ClearMotion raised $115 million in a Series D round led by Franklin Templeton, VentureBeat reported on January 9, 2019. The company’s “digital chassis” concept combines active suspension hardware, software controls and cloud-derived road information to anticipate and respond to vehicle movement. ClearMotion later announced an OEM production program with NIO, but that is a separate milestone from the 2019 funding round.
What ClearMotion announced in 2019
VentureBeat reported that ClearMotion’s $115 million Series D was led by Franklin Templeton. The article named Microsoft, Bridgestone, Qualcomm, World Innovation Lab, NewView Capital, Eileses Capital, and clients advised by J.P. Morgan Asset Management as participants. VentureBeat’s January 9, 2019 report
At the time, founder and CEO Shakeel Avadhany framed the goal as “proactive ride”—responding to road inputs rather than only reacting after the vehicle moves. He also pointed to earlier automaker efforts: “Starting in the 1980s, OEMs [original equipment manufacturers] tried a lot of solutions to try to do what ‘proactive ride’ does,”
What ClearMotion means by “digital chassis”
In ClearMotion’s description, the term refers to an integrated vehicle system, not a standalone comfort feature. The 2019 account described four electro-hydraulic ActiValves fitted at the shock absorbers, software coordinating their operation, and road data collected for cloud analysis. ClearMotion’s current explanation of how the system works describes ActiValves sensing disturbances and actuators countering vehicle movement, with software coordinating the system across all four corners.

Active suspension on the vehicle
The ActiValve-and-actuator system is intended to manage motion at the wheels and body as a vehicle encounters uneven pavement. ClearMotion presents this as a way to improve ride comfort, handling and safety; those are company-stated intended benefits, not independently established outcomes in the cited material.
Road information from the cloud
ClearMotion calls its cloud-based road-surface intelligence RoadMotion. The company says it can identify road features before a vehicle reaches them and states a location accuracy of better than 20 mm. That figure is a ClearMotion specification, not an independently verified measurement in the available reporting.

Together, the hardware and software form the on-car response, while RoadMotion is meant to supply advance information about the road ahead. This OEM-integrated approach is different from a demonstrated consumer aftermarket kit; the cited sources describe automaker integration rather than a retail retrofit product.

What the milestones do—and do not—establish
The announcements show a progression from fundraising and a technical concept to a named OEM program, a manufacturing facility and company-reported ET9 deliveries. They do not, by themselves, establish independent performance results, total factory output, or broad deployment across vehicle models. ClearMotion’s statements are useful for understanding its intended technology and reported progress; the cited reporting does not independently verify current deployment or quantify real-world ride improvements.
The central distinction is between the 2019 investment story and the later production story: the funding backed ClearMotion’s “digital chassis” ambitions, while the NIO and Changshu announcements describe subsequent steps toward OEM manufacturing.
