The car usually meant by “Chrysler’s forgotten sports car with Ferrari DNA” is the Chrysler TC by Maserati, a two-seat convertible built from 1988 through 1990. It did involve Maserati, but no documented Ferrari engineering, engine, or components are established for the TC. Its real story is more unusual: an Italian-assembled Chrysler platform, a Maserati-built turbocharged four-cylinder with a Cosworth cylinder head, and a production run of only 7,300 cars.
What the Chrysler TC by Maserati actually was
The Chrysler TC by Maserati was a jointly developed image car rather than a Ferrari-powered exotic. Chrysler wanted a prestigious sports convertible to improve its luxury credentials, while Maserati supplied Italian design, assembly work and specialist engine involvement. Underneath, however, the TC used a shortened version of the front-wheel-drive Q-platform related to the Dodge Daytona.

That combination explains both the car’s appeal and its confused reputation. The body, badge and Italian connection suggested an exclusive grand tourer. The mechanical architecture remained closely related to Chrysler’s mass-market Turbo II program. Calling the car “Ferrari DNA” makes a dramatic headline, but it does not describe the documented engineering lineage.

Was it really made by Maserati?
Yes, but “made by Maserati” needs to be read precisely. Chrysler and Maserati signed a memorandum of understanding in 1984 for an image-building luxury sports coupe. Maserati participated in development and assembled significant Italian content, while Chrysler supplied the underlying platform and much of the engine architecture. The production car was sold under the combined name Chrysler TC by Maserati, not as a standalone Maserati model.

The project became public at the 1986 Los Angeles auto show, according to MotorTrend’s 2020 historical account. Development delays pushed the car into production from 1988 to 1990. Maserati’s involvement was therefore genuine, but it did not turn every component into an Italian design. The shortened Chrysler platform, front-drive layout and Turbo II-derived engine block remained central to the car’s identity.
Where the Ferrari claim comes from—and where it stops
The available vehicle history does not establish Ferrari design work, Ferrari engines, Ferrari parts or a Ferrari engineering partnership for the TC. Maserati and Ferrari are separate marques with different corporate histories, and a Maserati collaboration cannot be treated as Ferrari provenance by association.
For this particular Chrysler, “Ferrari DNA” is best understood as a rhetorical description of the car’s Italian-badge mystique, not a technical specification. A buyer or historian should ask for a documented component or design link before repeating a Ferrari claim. No such link is established for the TC in the cited histories.

How Chrysler and Maserati developed the project
1984: the agreement
The 1984 memorandum of understanding set the project’s purpose: build a prestige sports coupe that could raise Chrysler’s image. It was an image exercise as much as a product program. Chrysler had mainstream reach and a usable front-drive architecture; Maserati offered Italian styling credibility and specialist manufacturing skills.
1986: public debut
The prototype reached the public at the 1986 Los Angeles auto show. Showing the car early helped create expectations for an Italian-American luxury convertible, but the production schedule slipped. By the time customer cars arrived, the market and Chrysler’s own product line had moved on.
1988–1990: limited production
Series production ran from 1988 through 1990, ending after 7,300 cars. The limited run was not the result of a long-running exotic-car program; it reflected a delayed, expensive image project that occupied an awkward place in Chrysler’s range.

Shortened Q-platform and front-wheel drive
The TC used a shortened Dodge Daytona-related Q-platform. Its front wheels provided propulsion, a layout that shared more DNA with Chrysler’s contemporary cars than with the rear-drive grand tourers many buyers associated with an Italian luxury badge. This architecture offered familiar Chrysler engineering and packaging, but it also made the Maserati name feel less transformative.

Maserati-assembled 2.2-liter turbo four-cylinder
The best-known engine was a special turbocharged 2.2-liter, 16-valve four-cylinder assembled by Maserati. Its cylinder head was cast by Cosworth, while suppliers including Mahle, Crane Cams and IHI contributed other parts. Much of the block and basic architecture traced back to Chrysler’s Turbo II program.
This is a genuine collaborative powertrain, not a Ferrari motor. The engine’s provenance is layered: Chrysler supplied the foundation, specialist suppliers provided important components, and Maserati assembled the finished unit. That complexity is one reason the TC attracts historians and complicates restoration.
Later Mitsubishi-sourced 3.0-liter V6
A later version replaced the special four-cylinder with a Mitsubishi-sourced 3.0-liter V6. That change made the lineup even less straightforward for owners trying to identify parts, service information or factory configuration. Any prospective buyer should verify the engine installed in the individual car rather than assuming every TC has the Maserati-assembled turbo four.

How it compares with the LeBaron and Daytona
The TC makes the most sense when viewed beside two Chrysler products that framed its market position: the LeBaron and the Dodge Daytona. The comparison is less about a single performance number than about provenance, equipment and expectations.

