There isn’t enough verified evidence here to name the five most affordable Japanese cars with NHTSA five-star ratings. NHTSA’s 2026 page identifies vehicles selected for testing, not completed star ratings. The available evidence does support a comparison of five 2026 Japanese-car candidates by manufacturer starting price and, where documented, separate IIHS awards. None should be treated as a confirmed five-car NHTSA ranking.
Why this is not a verified five-star ranking
NHTSA and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) use different safety-rating systems. NHTSA’s page describes vehicles selected for 2026 model-year testing; selection does not mean a vehicle has received a published result, let alone five stars. NHTSA’s ratings page explains its testing process.
IIHS Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+ are award designations, not NHTSA star ratings. An IIHS award cannot be substituted for an NHTSA five-star result. Ratings can also depend on the exact model year and body style, so a result for a hatchback does not automatically apply to its sedan counterpart.
Five 2026 Japanese-car candidates and their starting prices
The table compares manufacturer-listed starting prices with the specific IIHS evidence available. Prices are MSRPs, not transaction prices; destination, options, taxes, and dealer charges can affect what a buyer pays. “Not established” means a matching result was not identified in the cited material; it does not mean the vehicle failed a test.

How to check a safety rating before you buy
- Match the vehicle precisely. Confirm model year, body style, and trim. A sedan and hatchback can have different award or rating status.
- Identify the rating organization. Look for an NHTSA star result if you want an NHTSA rating; read IIHS awards as a separate system.
- Confirm the result is completed. A vehicle listed as selected for testing does not yet have a published star rating.
- Compare the price basis. Check whether the listed MSRP includes destination and handling, then account for options, taxes, and dealer charges.
- Consider vehicle size. IIHS cautions that “a small car that qualifies for an award might not protect its occupants as well as a bigger vehicle that doesn’t earn the award.” An award is useful context, not a substitute for considering the size of the vehicle you need.
