The Chinese Tesla competitor in the headline is the BYD Yangwang U9 Xtreme, an electric hypercar from BYD’s luxury Yangwang brand. BYD says it reached 496.22 km/h (about 308.35 mph) at ATP Automotive Testing Papenburg in Germany on September 14, 2025, and calls the result a production-car top-speed record. The figure and the car’s production status are BYD claims; the cited announcements do not establish independent ratification of the record.
What car set the claimed record?
It was the Yangwang U9 Xtreme, also called the U9X. Yangwang is BYD’s luxury sub-brand. BYD says the Xtreme was formerly known as the U9 Track or Special Edition and builds on the architecture of the U9 sold in China, with key evolutions. BYD’s announcement identifies the car and its record claim.
How fast was it, and where did it run?
BYD reports a top speed of 496.22 km/h, equivalent to about 308.35 mph, achieved on September 14, 2025, at ATP Automotive Testing Papenburg in Germany. That is the precise figure in the company’s announcement; “obliterates” is headline-style emphasis, not a separate measurement or validation.
The result should be described as BYD’s reported speed rather than an independently confirmed world record. The official material cited here does not show that a separate record-keeping body ratified it, nor does it establish a two-way average or provide enough detail to compare the result on identical terms with every other high-speed-car claim.

Why does BYD call the U9 Xtreme a production car?
BYD says the U9 Xtreme is being made available to customers in a limited production run of no more than 30 cars. That makes the company’s production-car framing more specific than a claim about a broadly available model, but it does not by itself settle how the car should be classified against other records. The announcement does not state a price. BYD’s release is the source for the stated customer availability.
What engineering does BYD cite?
BYD attributes the U9 Xtreme’s performance to a 1,200-volt electrical architecture, a lithium iron phosphate Blade Battery with a stated 30C discharge rate, and four motors rated to 30,000 rpm. The company says their combined output exceeds 3,000 PS. It also lists track-level semi-slick tyres and revised DiSus-X suspension. These are manufacturer-provided specifications, not independently assessed performance findings.

How does the Nürburgring result relate?
BYD separately reports that the U9 Xtreme completed the 20.832 km Nürburgring Nordschleife in 6:59.157 on August 22, 2025, in the Electric Super Sports Cars class. That is a circuit lap result, not the Papenburg top-speed run, and it should not be conflated with the 496.22 km/h claim. Details appear in BYD’s Nordschleife announcement.

Top-speed claims are easiest to compare when the underlying conditions match. Relevant distinctions include whether the figure is a one-way peak or a two-way average, whether the vehicle was a customer-production car or a prototype, what configuration and speed limiter were used, and how the venue measured and verified the run. BYD’s cited material gives its reported speed, test venue and date, and limited-run customer-production claim, but does not establish independent ratification or every detail needed for a like-for-like comparison.

BYD Executive Vice President Stella Li described the result as “an incredibly proud moment for everyone in the product development division.” That is company commentary included in BYD’s announcement, not an independent assessment of the record.
