The documented issues below apply only to defined vehicles and markets—not to every EcoSport. A clean recall result is useful, but it does not prove that an EcoSport is mechanically sound.
Current evidence identifies a U.S. front-seat compliance campaign for certain 2018 EcoSports, an Australian timing-belt tensioner notice covering 160 listed vehicles, and a U.S.-reported rearview-camera software recall affecting certain 2020–2021 EcoSports. No reliable source in this evidence establishes a model-wide ranking of engine, transmission, electrical, suspension or other recurring failures.

Start with the VIN, not just the model year
Recall applicability is vehicle-specific. A year, make and model search can show that a campaign exists, but only the 17-character VIN can tell you whether the particular EcoSport has an unrepaired recall. Use the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s recall, complaint and investigation resource at NHTSA.gov.
- Copy the VIN from the dashboard plate, driver-door label and title or registration. The numbers should agree.
- Enter the VIN in NHTSA’s recall lookup.
- Save or print the result and ask the seller for invoices or dealer repair orders for every completed campaign.
- If the result is unclear, contact a Ford dealer with the VIN and ask whether the remedy was performed and recorded.
NHTSA says an unrepaired recall will be displayed for the VIN and that a recall does not expire once a vehicle has been recalled. The agency separately lists recalls, investigations, owner complaints and manufacturer communications. A complaint is an owner report, not a government finding that a defect exists. Conversely, no open recall does not certify the vehicle’s engine, transmission, cooling system or other components.

Documented EcoSport campaigns to investigate
Certain 2018 U.S. vehicles: front-seat replacement campaign
Ford compliance recall 18C08 concerns “Certain 2018 Model Year EcoSport Vehicles.” The notice, hosted by NHTSA at the campaign document, describes identifying affected front seat(s) by VIN and replacing them at no charge.
This is not evidence that every 2018 EcoSport has a defective seat. Ask the seller to show a VIN-specific completion record, then check that the invoice identifies the affected seat and the repair date. If the campaign remains open, arrange the free dealer remedy before treating the vehicle as ready to buy. Also inspect the seat physically: check that it locks firmly on its tracks, the backrest latches, belts retract, and warning lights behave normally. Those observations supplement the recall check; they do not replace it.
Australian notice REC-000311: timing-belt tensioner spring
The Australian Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts published notice REC-000311 on 17 September 2018. It lists 160 affected units. On those listed vehicles, engine vibration could cause the timing-belt tensioner spring to fail, potentially resulting in loss of engine timing, engine shutdown or damage. The notice directs owners to an authorized Ford dealer for inspection and rectification: Australian recall REC-000311.

Treat this as an Australian-market notice for the VINs in that notice. It is not proof that all EcoSport engines, all 2018 vehicles, or vehicles sold in other countries share the condition. If you are considering an Australian-market import or a car originally sold in Australia, compare its VIN with the notice and request proof of the dealer rectification. For any EcoSport, an independent technician should still listen for abnormal belt-area noise and review timing-belt service history; do not diagnose a failed tensioner from noise alone.
Certain 2020–2021 vehicles: rearview-camera software recall 25S72
On 2 July 2025, the Associated Press reported that Ford recall 25S72 covered certain 2020–2021 EcoSports along with other Ford and Lincoln vehicles. The rearview camera could show a blank image or remain displayed after the vehicle was shifted out of reverse. AP reported a free dealer software update as the remedy: Associated Press report on recall 25S72.
On a candidate vehicle, switch the ignition on, select reverse with the brake applied and confirm that the image appears promptly. Shift to park or drive and confirm that the image clears rather than staying on screen. Repeat the test after the car has warmed up and, if possible, in daylight and low light. A camera that flickers, shows a blue or black screen, has severe delay or remains displayed should be documented and checked by a dealer. Confirm campaign status by VIN; do not assume that every 2020 or 2021 EcoSport is included. The reported 200,061 vehicles are the total across multiple Ford and Lincoln models, not the number of EcoSports.