The contrast is clear: the LeBaron had already given Chrysler a recognizable convertible presence, while the TC tried to add exclusivity through Italian participation. The Daytona connection made the TC mechanically familiar to Chrysler engineers, but that familiarity weakened the impression of an all-new Maserati grand tourer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the Chrysler TC was forgotten
It arrived late
Production delays mattered. The car was announced and shown before it was ready for customers, allowing expectations to build while Chrysler’s product range continued to change. When the TC finally appeared, it was not defining the company’s convertible strategy; the LeBaron had already established that role.
The badge promised more than the platform delivered
Many buyers interpreted Maserati branding as a promise of a distinctly Italian driving experience. The TC’s front-drive, Dodge Daytona-related underpinnings told a different story. A sophisticated engine and Italian assembly could not erase the fact that the car was derived from Chrysler architecture. Critics therefore saw an expensive Chrysler derivative where buyers expected a fully Italian grand tourer.
Low volume created long-term obscurity
Only 7,300 cars were built. That is enough to create rarity, but not enough to support the broad owner network, parts ecosystem and specialist knowledge enjoyed by higher-volume classics. The mixed parts story adds another hurdle: some components relate to Chrysler systems, while others are specific to the Maserati collaboration or the individual engine version.

Is the TC collectible today?
It has a credible collectible case, but rarity alone does not guarantee high value. Collectible Automobile indexed the 1989–90 TC by Maserati among future collectibles, recognizing its unusual partnership and limited production. Its appeal is strongest for buyers interested in automotive design history, Chrysler’s 1980s strategy or obscure Italian-American collaborations.
Condition, documentation and configuration are likely to matter more than the badge alone. A car with clear ownership records, an identifiable engine, intact Italian-specific trim and evidence of careful maintenance is easier to evaluate than one described only as a “Maserati Chrysler.” Because the model used more than one powertrain, originality claims should be checked against the car’s build information and service records.
Buyer’s inspection checklist
- Confirm identity: Record the VIN, model year and title history before relying on a seller’s engine or production description.
- Identify the powertrain: Determine whether the car has the Maserati-assembled 2.2-liter turbo four-cylinder or the later Mitsubishi-sourced 3.0-liter V6.
- Separate shared from unique parts: Ask which components are Chrysler-derived and which were supplied specifically for the TC or its Italian assembly.
- Inspect body and trim carefully: Italian bodywork and model-specific exterior or interior pieces may be harder to replace than common Chrysler mechanical items.
- Demand documentation: Service invoices, factory literature and prior restoration photographs can be more useful than an unsupported claim of originality.
- Budget for research: Before buying, verify that the required manual, diagrams and replacement parts can be located for the exact engine and chassis configuration.
Can you still get parts and a repair manual?
Some mechanical knowledge may overlap with Chrysler’s contemporary front-drive and Turbo II systems, but the TC should not be treated as an ordinary Daytona or LeBaron. Maserati assembly, the Cosworth cylinder head, supplier-specific engine parts and the later V6 create several documentation paths.

Start with the car’s exact configuration, then match information in this order:
- Establish the engine and model year. Do not order components from a generic TC listing until the powertrain is confirmed.
- Use factory-level Chrysler documentation where the component is shared. Platform-related service procedures may be more accessible than model-specific body or trim information.
- Look for TC-specific literature for Italian-built systems. Verify edition, market and coverage before paying for a manual advertised simply as a “Chrysler TC” guide.
- Cross-check supplier numbers. Parts associated with Cosworth, Mahle, Crane Cams or IHI should be matched by specification, not by brand name alone.
- Document every substitution. On a low-volume car, a future owner needs to know whether a replacement is original, interchangeable or a custom adaptation.
Live availability of a particular service manual or replacement part changes over time, so sellers’ descriptions should be verified against the car and the publication’s stated coverage. A manual that covers a Chrysler turbo engine generally may not explain TC-specific body, trim or Maserati assembly details.
The fair verdict on Chrysler’s “Ferrari” sports car
The Chrysler TC by Maserati was not a hidden Ferrari project. It was a delayed, low-volume collaboration that combined Chrysler’s front-drive Q-platform and Turbo II heritage with Maserati assembly, Italian bodywork and a specially assembled turbocharged engine. Its 7,300-unit run, unusual supplier mix and awkward position between mainstream Chrysler and exotic Italian car make it historically significant even without Ferrari involvement.
For collectors, the honest description is the strongest one: a rare Chrysler-Maserati convertible with real Italian manufacturing content and distinctly American mechanical roots. That is enough to make the TC memorable—and enough to explain why it disappeared from ordinary sports-car conversation.
