Choose the 1968–1970 Plymouth Road Runner if you want the most direct, low-trim expression of classic Mopar performance and are willing to accept a simpler cabin and period braking limitations. Choose a 1968–1970 Dodge Charger if its fastback styling, wider equipment range and R/T identity matter more than having the most stripped-down performance bargain. Neither model wins every comparison. A documented, structurally sound car with the correct drivetrain is usually a better purchase than a rusted or misrepresented example of your preferred nameplate.
The advice below is limited primarily to the second-generation Charger and early Road Runner muscle cars. Exact year, body style, trim, engine, originality, restoration quality and transaction price can change the decision completely.

Charger versus Road Runner at a glance
| Question | Road Runner answer | Charger answer |
|---|---|---|
| What was the original idea? | A value-focused performance version of Plymouth’s Belvedere and Satellite range, with minimal trim. | A more upscale B-body performance coupe with distinctive fastback styling and a broad model and trim range. |
| Best fit | Drivers who prioritize period performance character, simplicity and the Road Runner identity. | Owners who want dramatic styling, more available comfort equipment and multiple performance specifications. |
| Key 1968 performance reference | 335-bhp 383-cubic-inch V-8 in the launch specification. | R/T models included a 440 Magnum, with the 426 Street Hemi available; 1970 models added the 440 Six Pack as an option. |
| Main buying risk | Assuming every Road Runner is equally equipped or authentic when later modifications and trim changes are common. | Paying a premium for an engine claim or body shell without verifying VIN, fender tag, build sheet and drivetrain stampings. |
| Driving caveat | Period testers criticized drum-brake performance and traction off the line. | Condition, brake upgrades, suspension setup and drivetrain specification determine whether the car feels usable today. |
These are period propositions, not guarantees about an individual car. A base Road Runner with severe corrosion is not a better value than a carefully restored Charger, and an advertised Charger R/T is not automatically an authentic R/T.

The 1968–1970 cars are Chrysler B-body siblings, so they share broad engineering architecture and the visual presence associated with the muscle era. Their identities were deliberately different. The Charger presented itself as a dramatic, more highly styled fastback coupe with room for comfort and appearance options. The Road Runner was conceived as a bargain-basement performance model. Hagerty describes it as “a bargain-basement performance version of the Belvedere and Satellite lineups” in its 1968 Road Runner Vehicle Valuation Report, published December 9, 2025.

That distinction affects what you see and touch. A Road Runner’s basic interior, conspicuous badging and limited convenience equipment are part of its appeal, not evidence that a prior owner removed expensive options. A Charger can be specified and restored in several directions, from a relatively restrained road car to a highly optioned R/T. Comparing only engine badges misses the original product strategy.
Why the 1968 Road Runner is the clearest bargain-performance reference
Launch specification and production
Hagerty’s 1968 report identifies a 335-bhp, 383-cubic-inch V-8, a roughly 3,000-pound two-door hardtop and a $2,870 base price. The report counts 44,559 Road Runners for 1968: 29,240 coupes and 15,359 hardtops after the hardtop was added during the model year. Body style matters when comparing prices and authenticity because a coupe and hardtop are not interchangeable variants.
Period performance figures
The same report reproduces historical test results of 0–60 mph in 7.3 seconds, a 15.37-second quarter-mile at 91.4 mph and a 122-mph top speed. These are period figures reproduced in a 2025 valuation report, not a current independent test. Tire technology, fuel, tune, gearing, weather and the mechanical condition of a surviving car can produce very different results.
What the low price bought—and omitted
The Road Runner’s equipment strategy kept the entry price down, but it also made the car less luxurious than a similarly powerful Charger. Hagerty lists several original-period options in its report:
| Option | Original listed price | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic transmission | $299 | Period-dollar option price reported for the 1968 car. |
| Air conditioning | $355 | Not every surviving car has it; verify that the equipment is original to the car. |
| Road Runner stripes | $15 | Appearance equipment whose presence or absence can affect authenticity discussions. |
| 426 Street Hemi | $605 | A major performance and valuation differentiator; confirm the car’s documentation and components. |
The option figures are original 1968 prices, not restoration costs or present-day premiums. A car advertised as a Hemi Road Runner should be treated as a documentation project before it is treated as a bargain.

