair.
R32 inspection priorities
- Inspect the wheel arches and chassis rails directly, including the underside where visible.
- Examine the rear-subframe area for corrosion, damage or signs of repair.
- Use paint-depth readings as supporting information, then inspect the metal, seams, repair work and underside condition themselves.
- Ask for repair and maintenance documentation, and compare it with the condition of the car.
Early-car corrosion priorities
Guides to early GT-Rs specifically call attention to sills, rear arches, floors, strut towers and screen surrounds. On a rare early car, inspect these areas carefully and seek documentation or photographs for significant repair work where available. The presence of a repair is not by itself proof of poor work; the quality, extent and documentation need to be assessed on the individual shell.
Why repair evidence matters
Paint readings, photographs and seller descriptions can help direct an inspection, but none substitutes for examining the structure. A lift inspection should focus on the condition of the shell and the quality of repairs rather than treating a single tool reading as a pass-or-fail result. If the inspector cannot establish the condition of a structural area, that uncertainty should remain part of the buying decision.
A paint-depth gauge can support a bodywork review by indicating where readings differ, but it cannot tell you whether a chassis rail is sound or whether a repair was carried out properly. Use it to decide where a closer look is warranted, then inspect the area itself. On an early car, preserve and review available repair photographs and documentation; for any generation, ask the inspector to explain what was directly visible and what remains concealed or uncertain.

The early PGC10/KPGC10 and KPGC110 cars use the S20, not the RB26. Nissan’s Heritage Collection identifies the 1972 KPGC10 and describes its S20 engine. The distinction is practical: early-car checks and service procedures should not be borrowed from an R32–R34 guide.
Carburetor synchronization and valve clearances
Specialist guides identify regular synchronization of the triple sidedraught carburetors and shim-under-bucket valve-clearance work as S20 maintenance needs. For an early car, have a mechanic with S20 knowledge assess carburetor balance, valve clearances and engine condition. Do not treat an engine that starts or idles as proof that these maintenance items are correctly set.
When commissioning an inspection, ask specifically whether the mechanic has assessed synchronization across the triple carburetors and the shim-under-bucket valve clearances, rather than just whether the engine runs. The sources identify these as maintenance needs, but do not provide universal adjustment values or intervals; the right procedure and specification must come from the correct S20 information for the car.
Manuals, parts and provenance
A listed 1973 KPGC110 Nissan manual includes S20 inspection and adjustment, timing-chain tension adjustment, lubrication, carburetor fault diagnosis and engine repair sections. Confirm the exact model and manual edition before using any procedure; the existence of a manual for one KPGC110 does not establish that it is correct for every early GT-R.

GT-R-specific parts and S20 internals may be difficult to source compared with shared body and trim components. For a prospective purchase, ask what parts have been replaced, whether their provenance is documented and whether the car’s maintenance can be supported by someone familiar with the S20. A specialist’s view is particularly valuable when the condition or originality of engine components is uncertain.
Parts availability changes the practical comparison between an early car and an RB26 car: the early car’s S20-specific internals and GT-R-only components may be harder to source than shared body or trim pieces. The sources do not establish prices or a universal wait time, so avoid treating scarcity as a specific repair estimate. Instead, identify the parts already fitted, retain supporting provenance where possible, and establish specialist support before a repair is needed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Assess a car without turning inspection leads into failure claims
The available specialist guides are useful for deciding where to look, but they do not establish representative incidence rates or a reliable ranking of the “most reliable” GT-R generation. There is no sound basis here for assigning a percentage to oil-pump-drive, turbocharger, ATTESA, HICAS or corrosion problems. Assess the particular car rather than treating a commonly mentioned issue as inevitable.
A practical comparison between cars should weigh their documented maintenance and engine condition, body corrosion and repair quality, equipment and modifications, system condition where ATTESA or HICAS is fitted, and the availability of suitable parts and specialist support. For an S20 car, the parts and expertise question deserves particular attention. A well-documented inspection is more useful than a generation-wide reliability label.
Recommended Free Tools
For example, comparing an early S20 car with an R32 is not simply a choice between two engine reputations. The relevant axes are generation and originality, records and present engine condition, shell and repair quality, the condition of fitted driveline or steering systems, and access to appropriate parts and expertise. A different generation may mean different procedures and support needs, but the available sources do not justify declaring one generation universally more reliable.
Likewise, a list of commonly discussed issues should guide the inspection plan, not predetermine its result. The oil-pump drive concern applies as an inspection lead to RB26 cars, while the cited carburetor and valve-clearance work is S20-specific. ATTESA and HICAS checks apply only to cars equipped with the systems. Record which concerns actually apply to the individual car and which checks have produced evidence of a problem.
When to use a specialist
Use a marque specialist when diagnosis depends on GT-R-specific systems, when a prospective purchase needs engine and body assessment, or when an early S20 car requires work on its carburetors, valve clearances or scarce internals. For R32–R34 cars, the specialist should still work from the manual and configuration appropriate to the vehicle rather than relying on broad model-family assumptions.
Before authorizing work, ask the shop to distinguish observed evidence from suspected causes, identify the inspection or test supporting its conclusion, and explain whether a proposed procedure applies to the car’s exact model and modifications. That makes it easier to decide whether the next step is further diagnosis, repair, or monitoring—and reduces the risk of replacing parts based solely on a familiar reputation.

