The Chrysler 300M was sold for model years 1999–2004 as a front-wheel-drive luxury sedan with a sportier, import-fighting brief. Its styling and packaging were meant to appeal beyond traditional American full-size sedans, but its core hardware—a V6, four-speed automatic and front-wheel drive—made it a different kind of car from rear-wheel-drive European sport sedans. The 300M’s story is best understood as an ambitious positioning choice, not proof that it matched those rivals in refinement or driving character.
What was the Chrysler 300M?
Chrysler sold the 300M as a four-door sedan for the 1999 through 2004 model years. It used the second-generation LH platform, the cab-forward architecture also found beneath the Chrysler Concorde, Dodge Intrepid and Chrysler LHS. The car combined a distinctive, long-cabin shape with a shorter overall body than those related sedans.
The 300M’s significance lies partly in its unusual path to the showroom: it was planned as the next Eagle Vision, but Chrysler ended the Eagle brand and sold the car under its own name instead. That change gave Chrysler a sport-oriented sedan to sit alongside its larger, more traditionally styled offerings.
Was the Chrysler 300M based on the Eagle Vision?
Yes. The 300M originated as the planned second-generation replacement for the Eagle Vision. When Chrysler discontinued Eagle, it moved the car into the Chrysler range and revived the 300 name for it. The result was not a rebadged first-generation Vision but a new LH-generation model with a related platform and a distinct role in Chrysler’s lineup. The 300M Enthusiasts Club’s model history and LH platform history describe that lineage.

Why was the 300M shorter than other LH sedans?
The 300M retained the LH family’s 113-inch wheelbase but measured 197.8 inches overall. Its shorter length came from reduced front and rear overhangs rather than a shorter wheelbase. That proportion helped distinguish it visually and was part of making the car more suitable for European markets, where a more compact overall footprint mattered.
Cab-forward packaging gave the 300M a relatively long passenger compartment for its exterior length. The dimensions and platform relationships are reported by the 300M Enthusiasts Club; Consumer Guide’s used-car overview discusses its shorter-overhang design.

What engine is in a Chrysler 300M?
North American 300Ms used a 3.5-liter V6 driving the front wheels through a four-speed automatic transmission. The transmission included AutoStick, which let the driver select gears manually. This gave the sedan a more involved control option than a conventional automatic alone, but it did not change the car’s front-wheel-drive layout.
Specifications and equipment varied by model year and trim, so the broad 1999–2004 description should not be mistaken for one unchanging specification. For example, the 300M Special arrived for 2002 as a more performance-oriented version, with a modest power increase and features such as dual exhaust and 18-inch wheels described in model histories. Check the particular year and trim when comparing equipment or shopping for parts. J.D. Power’s model history and Cars.com’s year-by-year specifications cover changes across the run.

Was the Chrysler 300M meant to compete with the BMW 5 Series?
In intent and market positioning, yes: the 300M was presented as a sport-oriented American luxury sedan with an import-fighter role, and its development was associated with BMW 5 Series benchmarking. That is not the same as establishing equivalent performance or refinement. The 300M’s front-wheel-drive layout, V6 and automatic transmission differed from the rear-wheel-drive character associated with European sport sedans, and price, equipment and body packaging complicate any direct comparison.
Consumer Guide described the 300M as sport-oriented and more upscale than the Concorde, pointing to its larger standard engine, cabin appointments and manual-shift capability. The same publication said its overall refinement fell short of the Lexus GS 300 and Acura TL. That is one publication’s assessment, not a universal verdict on every aspect of the car. Consumer Guide’s overview provides that context.

| Comparison point | Chrysler 300M | Why the comparison needs care |
|---|---|---|
| Drive layout | Front-wheel drive | Unlike the rear-wheel-drive layout typical of the European sport-sedan comparison implied by the BMW 5 Series reference. |
| Engine and transmission | 3.5-liter V6 and four-speed automatic with AutoStick | Different mechanical approach from rivals; the trim and model year affect details. |
| Body and packaging | 197.8 inches long, with a 113-inch wheelbase | Shorter overhangs and a long cabin gave it a different footprint and interior packaging from larger related LH sedans. |
| Positioning and equipment | Sport-oriented, more upscale than the Concorde in Consumer Guide’s assessment | Equipment, pricing and market positioning are not a direct measure of equal driving refinement. |
| Period verdict | Consumer Guide said refinement fell short of the Lexus GS 300 and Acura TL | This is that publication’s assessment; it does not establish a universal ranking or a BMW head-to-head victory. |
What do the crash-test records say about the 300M?
The IIHS records cited here are tests of the related Chrysler LHS, not direct crash tests of a 300M. The distinction matters: IIHS’s record for the 1999 test identifies a 1999 LHS and assigns its Poor rating to 1999–2000 models. A later record identifies a 2001 LHS, rates it Acceptable overall and applies that result to 2001–2004 models. IIHS also notes changes to airbag deployment beginning with 2001 models. These are related-model results with stated applicability, not proof that a 300M itself was tested.
For the exact scope and vehicle identification, see the IIHS 1999 record and IIHS 2004 record.

Which years was the Chrysler 300M made?
The Chrysler 300M was produced for the 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004 model years. Model-year changes mean that a feature listed for one 300M should not automatically be assumed to apply to every car in the run.
Where can you find a Chrysler 300M owner’s manual?
A 2004 Chrysler 300M owner’s manual is available as a model-year-specific reference. If your car is a different year, match the manual to that model year rather than assuming the 2004 instructions apply unchanged. The cited manual is for the 2004 car: 2004 300M Owner’s Manual.
