Christian Horner and Max Verstappen were met with jeers at F1 75 Live, Formula 1’s joint 2025 season launch at London’s O2 Arena. The reported “brutal reception” meant loud booing—not a physical confrontation. Horner said he was most disappointed by the crowd’s response to Verstappen, then a four-time world champion.
What happened at the F1 75 launch?
F1 75 Live brought all ten teams together at the O2 Arena in February 2025 to present their liveries for the new season. When Red Bull team principal Christian Horner and Verstappen were introduced, they were met with jeers. The Guardian described the crowd as 16,000-strong; that is the newspaper’s reported figure, not an independently verified attendance count.
Coverage also described a mixed response to Verstappen when he appeared on the arena screens. Reports characterize the incident as booing and jeering, not violence. They do not establish what proportion of the audience booed or why individual spectators reacted as they did.
What did Horner say about the crowd’s reaction?
Horner acknowledged that fans support the teams and drivers they choose. The Guardian reported his comparison: “Launching your car is a bit like launching your away strip in a home fans stadium.” He added that Red Bull had been “the protagonists over the years.”

Horner said his main disappointment was the reception to Verstappen. “The only disappointment I had with it was the reception to Max as a four-time world champion, that was disappointing,” he said, according to The Guardian. Sky Sports also reported that Horner said Red Bull had not discussed the reception with the FIA.
He connected crowd reactions to the setting, noting that responses can differ depending on where a race or event takes place. Horner also said fans are “the DNA of the sport” and that Formula 1 had welcomed more diverse fans in recent years, as reported by The Guardian.

Why did people disagree about the booing?
The responses reflected different views of sporting crowds, rather than a measured account of audience sentiment. The FIA spokesperson, quoted by Motorsport.com, called the reaction “tribalist” and emphasized respect, saying both Horner and Verstappen had contributed to the sport. Contemporary coverage reported that the FIA itself was booed when mentioned.
McLaren team principal Zak Brown, quoted by The Guardian, defended fans’ right to cheer and boo. He said he had heard nothing beyond those ordinary sporting reactions and saw nothing “visceral or violent,” contrasting the event with sports incidents involving riots.

Coverage described the launch atmosphere as lively; Autosport characterized the broader event as an otherwise feel-good celebration. Those descriptions concern the event’s overall atmosphere and do not mean every attendee shared the same view of the booing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Was Horner’s later Red Bull departure connected to the incident?
No connection is established by the available reporting. On 9 July 2025, Formula 1 reported that Red Bull released Horner from his operational duties with immediate effect and appointed Laurent Mekies as CEO of Red Bull Racing. That later career development should be kept separate from the February launch reaction: the announcement does not establish that the crowd’s response played a role.
