The first step with any Mercedes-Benz E 63 AMG is to identify its model year, engine, market, body style, maintenance history, modifications and 17-digit VIN. The E 63 name covers several engine and platform combinations, so a problem documented for one version cannot be treated as a defect in every car.
The strongest current manufacturer evidence concerns two targeted situations: an extended emissions-related warranty for specified 2015–2016 E-Class E 63 variants using the M157 engine, and a Mercedes technical bulletin describing timing-area noise after extended standstill on M156 and M159 AMG engines. What “common problems” means for an E 63 AMG
There is no representative, independent failure-rate study that can support a single reliability percentage for all E 63 AMG cars. The model spans different engines, years and markets, and the way a car was serviced, modified or driven can matter as much as its badge. A complaint database, a technical service bulletin, an extended warranty and a recall are different types of evidence:

Which cars are covered
A Mercedes-Benz USA bulletin dated March 13, 2026 extends coverage for specified model-year 2015–2016 E-Class variants equipped with the M157 engine, including listed E 63 AMG and E 63 S 4MATIC designations. Eligibility is determined by the vehicle identification number and the conditions in the bulletin. A car that appears to match the year and badge should still be checked by a Mercedes-Benz dealer or Mercedes-Benz USA before you authorize customer-pay work.
What the bulletin says can happen
The documented fault path starts with a leaking vacuum pump. Mercedes-Benz states: “If the vacuum pump leaks, the oil could contaminate the pressure transducer and cause it to malfunction.” The bulletin associates that condition with inconsistent turbocharger pressure, an illuminated check-engine malfunction indicator lamp and possible limp-home mode. Depending on the diagnosis, the pressure transducer, vacuum pump, vacuum lines or related components may need repair or replacement.
How the coverage changes the repair decision
The original new-vehicle limited warranty term described in the bulletin is 4 years or 50,000 miles. For eligible vehicles and the specified condition, coverage is extended to 15 years or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first. This is an extended warranty provision, not a declaration that every M157 has a defective part and not a substitute for a recall lookup.

- Record the full VIN, current mileage, model year and exact E 63 designation.
- Ask a Mercedes-Benz dealer to check the VIN for the M157 coverage before paying for a pressure-transducer, vacuum-pump or vacuum-line repair.
- Describe the symptoms and provide any diagnostic report. An illuminated malfunction lamp or reduced-power event does not, by itself, prove that this bulletin applies.
- Request a written explanation of which component failed, which components will be replaced, and whether the work is being processed under the extended coverage.
- If coverage is declined, ask for the reason in writing and obtain a second diagnosis from an independent Mercedes-AMG specialist before approving an expensive parts list.
The bulletin does not publish a customer-pay price. Parts availability, labor time, regional labor rates and the extent of oil contamination can change the invoice substantially. Do not buy a pressure transducer solely because its name appears in the bulletin; the component should be confirmed by diagnosis and VIN-specific fitment.
M156 and M159 timing-area noise after extended standstill
The documented symptom
A Mercedes technical bulletin dated January 10, 2018 addresses vehicles with M156 or M159 AMG engines that develop noise from the timing area after sitting for an extended period. The bulletin describes a diagnostic path rather than a population-wide failure statement. A noise heard on one cold start is not enough to conclude that an engine needs a timing repair.
Factory diagnostic sequence
- Warm the engine and the engine oil fully.
- Check the oil level and correct it if necessary.
- Reassess the noise after the engine and oil are warm.
- Use Mercedes Xentry diagnostic equipment to test the relevant adjuster.
- Replace an affected adjuster only when the diagnostic procedure confirms that it is the source of the condition.
This sequence matters because a sound immediately after a long standstill can change as oil reaches operating temperature. The bulletin does not provide a public repair price or an incidence rate. A shop that recommends parts solely from a cold-start recording, without checking oil level and performing the specified test, has not demonstrated that the bulletin’s condition is present.

Diagnosis, location, labor rate, parts source, model year and the scope of related work can move a final bill outside any published range. Ask for an itemized quote that separates diagnostic time, parts, labor, fluids, taxes and any required programming or adaptation.
How to check recalls, campaigns and complaint history
Start with the VIN, not the model year
Mercedes-Benz USA says its recall-information page provides the most complete and current US information when you enter the vehicle’s 17-digit VIN. The page also states that it does not provide recall information for non-US vehicles. A car imported from another market therefore needs the appropriate market’s recall process, not an assumption based on a US result.