Brakes and traction
Drum brakes and launch traction are part of the Road Runner’s period compromises. Hagerty records that “Road testers enjoyed the performance, but were less charitable about the drum brakes and the lack of traction off the line.” On a current road, inspect the entire braking system, including drums, shoes, lines, wheel cylinders, master cylinder and adjustment, rather than assuming a famous model is ready for modern traffic.
What makes the 1968–1970 Charger different
R/T performance identity
The Charger guide from Fully Sorted states that 1968–1970 R/T models came with a 440 Magnum and could be ordered with the 426 Street Hemi. For 1970, the guide lists the 440 Six Pack among the options. Engine availability and equipment changed by model year, so do not apply a 1968 specification to a 1970 car or treat a later engine swap as factory equipment.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchPeriod horsepower numbers for these engines were generally gross ratings, measured under conditions unlike modern net-horsepower tests. When a seller quotes a figure, ask which engine, model year, rating system and test source the number represents. The engine’s identity and the car’s documentation are more useful than an isolated horsepower claim.
Body, trim and comfort range
The Charger’s fastback roofline and long, sculpted body are its primary emotional argument. The model also offered a broader spread of trims and convenience equipment than the stripped-down Road Runner concept. That makes it easier to build a Charger around touring, display or performance priorities, but it creates more opportunities for missing, substituted or incorrectly restored parts. A highly optioned interior, correct trim and factory performance package can materially change both the driving experience and the value.
Second-generation scope
This comparison concerns the 1968–1970 second-generation Charger rather than every Charger ever built. Earlier and later Chargers have different bodies, drivetrains, values and ownership issues. Likewise, Road Runner specifications changed through its production run. Confirm the model year and body style before using any specification or price in a buying decision.

| Year and body style | Is it a 1968, 1969 or 1970? Charger fastback, Road Runner coupe or hardtop? Any special edition? | Styling, equipment, production history and parts differ by year and body. |
| Trim and interior | Base model, R/T, SE or another package? Are seats, gauges, console and convenience features correct? | The original contrast was partly about trim and comfort, and missing components are costly to source. |
| Engine identity | Do the VIN, fender tag, build sheet and engine stampings support the claimed engine? | Rare-engine claims can dominate value and should never rest on a decal or color. |
| Transmission and axle | Which gearbox, rear axle and gearing are installed? Are they documented? | They influence drivability, highway rpm, launch behavior and authenticity. |
| Structure | What is the condition of floors, trunk, frame rails, quarters, hinges and prior repairs? | Hidden corrosion and poor repairs can exceed the cost difference between models. |
| Brakes and chassis | Are the brakes, steering, suspension, tires and cooling system maintained or merely cosmetically restored? | Period components may need rebuilding before regular road use. |
| Price and paperwork | What do recent comparable sales show for this exact configuration, and are invoices and restoration photographs available? | An asking price is not a transaction price, and provenance reduces uncertainty. |
Inspection priorities before you buy
Charger-specific checks
The Fully Sorted buyer’s guide highlights trunk-floor and floor-pan corrosion, bubbling around hood hinges and repairs to rear quarter panels. Inspect these areas from above and below, looking for fresh undercoating, uneven seams, drain holes that have been filled and paint that does not match adjacent panels. A magnet, paint-thickness readings and a lift inspection can reveal repairs that a polished exterior hides.
For an R/T, Hemi or Six Pack claim, compare the VIN, fender tag, build sheet and engine and transmission stampings. The documents should agree with one another and with the physical components. If a seller cannot provide access to the relevant numbers, price the car as an undocumented example until an independent marque specialist establishes otherwise.
Road Runner checks
The available Road Runner material confirms the car’s low-trim intent and period drum-brake criticism but does not establish an equally detailed, model-specific rust checklist. Do not automatically transfer every Charger inspection warning to a Road Runner. Apply the same structural standards—floors, trunk, rails, quarters, roof, doors and repaired collision areas—while using Road Runner-specific parts and documentation references for identity questions.
General inspection sequence
- Request records first. Ask for the VIN, fender tag, build sheet if available, title history, invoices, restoration photographs and details of any engine or transmission replacement.
- Inspect the shell on a lift. Check floors, trunk, frame rails, quarter panels, rocker structures, hinge areas and weld quality. Look for corrosion hidden by filler or undercoating.
- Verify the drivetrain. Photograph engine and transmission stampings, casting numbers and date codes. Compare them with the seller’s claim and the car’s documentation.
- Evaluate the braking system. Confirm pedal feel, hydraulic condition, drum or disc configuration, line routing and evidence of recent rebuilding. A road test should be performed only when the car is safe.
- Check suspension and steering. Inspect ball joints, bushings, tie-rod ends, shocks, steering box, wheel bearings and tire age.
- Assess electrical and cooling systems. Test charging, starting, lighting, gauges, heater and fan operation; inspect radiator condition, hoses and evidence of overheating.
- Obtain an independent report. Use a qualified classic-Mopar inspector who is not representing the seller, then revise your offer for documented defects and missing parts.
What the market figures do—and do not—tell you
There is no synchronized, like-for-like transaction study here that compares equivalent Chargers and Road Runners by date, condition, engine and documentation. Treat the following figures as context, not as a price guide for the car you are viewing.

