Choccydan’s 2024 video about Pier Street Carpark in Perth described a female parking bay as “at least 20 per cent wider” and called the feature sexist. But the City of Perth’s account, reported by PerthNow, was that the bay shown was one of the wider bays found on every level of the car park—not a wider bay because it was in the female parking area. The City said the other 27 bays in that zone were standard size.
What Choccydan’s video claimed—and what the City said
PerthNow reported on 3 September 2024 that Choccydan posted the video the previous month at Pier Street Carpark. The outlet said the TikTok creator claimed the female bay was “at least 20 per cent wider.” That percentage was the creator’s claim, not an independently verified measurement. PerthNow also described the video as attracting almost 4,000 comments; that figure is the outlet’s reported engagement, not an independent audit. PerthNow’s report attributed the correction to a City of Perth spokesperson.
The spokesperson said the particular bay shown was one of the wider bays present on every level, inside or outside the female-friendly area. The other 27 female bays, the City said, were the same size as standard bays. In other words, the apparent comparison in the video did not establish that the female parking area as a whole had wider spaces.
EWN also reported on the video on 23 August 2024, describing Choccy Dan lying down to compare spaces and making the 20 per cent claim. That is a second contemporaneous account of the video, not a separate measurement of the bays. EWN’s coverage identifies the location as Pier Street Carpark.

Why Pier Street had female parking bays
The City said it introduced the bays at Pier Street in 2016 after antisocial behaviour in and around the area affected customers’ experience and safety. A City spokesperson quoted by PerthNow said patrons gave positive feedback during the trial and reported feeling safer and more secure; the City continued the bays after the trial. The spokesperson also said the trial was not expanded to other City of Perth Parking car parks.
That is the City’s stated rationale and account of customer feedback, not proof of a measured reduction in crime or a quantified safety benefit. The sources available for this story do not establish an independently evaluated safety outcome.

What else the City said in 2024
In its response reported on 3 September 2024, the City said Pier Street Carpark was staffed seven days a week by a City of Perth Parking Officer, had 24/7 CCTV, and located the female-only bays near the car park office. The spokesperson also said no complaints about the “Pink Parking” bays had been received in the preceding 18 months. These are statements made in 2024; they should not be treated as confirmation of current staffing, CCTV coverage, bay locations, or complaint history.
Do the bays make the car park safer?
The reported explanation is that the bays were introduced in response to safety concerns and that patrons who gave feedback during the trial said they felt safer. That does not answer whether the arrangement reduced assaults, theft, or other incidents: no named study or published statistic measuring its effectiveness is established in the available reporting. The video debate included commenters suggesting the bays might help parents get children out of cars or place drivers closer to an entrance, but those comments are speculation, not the City’s stated explanation or evidence about outcomes.

Parking at Pier Street: check current signs
The 2024 reports do not confirm whether Pier Street’s female-bay arrangement or the operational details described then remain unchanged. For current parking information, the City of Perth parking page links to an interactive parking map and advises drivers that restrictions may change and to check the signs. The City’s parking infringements, payments and appeals guidance also advises motorists to read signs, stay within permitted markings, and make sure any required parking session is valid.
