Before you negotiate, verify the VIN and history, inspect the steel frame and birdcage on a lift, evaluate the engine cold and hot, and operate every interior and electrical function. Fiberglass can hide an expensive structural problem just as effectively as it can hide a previous body repair.
Use this checklist in two stages: perform a methodical walk-around yourself, then hire an independent shop familiar with Corvettes for a lift inspection before money changes hands. Judge originality and price against your intended use—collector car, dependable driver, or modified project—not against appearance alone.

1. Decide what you are buying before judging the car
A replacement engine, reproduction trim, repaired frame, or non-original color can be acceptable on a driver or modified project and unacceptable on an originality-focused collector car. Write down the outcome you want before viewing the Corvette; it determines which defects are deal-breakers and which are simply negotiation points.
Choose an intended use
- Original collector car: prioritize matching identification information, correct trim, documented history, factory-style finishes, complete equipment, and reversible repairs.
- Reliable driver: prioritize sound structure, predictable cooling and braking, safe steering and suspension, weather sealing, and a complete service history. Cosmetic imperfections may be tolerable.
- Modified project: assess the quality and engineering of the modifications, remaining rust, parts availability, and the total cost to make the car safe and usable. Do not pay collector-car money for a project merely because it has desirable options.
Request information before you travel
Ask the seller for clear photographs of the VIN, trim tag, title, odometer, engine compartment, underside, frame, wheel wells, floors, and any repaired area. Obtain service records and ask directly about collision damage, rust, water leaks, overheating, long storage, modifications, engine replacement, and frame repair. Vague answers are not proof of a defect, but they are a reason to inspect more carefully.

Verify identity and documentation
- Record the VIN from the car and compare every character with the title and registration.
- Compare trim-tag information, body color, interior color, equipment, and production details with the seller’s description.
- Check that the mileage is consistent with the records and wear on the pedals, steering wheel, seat bolsters, and controls. Treat an old odometer reading as a data point, not proof of total miles.
- Ask for invoices showing engine, transmission, brake, suspension, cooling-system, and frame work. Separate documented repairs from claims that cannot be substantiated.
2. Bring the right tools and use a repeatable process
Bring a bright flashlight, an illuminated automotive inspection mirror, a small magnet, tire-pressure gauge, paper towels, a notepad or phone for notes, and permission to photograph the vehicle. The mirror helps you see behind frame rails, suspension mounts, crossmembers, and hidden engine leaks without putting your hands in unsafe places. A magnet can reveal filler on steel components, but it will not identify every fiberglass repair and should never replace visual inspection.
Recommended inspection sequence
- Inspect the car cold, before the seller starts it. A warm engine can conceal difficult starting, smoke, or noisy valve-train behavior.
- Walk around the exterior at eye level, then kneel to view rocker areas, wheel wells, lower valances, and the underside.
- Open every compartment and photograph identification tags, wiring, fluid reservoirs, repairs, and casting or identification marks.
- Operate all doors, locks, hood, trunk, hatch, T-tops or convertible top, windows, lights, switches, and HVAC controls.
- Drive the Corvette long enough to reach normal operating temperature, test braking and steering safely, and attempt a hot restart.
- Park on clean, dry ground after the drive. Use paper towels to identify fresh fluid and note new drips.
- Arrange an independent Corvette-specialist lift inspection before signing a purchase agreement or releasing funds.
3. Inspect the fiberglass body for repair quality and water entry
Check stance, alignment, and panel gaps
View the Corvette from several car lengths away. It should sit level, without one corner noticeably low. Follow the gaps around the hood, doors, headlights, hatch or trunk, and removable roof panels. Uniform gaps are not proof of an untouched body, but a gap that changes width, a door that must be lifted to latch, or a hood that sits proud can indicate collision damage, shifted body mounts, or poor reassembly.
Look for evidence of paint and fiberglass repair
- Inspect glass, rubber seals, wheel wells, and jambs for paint overspray.
- Compare color and gloss from panel to panel in natural light. Mismatched shades can identify a replacement panel or a localized repair.
- Use reflected light to find waves, ripples, sanding marks, or excessive filler.
- Examine bonding strips, inner fender areas, and accessible fiberglass edges for cracks, separation, or crude patches.
- Look for stress cracks around door hinges, windshield and rear-glass openings, roof panels, hood corners, and other highly loaded areas. A crack may be cosmetic, but recurring cracks can signal movement or an underlying alignment problem.
Inspect hidden and low areas
Use the flashlight and mirror around wheel wells, floors, hatch or trunk recesses, front and rear valances, fenders, quarter panels, rocker structures, windshield surrounds, and areas concealed by trim. Water damage often starts where seals fail and carpeting or insulation remains damp. Check for musty odor, stained carpet, swollen backing, corroded fasteners, and missing drain paths.