Use the exact owner’s manual and equipment list
Operating checks are only meaningful when you know which equipment the vehicle was built with. Ford’s EcoSport manual portal is at Ford’s owner-manual site. Ford cautions that online text can differ from the printed manual and may describe equipment that is absent or operates differently on an individual vehicle.

Match the manual to the car’s model year, market and VIN or build specification before relying on a warning-light meaning, fuse location, drive-mode instruction or camera procedure. During the inspection, compare the physical controls with the manual: the presence of a button does not guarantee that the associated feature is fitted, and a missing control may simply indicate a different trim.
What to inspect on the actual car
Recalls identify defined safety defects; they are not a substitute for checking wear, neglect or damage on a used vehicle. Arrange an independent inspection before paying a deposit that cannot be recovered. Give the technician the VIN, the seller’s service records and any symptoms you observed.

Before starting the engine
- Check the VIN on the vehicle against the title, registration and seller’s paperwork.
- Look for water intrusion, corrosion, accident repairs, uneven panel gaps and damaged wiring in the engine bay, cabin and cargo area.
- Inspect fluid levels and condition, the battery date and terminal condition, tire age and wear pattern, brake components and visible suspension parts.
- Verify that dashboard warning lights illuminate during the bulb check and go out after the engine starts. A missing warning light or a warning that stays on needs diagnosis, not a reset.
- Operate seat adjustment, locks, windows, mirrors, climate controls, infotainment, lighting, wipers and safety-belt hardware. Record intermittent faults rather than accepting “it sometimes does that.”
During a cold start and road test
- Ask to start the car cold. Note cranking time, idle quality, smoke, unusual ticking, belt-area noise and warning messages.
- Drive over smooth and uneven roads at city and highway speeds. Watch for pulling, vibration, steering looseness, brake pulsation, clunks or noises that change with speed or turning.
- Test acceleration, gear changes, reverse engagement and hill starts without abusing the drivetrain. A hesitation, flare, harsh engagement or unexplained delay warrants a professional scan and mechanical inspection.
- Check the temperature gauge and climate system during a sufficiently long drive. An overheating indication or loss of heat is a reason to stop and investigate.
- Repeat the rearview-camera test on applicable 2020–2021 vehicles, including the transition out of reverse.
These checks identify symptoms to investigate; they do not establish that a particular fault is a common EcoSport defect. The technician should use scan data, a lift inspection and service records to determine the cause.

Ask for dated invoices, not only a stamped booklet. Useful records show oil and filter changes, brake and tire work, battery replacement, cooling-system service, software updates, timing-belt work where applicable, and recall completion. Compare mileage on each invoice with the odometer and title history. Gaps do not prove neglect, but they increase the value of a mechanical inspection and reduce confidence in claims that maintenance was completed.

Ask the seller specific questions: When was the last service? Which warning lights or drivability symptoms have appeared? Has the vehicle been in a flood, collision or auction? Was work performed by a dealer or an independent shop? Request permission to call the shop named on an invoice. A seller who will not provide the VIN, permit a cold start or allow an independent inspection should be treated as a higher-risk purchase regardless of model year.

How to compare two used EcoSports
Compare the cars on evidence you can verify, rather than assigning a reliability score that has not been established.

If one vehicle has a slightly higher price but complete records, no unexplained symptoms, verified campaign repairs and a clean inspection, it may present less risk than a cheaper car with missing history. Do not let a completed recall become the sole reason to choose either vehicle.
What is not established about EcoSport reliability
The available evidence does not support a defensible ranking of recurring non-recall failures by EcoSport model year or engine. It also does not provide a comparative reliability statistic, a failure rate, typical repair costs or a “years to avoid” list. Aggregated owner complaints can be useful leads, but they are not failure rates unless model year, engine, maintenance, exposure and the number of vehicles in service are properly accounted for.
Use complaints and online anecdotes, if you consult them, as prompts to ask questions about the car in front of you—not as proof that every EcoSport has the same defect. A confirmed recall, a documented repair and a technician’s finding should remain separate categories in your decision.
