The right place to service a Chinese-built or Chinese-owned EV in the United States depends on its exact brand, model, VIN and sales channel—not simply on the battery platform or parent company. A Polestar sold through the U.S. market has a documented service network, U.S. warranty and roadside program. A Volvo authorized retailer can perform factory-scheduled maintenance on Volvo vehicles, but a shared Geely platform does not automatically authorize that retailer to repair every related brand. Imported vehicles without a U.S. support structure may have no practical source for software, high-voltage components or warranty work.
Use an authorized network for warranty, software and high-voltage repairs whenever one exists. Independent EV shops are reasonable for work they are equipped and trained to perform, but NHTSA says high-voltage service requires specialized training, protective equipment and diagnostic tools. Confirm parts eligibility and warranty terms in writing before approving non-genuine components.

Start with the exact brand, model and VIN
“Chinese EV” describes where a vehicle is designed, owned or manufactured, not a single service system. Service rights follow the vehicle identification number and the manufacturer’s U.S. programs. Before looking for a repairer, record the brand badge, model year, trim, VIN, date and country of first sale, and whether the vehicle was sold by a U.S. authorized dealer or imported privately.
That distinction determines whether a shop can obtain factory software, campaign information, battery parts and warranty authorization. A vehicle built on a Geely-related architecture may share engineering with another marque, yet the two brands can use different diagnostic subscriptions, parts catalogs and warranty administrators.

Polestar has a documented U.S. pathway
Polestar’s U.S. service information describes a dedicated network of service locations for regular maintenance, software updates, repairs and genuine parts, with online appointment booking. For manufacturing-issue services, Polestar says pickup and delivery may be available within 100 miles of a service point, or 150 miles for model-year 2023 and older vehicles. Its U.S. program also includes 24/7 roadside assistance. Availability is subject to the vehicle and the service location, so confirm the distance and eligibility when booking.
Other brands require VIN-level confirmation
If the vehicle is an imported model or a brand with a limited U.S. presence, ask the manufacturer—or the seller that imported it—for the name and address of an authorized U.S. service point, the parts ordering channel and the warranty administrator. Do not assume that a service center can support the car because it works on another vehicle using similar cells, motors or charging hardware.
Understand the warranty before authorizing work
Separate the basic vehicle warranty from the high-voltage battery and motor warranty. They often have different time and mileage limits, and a warranty page for another country is not evidence of U.S. coverage.

Polestar’s 8-year/100,000-mile battery and motor term appears in both its U.S. warranty FAQ and a 2024 service bulletin filed with NHTSA. The bulletin’s component list is not a promise that every battery-related complaint will be approved; the vehicle’s warranty booklet, diagnostic findings and VIN applicability control.

Warranty claims need a paper trail
Keep the repair order, diagnostic codes, mileage, software version, parts numbers and photographs of warning messages. Ask the service adviser to identify the warranty provision or campaign number before paid work begins. If a claim is denied, request the reason in writing and ask what test result would distinguish a covered defect from damage, maintenance neglect or a wear item.
Choose the service channel by the job
Authorized service for software and high-voltage systems
Factory service is the safest default for battery management faults, isolation faults, inverter or electric-axle problems, software campaigns, recalls and warranty diagnostics. Authorized sites can access the manufacturer’s diagnostic environment and order VIN-specific components. For Polestar, begin with its online service-point booking system and ask whether the location handles your model year.
Independent EV specialists for supported work
An independent shop can be suitable for tires, alignment, brakes, suspension, cabin filters, 12-volt batteries and other work it explicitly supports. Verify that it has a documented high-voltage procedure, insulated tools, battery lifting or isolation equipment where required, and a way to obtain the correct service information. “Works on hybrids” is not the same as being qualified for the particular EV’s battery voltage and architecture.

Mobile and general repair shops
Mobile technicians may handle low-voltage or mechanical tasks, but do not authorize a high-voltage enclosure to be opened unless the technician can demonstrate model-specific training and equipment. A general shop should refer battery, inverter, charger and orange-cable work to a qualified EV facility.

