The feature most likely meant by “the surprising backup feature” is Chevrolet’s Heated Wiper Park: a heated strip at the bottom of the windshield where the wipers rest. Chevrolet says it helps minimize ice and snow buildup and makes the blades less likely to freeze. It is not a universal feature, and it does not replace clearing snow and ice before driving.
What a heated wiper park does
Chevrolet describes Heated Wiper Park as heating the lower edge of the windshield to help minimize ice and snow buildup. The purpose is to reduce the chance that wiper blades freeze where they rest. The manufacturer does not provide an independent effectiveness test or a figure showing how much ice the system can clear.
This is a targeted heated area, not a system that heats the whole windshield or melts accumulated snow. The phrase “backup feature” should not be taken to mean a backup camera or a substitute for driver visibility checks.
How Chevrolet says to activate it
Chevrolet documents two activation routes for vehicles equipped with this feature. Its instructions are specific to the applicable Chevrolet vehicle and settings; consult the owner’s manual for your exact model and year.

- Manual operation: Press the rear defrost button.
- Automatic shutoff: Chevrolet says it runs for 15 minutes on its first use during a drive and 10 minutes on each additional use during that drive.
These controls and durations are Chevrolet’s stated behavior for Heated Wiper Park, not a rule for other manufacturers or defrosters. See Chevrolet’s Heated Wiper Park support page.
How it differs from other defrosters

The Kia shutoff time is specific to the rear defroster covered in that manual; it should not be confused with Chevrolet’s Heated Wiper Park timing. What to do before driving in snow or ice
- Clear snow, ice, and dirt from all windows and lights, along with backup cameras and other sensors. NHTSA’s Winter Driving Tips 2017–2018 specifically advises clearing these areas before setting off.
- Check that the windshield and mirrors provide usable visibility and that the wipers are free to move. A heated wiper park can help at the resting area, but it is not a reason to drive with obstructed glass or snow still on the vehicle.
- Confirm the controls and winter features in your own vehicle’s manual. Names, availability, activation conditions, and shutoff behavior vary by model.
- Learn how your vehicle behaves on slippery surfaces and, where safe, practice away from main roads. NHTSA recommends getting familiar with the vehicle’s features and practicing in a safe area.
- Follow your manual’s winter-driving guidance. Honda’s 2024 CR-V Hybrid manual says Snow mode adjusts powertrain settings to maximize controllability, but does not make every snowy or frozen road safe; it advises winter tires or chains, slower speeds, and adequate following distance.
Honda’s Snow-mode caution applies to the 2024 CR-V Hybrid. It is a reminder that a vehicle mode or visibility aid cannot eliminate the hazards of winter roads.

Look in your owner’s manual or the manufacturer’s support page for terms such as “heated wiper park,” “wiper de-icer,” or a description of heating the windshield at the wipers’ resting position. Check the controls and any settings named in the manual rather than assuming the rear-defrost button works the same way on every car. Chevrolet’s documented feature is one example; the available sources do not establish that all makes use the same name or operating logic.