These sources use different methods and reporting windows. The Charger benchmarks are secondary summaries of classic.com data, while Hagerty’s Road Runner figures aggregate a series of sales across several years and configurations. Do not conclude that one model is categorically the better investment. Compare documented, mechanically sound cars with the same body style, engine specification and condition standard.
How to set a sensible offer
- Start with sales of the same year, body style and engine configuration, not a generic “Charger” or “Road Runner” average.
- Discount undocumented rare-engine claims until a specialist verifies the numbers.
- Subtract the cost of structural repair, brake work, missing trim, interior replacement and drivetrain rebuilding.
- Separate a seller’s asking price from a completed transaction and account for inspection findings before negotiating.
- Reserve money for transport, storage, tires, fluids, seals and safety work even when the car presents well.
Which car suits your priorities?
Choose a Road Runner when simplicity is the point
The Road Runner is the better match if you want a recognizable, purposefully basic muscle car and prefer the story of a performance bargain over a luxury-oriented coupe. Its 1968 launch specification gives you a clear historical reference: 383 power, basic surroundings and a low original price. Expect to spend time making the braking, cooling, fuel and suspension systems dependable, and accept that an untouched cabin may feel sparse by modern standards.
Choose a Charger when design and range matter most
The Charger fits a buyer who values the fastback silhouette, wants a wider choice of trim and comfort equipment, or specifically seeks an R/T drivetrain. The 440 Magnum, optional 426 Street Hemi and 1970 440 Six Pack create distinct performance identities, but they also make documentation and parts correctness especially important. Buy the strongest body and most credible records you can afford rather than stretching for a badge.
Choose condition over preference when the gap is large
If one candidate has solid floors, straight quarter panels, coherent documents and a recently serviced chassis while the other has hidden corrosion and uncertain numbers, the sound car is usually the rational choice—even if it is the less glamorous model. Structural repairs and incomplete restorations consume budgets quickly, while cosmetic preferences can be changed over time.
Driving and ownership realities
Neither car should be treated like a modern sports coupe. Steering feel, braking distances, noise, heat management, visibility, ride quality and crash protection reflect late-1960s engineering. Before regular use, have a specialist inspect hydraulic brakes, fuel lines, tires, belts, hoses, wiring, wheel bearings and suspension joints. A car that starts and idles at a show may still be unsafe at highway speed.

Engine swaps, electronic ignition, cooling upgrades, radial tires, front-disc conversions and improved lighting can make a classic easier to use, but modifications affect originality and should be documented. Decide whether your goal is concours correctness, sympathetic restomod use, weekend cruising or occasional track work; the right equipment and acceptable changes differ for each.
Budget for secure storage, seasonal maintenance, parts research and specialist labor. Comparable insurance premiums and annual ownership costs are not established by the available market data, so obtain quotes for the exact vehicle, agreed value, usage pattern, storage location and driver profile rather than assuming one model is automatically cheaper to insure.
Special variants and research resources
Aero cars need separate treatment. Hagerty notes that the Plymouth Superbird closely resembled the 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona, but they are distinct cars. Do not use a Superbird or Daytona listing as a direct baseline for an ordinary Road Runner or Charger.

A practical decision checklist
- Buy the Road Runner if the car’s low-trim character, 1968-style bargain-performance history and straightforward presentation are your priorities.
- Buy the Charger if the fastback body, R/T equipment and broader comfort or engine choices are central to the experience you want.
- Walk away from either model when the seller will not permit a lift inspection, the numbers do not agree, corrosion is concealed or the price assumes an unverified rare specification.
- Use a specialist inspection before committing money, especially for Hemi, Six Pack, R/T or unusually high-priced examples.
The right choice is the documented, structurally honest car that delivers the kind of driving and ownership experience you actually want. Model reputation can start the search; condition, provenance and specification should finish it.
