Cold Starts: How Long Should You Let Your Car Idle To Warm Up Before Driving?

Most modern gasoline cars need about 30 seconds of idling before you drive gently. Learn what changes in severe cold, with older cars, hybrids, EVs and winter ice.

For most modern gasoline cars, let the engine run for about 30 seconds after a cold start, then drive away gently. That is usually enough time to fasten your seat belt, set the mirrors and confirm that the engine is running normally.

Do not treat 30 seconds as a visibility rule. If the windshield, windows, mirrors, lights or roof are covered with ice, frost, snow or heavy fog, wait—and clear them—before moving. The goal is a safe view, not a specific engine-temperature reading.

The short answer: about 30 seconds

Modern fuel-injected engines do not normally need to sit and idle for 5, 10 or 15 minutes. After starting, give the engine roughly half a minute, select the appropriate gear and pull away smoothly.

For the first several minutes, keep engine speed and load moderate. Avoid hard acceleration, high RPM, full-throttle operation and heavy towing until the engine and drivetrain have reached normal operating temperature. Light driving warms the engine, transmission and other components more effectively than leaving the car stationary.

Situation What to do
Modern gasoline car on a normal morning Idle for about 30 seconds, then drive gently.
Frost, ice, snow or fog Wait until all necessary glass, lights and roof areas are clear. Scrape or brush snow and ice off rather than relying only on the defroster.
Older carbureted vehicle Allow the engine to run as needed—often a minute or two—and follow its specific operating instructions.
Severe cold or difficult starting Follow the owner’s manual and investigate the battery, oil viscosity, antifreeze protection or other underlying problem.
Battery-electric vehicle Use preconditioning, preferably while plugged in, rather than warming a nonexistent combustion engine.

What to do after a cold start

  1. Start the vehicle. Do not start it until you are ready to leave, unless you need time to clear ice or snow safely.
  2. Wait approximately 30 seconds. Use this time to fasten your seat belt, adjust the mirrors and check the instrument panel for warning lights.
  3. Check visibility. Clear the windshield, side glass, mirrors, headlights, taillights, roof and any other area that affects your view or could shed snow onto another vehicle.
  4. Drive away smoothly. Keep acceleration gentle and avoid high engine speed while the oil and drivetrain fluids are cold.
  5. Increase the load gradually. Once the vehicle reaches normal operating temperature, normal acceleration and heavier use are appropriate.

The temperature gauge does not need to reach its normal position before you drive. It tells you that the engine has warmed up, not that the car must remain parked until then.

Why long warm-up idling is usually a bad idea

A cold engine running at idle warms slowly because it is producing relatively little heat. Driving gently puts a useful load on the engine and warms the transmission and other drivetrain components at the same time.

Leaving the car running for an extended period also:

  • burns fuel without moving the car;
  • creates unnecessary exhaust emissions;
  • extends the time the engine operates while cold; and
  • can contribute to additional wear compared with starting and driving gently.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says modern vehicles do not require winter warm-up idling. Its guidance also notes that, for most vehicles, idling longer than about 30 seconds can use more fuel than shutting the engine off and restarting it. A short restart after a brief stop is not generally harmful to a modern engine.

When a longer wait is justified

When you cannot see clearly

Safety takes priority over the stopwatch. Use an ice scraper or suitable de-icer, and run the defroster while you clear the vehicle. Do not drive with a small cleared patch in the windshield or with snow covering the roof, lamps or windows. Snow can slide forward under braking or blow onto vehicles behind you.

When the owner’s manual says otherwise

Some vehicles have specific warm-up instructions. The manual takes priority over a general 30-second rule, particularly for unusual engines, specialty vehicles or severe operating conditions.

Older carbureted cars

The traditional advice to warm a car for several minutes came largely from carbureted engines. A carburetor and choke may need extra time before the engine accepts throttle cleanly, especially in cold weather. An older vehicle may therefore need a minute or two—or a particular sequence involving the choke—before it can be driven normally.

Severe cold or a starting problem

Long idling is not a repair for a weak battery, incorrect oil, poor antifreeze protection or a fuel or ignition fault. In very cold climates, a properly installed block heater may help the engine start and reduce warm-up time. Use the oil grade and cold-weather procedure specified by the manufacturer.

Gasoline cars, hybrids and EVs

Gasoline cars

The typical procedure is approximately 30 seconds followed by gentle driving. Cold-start behavior can vary by engine and climate, so check the manual if the vehicle is unusually old, modified or used for demanding work.

Conventional hybrids

A hybrid may start and stop its gasoline engine automatically. Do not attempt to force the engine to run while parked just to warm it up. Put the vehicle in its ready-to-drive state and follow its normal operating instructions.

Plug-in hybrids

Plug-in hybrids can start their gasoline engines automatically for cabin heat, battery conditioning, emissions control or high power demand. Use the model-specific instructions rather than assuming that a long stationary warm-up is necessary.

Battery-electric vehicles

An EV has no combustion engine to warm up. In cold weather, use the vehicle’s preconditioning function, ideally while it remains connected to a charger. This can warm the cabin and, on supported models, the battery while using grid energy instead of taking as much energy from the battery during the trip.

Remote start does not change the rule

Remote start can be useful for defrosting and making the cabin comfortable, but it does not create a mechanical need for a 10-minute idle. If you use it, use the time needed to obtain clear visibility and comply with local idling rules. Never leave a running vehicle unattended where it could be stolen or moved unexpectedly.

Carbon monoxide warning

Never warm up a gasoline- or diesel-powered vehicle inside an attached garage—even with the garage door open. Carbon monoxide is colorless and odorless and can accumulate quickly. If a vehicle must run in a detached garage, the space must be fully open and well ventilated; the safest option is to run it outdoors.

Common cold-start myths

Claim What is generally true
“Every car needs 10–15 minutes of warm-up.” That is outdated advice for most modern fuel-injected vehicles.
“I must wait until the gauge moves.” No. Drive gently while the engine warms under light load.
“The engine needs several minutes of idling to circulate oil.” Oil begins circulating promptly after startup; a brief pause is normally sufficient.
“Remote start is better for the engine.” It may help clear glass or warm the cabin, but prolonged idling is not generally needed mechanically.
“Restarting a warm car damages it.” Modern vehicles are designed for normal restarting, and a short restart is usually preferable to unnecessary extended idling.

For manufacturer-specific requirements, consult the vehicle owner’s manual. AAA and EPA guidance support short warm-ups and gentle driving, while CDC guidance specifically warns against running vehicles in attached garages.

Is idling for 10 minutes bad for a car?

It is usually unnecessary and wastes fuel. Extended cold idling also produces avoidable emissions and keeps the engine operating under cold conditions longer than necessary. Light driving generally warms the vehicle more effectively.

Should I wait until the temperature gauge reaches normal?

No. The gauge does not need to reach its normal position before you leave. Start driving gently after a short pause; the engine and drivetrain will warm under light load.

Can I warm my car up in an attached garage if the door is open?

No. Never run a gasoline- or diesel-powered vehicle in an attached garage, even with the door open. Carbon monoxide can accumulate rapidly and is colorless and odorless. Move the vehicle outdoors before running the engine.

The Bottom Line

For a modern gasoline car, idle for roughly 30 seconds, clear every area needed for safe visibility, then drive gently. Do not wait 10 or 15 minutes for the temperature gauge to move. Longer warm-up periods are mainly for clearing ice or snow, following a vehicle-specific instruction, or accommodating an older or unusual vehicle. EV drivers should use preconditioning, and no combustion vehicle should be warmed up inside an attached garage.
