Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Choose an exhaust listed for your motorcycle’s exact make, model, model year, engine configuration, and market—and confirm the exact system’s noise and emissions approval before buying. A slip-on is a smaller replacement; a full system replaces more of the exhaust and usually involves more installation work. Neither type guarantees a horsepower gain: judge performance claims by whether they come from the manufacturer or from independent testing on your specific motorcycle.
Start with exact fitment
Motorcycle exhausts are not universal parts. Match the exhaust maker’s listing to your bike’s make, model, model year, engine configuration, and sales market. Also check whether the listing distinguishes emissions versions or other model-specific variations. Kawasaki’s catalog, for example, lists exhaust products by motorcycle application and may specify year or emissions-version details: Kawasaki exhaust listings.
- Confirm the full motorcycle application, not just the brand or engine size.
- Check whether the system is a slip-on or full system and whether the listing names any required additional parts.
- Verify the exact part number and included items. A heat shield may be included with one product and sold separately with another.
If the seller cannot confirm that the part fits your exact motorcycle and market, do not assume that a similar model year or visually similar exhaust is compatible.
Choose between a slip-on and a full system
The main difference is how much of the original exhaust the replacement covers. A slip-on replaces a smaller rear section; a full system replaces exhaust components from the cylinder heads rearward. The precise boundary and installation requirements depend on the motorcycle and kit. RevZilla’s overview of slip-ons and full systems explains the general distinction.

The right products for every requirements, it is our honor to help you solve the problems
| Option | What it replaces | What to compare |
|---|---|---|
| Slip-on | A smaller rear section of the exhaust | Exact fitment, included connecting hardware, sound and approval for the application, and whether the kit requires a separate heat shield |
| Full system | Exhaust components from the heads rearward | Exact fitment, installation scope, compatibility with sensors and emissions equipment, approval, and any required model-specific components |
A slip-on may involve less replacement work, but that does not establish that every slip-on is easy to install or that it will deliver a particular benefit. Likewise, a full system’s broader replacement scope does not prove it will improve performance on your bike. Compare the product instructions and requirements rather than choosing by category name alone.
Check road, noise, and emissions approval
Approval depends on the specific exhaust, motorcycle, jurisdiction, and intended use. Before purchase, look for documentation that covers the exact part and motorcycle, and check applicable noise and emissions requirements. Confirm whether the configuration retains or accommodates required catalytic converters and sensors.
For U.S. readers, the Environmental Protection Agency says the Clean Air Act prohibits tampering with emissions controls and the use of aftermarket devices intended to defeat them. On July 1, 2026, the EPA announced that it had recognized SEMA’s SC-E program as an alternative certification authority; that policy announcement does not certify every aftermarket exhaust. Read the EPA’s tampering and aftermarket defeat-device guidance and verify documentation for the exact part, along with relevant state and local requirements.

- Accurate: Features exhaust muffler heat shield and 2 adjustable mounting clips for easy installation and direct replacement without modification.
- About: Made of temperature resistant materials, it does not rust or deform, which can prevent the surface of the exhaust pipe from being worn. With good thermal insulation, the protector ensures smooth operation of the exhaust system.
- Information: This exhaust pipe heat shield is designed to fit on the part of the duct that comes into contact with your legs, protecting your legs from burns. Improve motorcycle performance.
- Nice: The muffler heat shield is anodized, is for trim. At the same time, it saves energy, and the flame exhaust pipe heat shield plays a good role in safety protection and can be exhausted.
- Attention: Easy installation: Only need tool is a wrench, no modification saves a lot of time and effort. Please check your exhaust size is suitable for this shield before purchasing.
Manufacturers also describe their own approval and compliance programs. SC-Project says its approved systems are developed and tested against applicable requirements, including noise and material resistance; Yoshimura provides an SC-Project product and approval resource and a Yoshimura emissions-compliance guide. Treat manufacturer information as a starting point: confirm that the claim applies to the exact system and motorcycle you intend to use.
Evaluate performance evidence, not just promises
There is no universal horsepower figure for replacing a motorcycle exhaust. Results depend on the bike and the exhaust configuration. A manufacturer’s product-specific claim is not the same as an independent test on your motorcycle; ask what was tested, on which model, and under what conditions. Kawasaki publishes product-specific performance claims, while SC-Project describes test-bench checks. Neither kind of statement should be generalized to a different bike or exhaust.
Do not treat louder sound as proof of better usable performance. A 1980 U.S. EPA analysis found that, among 82 tested non-competition aftermarket configurations, 50 were 4–16 dB louder than the original-equipment system and 32 were within 3 dB. Those are counts from a historical sample, not a forecast for current products. In a Honda CB750 comparison, the report observed: “It is apparent from the data that the aftermarket exhaust systems designed to increase performance over the original equipment also significantly increase the noise level.” That conclusion describes the report’s historical test comparison, not every exhaust or motorcycle. See the EPA’s 1980 Regulatory Analysis for the Noise Emission Regulations for Motorcycles and Motorcycle Exhaust Systems.

- J-B Weld Muffler Seal: MufflerSeal is an iron reinforced paste designed to seal mufflers, pipe joints and exhaust systems. MufflerSeal can resists up to 700 F.
- Cure Process: MufflerSeal can cure in two ways: By allowing the product to fully harden after it has been applied which can take up to 24 hours (time may vary based on cold or humid work environments) or MufflerSeal can be cured through heat application. You will be able to tell when the product is cured once it is hard.
- Projects: Mufflers, Pipe Joints and Exhaust Systems.
- Package Weight: 12.5 ounces
Compare sound, materials, weight, and what is included
Once fitment and approval are established, compare the details that affect ownership and installation:
- Noise: Review sound information and approval for the exact application. A louder exhaust is not evidence by itself of more power.
- Materials and weight: Compare the manufacturer’s stated material and weight for the specific product. Do not assume a claimed weight saving applies to another model or configuration.
- Included parts: Check for heat shields, fittings, connecting hardware, and any additional model-specific pieces. Confirm using the product listing and part number.
- Installation: Read the instructions to understand the work involved, required tools or additional pieces, and whether professional installation is appropriate.
- Total cost: Include any separately sold shield or required compatible parts, as well as installation costs if you will not fit the system yourself.
Install it with safe routing and secure mounting
Installation must leave the exhaust secure and correctly routed. New Zealand’s Motorcycle Construction Manual, version 1 effective October 1, 2025, says the system should allow necessary engine movement without stressing the exhaust and be “designed to prevent exhaust gases being directed towards the rider or pillion passenger.” This is New Zealand guidance, not a statement of universal law. Consult the manual’s motorcycle construction requirements and the instructions for your exact exhaust; check the rules that apply where the motorcycle is used.
