There is no single winner—and the vehicles are not all the same kind of electric truck. BYD’s SHARK is a plug-in hybrid pickup, while the U.S. models with comparable published range figures are battery-electric. For U.S. buyers, availability is another decisive factor: Ford says the F-150 Lightning is no longer available to order in its current form. The available evidence does not establish that a new BYD SHARK can be bought and supported through an authorized U.S. sales network.
What is actually being compared?
The clearest Chinese example in this matchup is BYD’s SHARK, also marketed in some contexts as the SHARK 6. BYD describes it as a plug-in hybrid pickup: it combines an electric hybrid system with a 1.5T engine and can drive on electricity or use fuel-assisted operation. That is different from a battery-electric vehicle (BEV), which relies on a battery and electric motors rather than an onboard combustion engine.
The U.S. reference group consists of BEV pickups, including the Ford F-150 Lightning, Rivian R1T, Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Sierra EV, GMC Hummer EV, and Tesla Cybertruck. They are useful comparisons for electric pickup capability, but not like-for-like powertrain comparisons with the SHARK. The available material establishes figures for one Chinese model, not a broad lineup of Chinese pickups.
How do their published range and performance figures compare?
BYD’s launch announcement reports more than 430 hp, 0–100 km/h in 5.7 seconds, 100 km of pure-electric range, and 840 km of combined range on the NEDC cycle. These are manufacturer claims, not independent comparative test results. BYD also describes vehicle-to-load functionality, which allows the vehicle to supply power to external equipment.

A BYD SHARK 6 specification sheet dated April 3, 2025 lists a 1.5T hybrid engine, a rear motor with maximum power of 150 kW, and 85 km of electric range under WLTP with the stated condition “SOC 25%-100%.” The 85 km WLTP figure and the 100 km in BYD’s launch announcement are tied to different source materials and range methods; they should not be averaged or treated as a single directly comparable result.
For American BEV pickups, a Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) report reproduces EPA combined city/highway estimates for selected 2025 configurations. Its figures span 240 to 492 miles. EPA estimates are based on controlled laboratory testing, so they are not guarantees of the distance a truck will cover in every driving situation.

These values do not produce a valid one-number ranking of the SHARK against the BEVs. The BYD figures use NEDC and WLTP methods and report either electric-only or combined hybrid range; the U.S. figures are EPA estimates for specific 2025 BEV configurations. A fair comparison needs the same market, model year, range method, and kind of range.
What happens to range when a pickup tows?
EPA range is not towing range. The VDOT report explains that controlled laboratory estimates cannot fully represent real-world use and summarizes field-test examples in which heavy trailers sharply reduced distance. In a cited test with a trailer weighing about 10,000 pounds, the F-150 Lightning traveled about 91 miles and the Rivian R1T about 85 miles. Those results describe the specific test conditions and reporting cited by VDOT; they should not be generalized to every truck, trailer, route, or temperature.

Charging logistics matter as much as the range loss. VDOT notes that many charging stations use ordinary parking spaces rather than pull-through bays, which can make charging with a trailer inconvenient. The available comparison does not establish a matching set of towing ratings, payload figures, loaded-range tests, charging performance, or route conditions for the SHARK and the U.S. BEVs. Buyers considering truck work should verify those specifications for the exact trim and plan around the vehicle’s likely loaded range and charging access.

Ford’s current F-150 Lightning page says the truck is no longer available to order in its current form. Ford says it is moving toward an extended-range electric vehicle configuration as part of its Universal Electric Vehicle platform, but gives no specific availability date. Ford also says existing owners retain support, EV service, software updates, and replacement parts. This status is material to a buyer comparing new trucks, even though the 2025 EPA figures remain useful as a dated, configuration-specific reference.

BYD’s launch announcement says the SHARK launched in Mexico. The available evidence does not establish U.S. new-vehicle sales eligibility, an authorized U.S. dealer or service network, or warranty and parts support for an imported SHARK. That is not proof that importation is categorically prohibited; it means U.S. purchase and support should not be assumed. Anyone considering an import would need to establish applicable compliance, registration, warranty, parts, and service details independently before committing.
Who comes out on top for different buyers?
For a U.S. buyer who wants a new BEV pickup
The American BEVs in the VDOT comparison have the more directly relevant published range data for U.S. shoppers, but the figures apply to particular 2025 trims and do not establish current orderability for every model. Ford’s current order status rules out treating the F-150 Lightning as an available new purchase in its present form. Check current availability and the exact trim’s specifications before choosing among the remaining candidates.

The SHARK’s plug-in hybrid layout is the key distinction: BYD reports both electric-only and combined range, and describes a 1.5T engine alongside its electric hybrid system. Its NEDC and WLTP figures are manufacturer-published measurements, not directly comparable to the EPA BEV estimates in the table. This may make the SHARK interesting to a buyer seeking a different powertrain, but the available figures alone do not prove it is the better work truck or the better purchase in a particular country.
For towing, payload, or long-distance work
Do not choose from headline range or horsepower alone. Compare the exact truck and trim’s rated towing and payload, then account for the trailer, load, route, weather, charging or refueling access, service coverage, and parts availability. The evidence here does not provide a complete same-condition comparison across those factors, so it cannot establish an overall work-truck winner.
