The Colnago Steelnovo combines Columbus steel tubes with 3D-printed steel lugs that join them. It is not a frame printed entirely from metal. The $18,000 headline refers to the original 2024 launch edition’s reported price, not a confirmed current price: Colnago’s US site now shows separate Steelnovo listings at different prices.
Is the Colnago Steelnovo frame 3D printed?
No—not as a complete frame. Colnago describes the Steelnovo as “a steel bike, built from Columbus tubes and 3D-printed steel lugs.” The tubes form the main lengths of the frame; the printed lugs are the shaped joints that connect them. Colnago also highlights hidden welds and fully integrated cabling. Colnago’s Steelnovo page and BikeRadar’s 2024 launch report describe this tube-and-lug construction.
That distinction matters: “3D-printed bike” can suggest that the entire frame is made layer by layer. The documented construction is more specific—steel tubing joined by metal-additive-manufactured steel lugs. BikeRadar identifies Columbus as the tubing partner and Additiva as the specialist for the printed lugs.
What does the $18K price refer to?
BikeRadar reported a €17,500 price for the original Steelnovo launch edition in November 2024, giving an approximate conversion of $18,475 at the time. That was the price attached to the initial 70-bike edition; it should not be treated as the current US retail price or as a universal price for every Steelnovo build.

How is the Steelnovo made?
Colnago says the Steelnovo is designed and handmade in Italy. The company describes each frame as requiring “a full working day of artisanal craftsmanship” before assembly and shipment. That is Colnago’s account of its process, not an independently measured production figure. The original launch edition was limited to 70 bikes.
The combination of conventional steel tubes and printed joints lets the construction retain a steel-tube frame while using custom-shaped connections. Colnago presents the result as a modern steel road bike, with hidden welds and internally integrated cables rather than a wholly printed structure.

What was included on the original launch bike?
The 2024 launch model paired its steel frame with contemporary road-bike equipment. BikeRadar reported disc brakes, integrated cable routing, clearance for tyres up to 35 mm, and a custom Campagnolo Super Record Wireless build with Bora Ultra WTO wheels. Those specifications describe the original launch version; they should not be assumed for every current listing or later build.
How does it differ from Colnago’s carbon race bikes?
Colnago positions the Steelnovo around the ride character of steel. By contrast, the company says carbon race models such as the V5Rs prioritize low weight and aerodynamic performance. The Steelnovo still has modern features including integrated cabling and disc brakes, so the distinction is not simply old technology versus new.

Those are product-positioning differences, not proof that one material is faster or more comfortable in every situation. The available information does not provide a comparative test establishing that. A useful decision comes down to the material and ride character you want, your priorities around weight and aerodynamics, and the fit and build of the particular bike.

Colnago lists seven sizes, spanning 420–570. The numbers alone are not a reliable way to select a frame: compare the Steelnovo geometry with a bike that fits you and use Colnago’s size guide or a dealer’s professional fitting advice. - Edition: Identify whether the offer is the original 70-bike launch edition, the 70th Anniversary Edition, or another Steelnovo listing.
- Build: Confirm the included groupset, wheels, and other components rather than assuming the 2024 launch specification applies.
- Price and stock: Check the current local price and availability for that exact configuration with Colnago or an authorized dealer.
- Fit: Use the geometry and professional fitting guidance, not only the size label.