- Run the VIN through the Mercedes-Benz recall system for the market where the car is registered.
- Record both open and completed campaigns and ask who performed completed work.
- Check NHTSA resources for recalls, complaints, investigations and manufacturer communications relevant to the VIN, year or component.
- Give the records to the inspecting technician and ask whether any symptom on the car matches an open campaign or a manufacturer bulletin.
NHTSA makes complaints, investigations and manufacturer communications available as research leads. They are not denominators, so they cannot tell you the percentage of E 63 AMG vehicles that will experience a given failure.
What an all-years complaint count means
Repair Surge’s E63 AMG all-years NHTSA data view, refreshed October 13, 2026, reported 88 owner complaints, 15 recalls and 298 technical service bulletins. Those are aggregated records in a third-party database view. They combine model years and conditions, may include duplicate or differently documented events, and do not establish prevalence, severity or the risk for an individual vehicle. Use them to identify questions for a VIN-specific inspection, never as a reliability rating.
Pre-purchase inspection: a practical E 63 AMG checklist
Collect the car’s identity and history
- Write down the model year, engine designation, market, body style, exact trim and VIN.
- Request invoices rather than relying on a service-book stamp or verbal description.
- Look for evidence of oil services, cooling-system work, brake work and diagnostic repairs, with dates and mileage.
- Ask whether the car has engine, turbocharger, exhaust, software, suspension or electrical modifications.
- Check whether modifications were professionally installed and whether original parts are included.
Inspect and scan before driving
- Have a technician scan all relevant control units with Mercedes-capable equipment, not just a generic code reader.
- Save current and stored fault codes and freeze-frame information before clearing anything.
- Inspect for oil contamination around vacuum-related components on an M157 car when symptoms suggest the documented pressure-transducer path.
- On an M156 or M159 car, document any timing-area noise after an extended standstill, then follow the warm-oil and adjuster-testing procedure rather than guessing from sound alone.
- Check for warning lamps, reduced-power operation, rough running, stalling, hard starting or inconsistent boost, and note exactly when each symptom occurs.
Drive under controlled conditions
Start the car from cold only after the inspector is present, and record ambient temperature and how long the vehicle sat. Listen without revving the engine immediately. Repeat the observation after the oil is warm. During the road test, note whether a warning lamp appears, whether power is reduced, and whether the symptom returns under repeatable conditions. A quiet test drive does not prove that a stored fault or intermittent issue is absent.

Obtain written quotes before negotiating
Ask both a Mercedes-Benz dealer and an independent Mercedes-AMG specialist, where available, for written estimates based on the same VIN and diagnostic findings. Require each quote to state the parts brand or source, labor hours, warranty on the repair, diagnostic charge, taxes, programming and any “while accessible” work. For an M157 vehicle, verify extended-coverage eligibility before comparing customer-pay totals.
What to do when an E 63 AMG develops a symptom
Check-engine lamp, inconsistent boost or limp-home mode on an M157
- Drive only as far as necessary to reach a safe location if the car is running poorly or has reduced power.
- Do not erase codes before they are recorded.
- Have the technician test the vacuum pump, pressure transducer and vacuum lines and determine whether oil contamination is present.
- Provide the VIN to a Mercedes-Benz dealer and ask for a coverage decision under the specified M157 bulletin.

Timing-area noise on an M156 or M159 after sitting

Sensor or brake symptoms
A crankshaft-position or knock-sensor code can result from wiring, connectors, power supply, calibration or another underlying fault. Brake-hose replacement should be based on a physical inspection and hydraulic condition, not on a generic age assumption. In each case, ask the shop to show the failed component or test result and to identify whether the estimate covers one part or a complete system repair.

When one car has a documented, VIN-eligible manufacturer coverage path and the other has only an unverified symptom, the coverage status can be more valuable than a small difference in purchase price. Conversely, a completed repair with strong documentation may be preferable to an apparently untouched car with no diagnostic records.
Questions to ask a seller, dealer or specialist
- What is the exact VIN, engine code and market history?
- Has the car ever entered limp-home mode or displayed a check-engine lamp?
- Are there cold-start noises, and how long had the car been parked when they occurred?
- Which recalls, campaigns or warranty repairs are open or completed?
- Has the car been modified, and are the original components available?
- Can I receive the diagnostic scan and itemized quote before authorizing work?
- For a 2015–2016 M157 vehicle, has Mercedes-Benz confirmed eligibility for the extended pressure-transducer, vacuum-pump and vacuum-line coverage?
- Does the quoted amount include diagnosis, parts, labor, fluids, programming, taxes and a repair warranty?
Bottom line for E 63 AMG ownership decisions
The useful question is not whether every Mercedes-Benz E 63 AMG is reliable or unreliable. It is whether the specific car has a documented condition, a confirmed diagnosis, a VIN-eligible repair path and a written estimate. For specified 2015–2016 M157 E 63 variants, verify the extended coverage before paying for pressure-transducer, vacuum-pump or vacuum-line work.