High-voltage work is not a DIY repair
NHTSA states that an EV should be serviced by a qualified technician with specialized EV-specific high-voltage training. The agency points to the need for appropriate personal protective equipment and testing or diagnostic equipment, and warns that an unqualified attempt can cause severe injury or death.
- Do not remove battery covers, disconnect orange cables or probe high-voltage terminals without the manufacturer’s procedure and verified training.
- Ask a shop how it establishes a de-energized state and how it protects the vehicle from re-energizing during work.
- Confirm that the shop has insulated tools, rated gloves and test equipment appropriate to the vehicle, not merely generic scan equipment.
- Follow the owner’s manual for emergency isolation, storage and charging after a collision or water exposure.
12-volt battery and towing cautions
NHTSA notes that an EV’s high-voltage battery cannot be jump-started. The 12-volt battery generally can be jump-started, subject to the owner’s manual. Tell the roadside provider that the vehicle is electric and provide the model and drivetrain. EVs need extra care when towed; towing on the drive axle can damage the vehicle. Use the prescribed flatbed or wheel-lift method and the manufacturer’s neutral or transport procedure.
Parts: genuine, certified aftermarket and wear items
Ask for the part number, source and warranty treatment on every estimate. Genuine parts are the most straightforward route for a warranty repair because the authorized network can match them to the VIN and software configuration. Availability for a particular imported model is not guaranteed, and no U.S.-wide statistic for Chinese-EV parts supply or repair pricing has been established.

Volvo’s 2025 U.S. warranty manual says an owner may use a part other than a genuine Volvo or genuine Volvo remanufactured part when the part manufacturer has certified it for the maintenance, repair or replacement, without automatically invalidating the vehicle warranty. That does not make every aftermarket part equivalent, nor does it shift the burden of proving maintenance or a defect. Keep invoices and certification records, and check the specific warranty terms and applicable law.

Can a Volvo dealer service a Geely-based or related EV?
Platform or ownership relationships do not create blanket service authorization. Volvo Cars USA says any Volvo Cars authorized retailer in the United States can perform factory scheduled maintenance on Volvo vehicles. That statement does not say that every retailer can service a Polestar, an imported model or another brand using related technology.
Call the retailer with the VIN and ask three separate questions: whether it will accept the vehicle, whether it can perform the requested operation, and whether it can process the work under that brand’s warranty. A “yes” for tires or brake work may not extend to battery diagnostics, software programming or a high-voltage component replacement. For Polestar warranty work, use the Polestar service network unless Polestar confirms another arrangement for your VIN.

- Gather the vehicle record. Write down the VIN, model year, mileage, warning messages, charging behavior and the country and channel of purchase.
- Check the brand’s U.S. support page and warranty booklet. Look for an authorized-location directory, online booking, roadside number, recall lookup and parts policy.
- Call before driving in. Ask whether the site supports your exact model year, can access factory diagnostics and has the required high-voltage certification.
- Describe the symptom precisely. Distinguish a no-start condition caused by the 12-volt system from a high-voltage or charging fault; do not ask a technician to guess from a generic error message.
- Request a written estimate and warranty decision. It should list diagnosis, labor, parts source, taxes, any diagnostic fee and the reason a component is or is not covered.
- Preserve records. Keep invoices, maintenance dates, software versions and replaced-part information for future claims or resale.
Regional and imported-vehicle limitations
Warranty language published for another market cannot be presented as a U.S. warranty. The BYD warranty figures located for this subject come from a Middle East/Africa page; they do not establish coverage for a vehicle in the United States. For any imported EV, obtain a U.S.-specific written warranty, a parts supply commitment and a plan for recalls before purchase.

Owner checklist before the next service visit
- Confirm whether the work is scheduled maintenance, a warranty claim, a recall or customer-pay repair.
- Verify the service location’s authorization for your brand and VIN, not merely its experience with another EV.
- For high-voltage work, ask about EV-specific training, PPE, isolation testing and diagnostic equipment.
- Ask whether pickup, delivery or roadside assistance applies and what distance limits govern it.
- Get written approval before substituting aftermarket, remanufactured, used or salvage parts.
- Follow the model-specific towing and 12-volt jump-start instructions in the owner’s manual.

Does a Geely platform let any Volvo retailer repair my EV?
No. A shared platform does not establish brand authorization. Give the retailer your VIN and confirm separately whether it can perform the specific mechanical, software or high-voltage operation and process the warranty.
Are Polestar’s battery and motor terms the same as its basic warranty?

Do aftermarket parts automatically void a Volvo warranty?
No. Volvo’s 2025 U.S. warranty manual allows parts certified by the part manufacturer for the maintenance, repair or replacement without automatic invalidation. Documentation, the specific warranty terms and proof that the part or installation caused no damage still matter.