Common questions
These answers summarize inspection guidance, not population-wide failure statistics. A symptom is a reason to investigate, not proof of a particular failed part.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are common R32 GT-R problems to check before buying?
Treat the RB26 oil-pump drive, turbocharger and boost-system condition, timing-belt service history, ATTESA and HICAS condition, corrosion and modifications as inspection priorities. Specialist guides flag these areas, but do not provide representative failure rates. A pre-purchase check should include compression and leak-down checks on all cylinders, review of records, and a marque-specialist inspection.
How do I diagnose a Skyline GT-R HICAS fault?
Use the correct factory manual and follow its sequence. The R32 flow for abnormal vehicle behavior includes checking alignment and tightening torque, driving verification, self-diagnosis, and then static and dynamic HICAS checks as indicated. It also calls out steering-wheel neutral position and steering-angle sensor condition. A handling symptom alone does not prove the HICAS unit has failed.

How can I tell whether an RB26 timing belt has been serviced?
Look for dated documentation for the car, then verify the belt system according to the exact factory manual. Nissan identifies the RB26 in R32, R33 and R34 GT-R applications as belt-driven, but the available sources do not establish one universal interval for every market and use case. If records are unclear, treat service status as unknown and have it checked.
What should I check on an early S20 Skyline GT-R?
Have an S20-knowledgeable mechanic assess engine condition, synchronization of the triple sidedraught carburetors, and shim-under-bucket valve clearances. Inspect early-car corrosion areas including sills, rear arches, floors, strut towers and screen surrounds. Verify parts provenance and use a manual that matches the exact model and edition.
Can a paint-depth gauge confirm that a Skyline GT-R is rust-free?
No. It is an optional clue for investigating bodywork and repair history, not a structural diagnosis. Inspect the shell directly on a lift, including the relevant wheel arches, chassis rails or rear-subframe area on an R32, and examine seams, repairs and underside condition. A reading cannot establish whether concealed structure is sound.
Is one classic Skyline GT-R generation more reliable than another?
The cited sources do not support a universal reliability ranking or representative failure-rate comparison. Compare the individual cars by generation and originality, documented maintenance and engine condition, corrosion and repair quality, ATTESA/HICAS condition where fitted, and parts and specialist support. Early S20 cars have distinct maintenance and parts considerations.

The Bottom Line
Identify the chassis, engine, market and modifications before diagnosing a classic Skyline GT-R. Use the exact factory manual, follow a staged process, and treat familiar problem areas as inspection leads—not automatic diagnoses or failure statistics. For R32–R34 cars, check RB26 condition, turbochargers, timing-belt records, ATTESA/HICAS where fitted, and the shell; for early S20 cars, prioritize carburetor synchronization, valve clearances, corrosion, parts provenance and specialist support. A careful, documented inspection is more useful than a generation-wide reliability label.