Check glass, hardware, and exterior trim
Look for chips, cracks, delamination, and scratches in the windshield and side or rear glass. Open and close the doors, hood, hatch or trunk, and roof panels several times. Latches should engage positively without slamming. Confirm that locks work from both the key and the interior where applicable. Missing badges, moldings, emblems, and correct fasteners affect originality and can be surprisingly costly to replace, so record each omission rather than assuming it is minor.
4. Put the Corvette on a lift: rust and structure come first
Fiberglass does not rust, but the Corvette’s frame, crossmembers, brackets, body mounts, suspension pickups, and birdcage are steel. A clean-looking exterior can cover perforation or an unsafe previous repair. A lift inspection is the most valuable part of the evaluation.
Areas to inspect and what findings mean

Distinguish sound metal from a cosmetic cleanup
Tap questionable steel carefully with a blunt inspection tool approved by the shop, or ask the technician to do it. Solid metal gives a consistent response; heavy scale, soft spots, and holes require further examination. Fresh black coating, seam sealer, or thick paint on an otherwise rusty underside is not evidence of restoration quality. Ask what was removed, how the metal was repaired, and whether photographs exist before coating.

Inspect related underbody systems
With the car raised, check tie-rod ends, ball joints, control arms, shocks, axle or half-shaft boots, brake rotors and lines, exhaust, parking-brake hardware, and power-steering components. Note wet spots and the exact fluid color or odor. A small seep may be manageable; several contaminated systems, loose joints, and distorted mounting points indicate a broader mechanical project.
5. Evaluate the engine and mechanical operation
Confirm the engine’s identity and condition
Record the engine type and any casting or identification information that can be accessed without disassembly. Compare it with the specification expected for the VIN, trim, and your intended use. An engine replacement is not automatically bad, but its provenance, installation quality, cooling capacity, accessory compatibility, and effect on value should be documented.
Perform a cold static inspection
- Check engine oil level and appearance. Milky oil, fuel smell, metallic particles, or an overfull crankcase warrants diagnosis.
- Inspect the oil-pan gasket, front and rear main-seal areas, valve covers, timing-cover area, and rear of the engine for wetness.
- Examine coolant in the radiator or reservoir for the correct level, oil contamination, rust, or unexplained loss. Look at hoses, clamps, water-pump area, and heater lines.
- Inspect fuel lines, filters, carburetor or injection components, plug wires, belts, wiring, and the air filter for deterioration or unsafe routing.
- Check brake fluid and the master-cylinder area; on systems with a separate clutch hydraulic circuit, inspect its master and slave cylinders as well.
Start, idle, and observe
From cold, the engine should start without prolonged cranking or excessive throttle. Watch oil-pressure behavior, listen for valve chatter, knocks, rattles, belt noise, and exhaust-manifold leaks, and note whether the idle settles rather than hunting or stalling. Observe exhaust color after startup and during acceleration: persistent blue, white, or heavy black smoke requires a cause, not a guess. Check for excessive vibration that could originate in the engine, mounts, ignition, or driveline.

Drive to operating temperature
On a safe route, assess straight-line tracking, steering effort and return, brake pull and pedal feel, shift quality, clutch engagement where fitted, driveline vibration, and engine temperature. Watch the gauge during traffic and steady cruising. A car that behaves when cold but overheats or loses pressure when hot has not passed the test.
Test a hot restart and inspect afterward
After reaching normal temperature, switch the engine off for several minutes and restart it. Hard hot starting can point to fuel, ignition, vapor-lock, or electrical problems. Park on clean ground and inspect for fresh engine-oil, coolant, transmission, differential, brake, or power-steering leaks. Fresh fluid after a drive is more significant than an old stain that remains dry.
6. Check the interior, weather sealing, and every electrical function
Interior parts can be expensive, difficult to match, or evidence of long-term water entry. Remove mats where permitted and inspect carpet edges, floor areas, seat mounts, console, glove compartment, door panels, and trim for dampness, cracks, fading, missing hardware, and amateur wiring.

Use this function-by-function test

Do not assume an electrical fault is a simple fuse. Corroded grounds, brittle connectors, previous alarm installations, and improvised splices can consume more time than the failed component itself. Photograph non-factory wiring before anyone alters it.
7. Compare two Corvettes with a consistent scorecard
When several cars are available, score each on the same axes rather than allowing fresh paint or a dramatic color to dominate your judgment.

A shiny fiberglass body with a compromised frame should rank below a cosmetically imperfect Corvette with sound structure and records. Price the work that is proven, not the work the seller says would be easy.

8. Get an independent Corvette-specialist inspection
Your walkthrough identifies obvious problems; a specialist can put the car on a lift, measure or closely inspect structure, assess suspension and brakes, check fluid leaks, and distinguish normal age-related wear from unsafe or unusually expensive defects. Choose a shop that is independent of the seller and willing to provide photographs and a written report.
One published guide figure places a pre-purchase inspection at $250–$400 (Corvette.me, 2025). That is a reported range, not a universal quote: location, lift time, compression or leak-down testing, road testing, and report detail can change the price. Ask what the fee includes before scheduling.
Give the shop a focused brief
- State whether you are buying a collector, driver, or project.
- Request explicit findings on frame rails, crossmembers, mounts, birdcage interfaces, suspension pickups, and evidence of collision repair.
- Ask for cold-start, hot-running, hot-restart, charging, cooling, brake, steering, and leak observations.
- Have the technician list safety defects separately from deferred maintenance and cosmetic recommendations.
- Require photographs of every significant rust repair, patch, leak, or non-original modification.
Make your purchase decision only after reading the report and converting each defect into a realistic repair scope. If the seller will not permit a lift inspection, will not allow a cold start, or pressures you to pay before independent evaluation, treat that refusal as a reason to walk away.
