What China’s standard requires
The rule is GB 48001—2026, Safety Technical Requirements for Automotive Door Handles. According to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), its central requirements are:
- Every door must have a handle that can be operated mechanically from both inside and outside the vehicle.
- Exterior handles must provide hand-operation space of at least 60 × 25 × 20 mm.
These requirements focus on whether a handle can be operated mechanically and whether a person has enough space to use the exterior handle. The available MIIT summary does not establish that every retractable mechanism is prohibited, nor does it provide the full standard text. [MIIT]
When the requirements apply

Does this ban all retractable handles?
No blanket ban on retractable handles is established by the requirements summarized by MIIT. The practical effect depends on the design: a flush or retractable handle that cannot provide mechanical opening from outside, the required hand space, or usable inside and outside operation will need redesign to comply. A retractable mechanism that meets the standard’s requirements is not shown by the available summary to be prohibited simply because it retracts.
That distinction matters when reading headlines that say China is banning “all” hidden handles. The rule sets functional and dimensional requirements; the summarized text does not identify every mechanism that would pass or fail.

Why China is changing the rules
MIIT says the safety rationale includes the possibility that electrically operated handles could become unavailable after a severe collision if power fails, making rescue more difficult. It also cites concern that freezing can impede operation. These are the risks described by MIIT, not evidence that all flush handles fail or a quantified rate of handle-related incidents. [MIIT]
Which cars could be affected?
MIIT reported that about 60% of the top 100 new-energy vehicle models in China by sales in April 2025 had hidden handles. That figure describes that specific group and period; it does not mean 60% of all cars on the road or all new cars. [MIIT]

The Associated Press cited the Tesla Model Y and Model 3, BMW iX3, and vehicles from Chinese brands as examples of cars with retractable handles that could be affected. The MIIT summary gives these headline requirements but is not the full standard, so it does not establish every detail an automaker must satisfy for compliance.
