Chevrolet Multi-Flex and GMC MultiPro are two names for the same six-function tailgate concept. Chevrolet uses Multi-Flex on the Silverado 1500, while GMC uses MultiPro on the Sierra 1500. The current 2026 descriptions list the same six positions: primary gate, primary-gate load stop, easy access, full-width step, inner-gate load stop and inner gate with work surface. The meaningful buying differences are the truck’s exact trim and configuration, whether the feature is fitted, and which functions you will actually use—not a claimed advantage in the basic mechanism.
The short answer: names and truck equipment are the real differences
Chevrolet calls its split tailgate Multi-Flex. GMC calls the corresponding Sierra system MultiPro. Chevrolet’s current 2026 Silverado 1500 description and GMC’s 2026 Sierra 1500 description both present a six-function design intended to make loading, unloading and reaching the cargo bed easier.

On the evidence of those official descriptions, neither system has an extra advertised position that the other lacks. Both describe a conventional full-width gate, a load-stop position for the primary gate, a smaller inner gate for easier reach, a step configuration, an inner-gate load stop and an inner-gate work surface.
That does not prove that every component, hinge, latch, wiring harness or replacement part is shared. The feature pages establish matching functions, not part-number interchangeability or retrofit compatibility. Treat a Silverado and Sierra as separate vehicles when checking equipment, accessories or repairs.

The 375-pound figure belongs specifically to Chevrolet’s full-width step. It is a manufacturer specification for that step, not a rating for every tailgate position, the cargo box, or the truck’s payload.
What each of the six positions does
1. Primary gate
The primary gate is the normal full-width tailgate position. Chevrolet says it can be opened from the key fob, an in-cab switch or a button on the gate. In this position, the gate serves the familiar purpose of closing the bed and creating a loading edge when lowered.
Use the primary gate when you need the broadest opening or when loading items that do not benefit from the inner gate. Because the tailgate remains a moving part, keep people and loose straps clear while opening or closing it, and follow the operating instructions for the specific truck.

With the primary gate lowered into its load-stop configuration, the gate helps keep long objects from sliding out of the bed. This is useful for lumber, ladders, trim, pipes and other cargo that extends beyond the closed bed but still needs a rear support.
A load stop is a positioning aid, not permission to carry an unsecured object. Long cargo still needs the tie-down method and overhang precautions appropriate to its size. Do not assume the load-stop position changes the truck’s payload rating.
3. Easy-access position
The smaller inner gate folds down so you can reach farther into the cargo bed. Instead of climbing onto the bumper or leaning over a closed tailgate, you can stand behind the truck and use the lower opening to retrieve items farther forward.

This position is especially practical when the bed contains tool cases, groceries, camping equipment or boxed materials that would otherwise require repeated reaching over the full-height gate. It improves access; it does not create a seat or a certified step unless the gate is configured as the step described below.

The inner gate folds into a broad step for entering the bed. Chevrolet states that its Multi-Flex step is capable of holding up to 375 pounds. That number is Chevrolet’s published specification for the step and should be read with the exact wording attached to it.
Do not transfer the 375-pound figure to the inner gate, the primary gate, the bed floor or any other use. A person using the step should keep three points of contact where practical, check that the gate is fully in its step position and avoid jumping or applying sudden loads. The owner’s manual for the particular truck takes precedence over a general feature description.
5. Inner-gate load stop
The inner gate can also act as a second-tier load stop. This helps keep items positioned above the bed floor from sliding rearward when the primary gate is open or when the bed is being used in a two-level loading arrangement.
The useful distinction is location: the primary-gate load stop supports longer cargo at the outer tailgate, while the inner-gate load stop is intended to retain items at the inner gate. Neither description establishes a maximum cargo weight for that position, so use the truck’s cargo and tie-down guidance rather than treating the load stop as a structural rating.

6. Inner gate with work surface
In work-surface mode, the inner gate provides a place for a laptop, plans or blueprints while also supporting second-tier loading. That can turn the rear of the truck into a temporary field workstation for measuring, reviewing drawings or organizing materials.

Protect electronics and paperwork from weather, vibration and spills. The feature description identifies a work surface and second-tier loading support; it does not promise weather protection, a built-in clamp, a power outlet or a stated weight limit for the work surface.
How the two systems differ in daily use
If you need a step
Both names point to a step function, so the decision starts with whether the exact Silverado or Sierra you are buying actually includes the feature. Chevrolet publishes the 375-pound step specification; the reviewed GMC description does not publish a separate capacity figure. That difference in published information is not evidence that the GMC step has a different capacity. It simply means you should obtain the Sierra’s vehicle-specific documentation before relying on a number.
If you load long materials
Both systems advertise a primary-gate load stop. The choice therefore depends more on bed length, cab and drivetrain configuration, the truck’s payload information and the trim’s equipment than on the tailgate name. Confirm that the particular truck has the Multi-Flex or MultiPro assembly before planning a materials-hauling routine around it.
If reaching into the bed is the priority
Both systems include easy access through the inner gate. Compare the rest of the truck—bed dimensions, ride height, tie-down points and the way you organize cargo—because the same tailgate function can feel more or less useful depending on what is stored in front of it.
If you want a mobile work area
Both descriptions include an inner-gate work surface. A contractor who reviews plans at the truck may value that position more than the step, while a family buyer may use the step and easy-access positions more often. The feature set itself does not identify one brand as having a broader work-surface capability.
2026 availability: verify the exact truck, not just the model name
For 2026, Chevrolet’s Silverado 1500 material calls Multi-Flex available equipment. GMC’s Sierra 1500 material presents MultiPro as an available feature and is organized around trim families including Pro, SLE, Elevation and SLT. “Available” does not mean every truck on a dealer lot has the tailgate. Equipment can vary by trim, package, cab, bed, drivetrain and individual build.

The reliable way to confirm a truck is to match the physical vehicle and its paperwork:
- Read the window sticker. Look for the Multi-Flex or MultiPro name in the equipment section and check whether it is standard, included in a package or listed as an option.
- Check the build sheet or vehicle-order summary. The equipment code and description should correspond to the actual vehicle identification number, not a generic model brochure.
- Inspect the truck. Look for the split inner gate and verify that the advertised positions can be demonstrated without forcing the mechanism.
- Ask the dealer to confirm the VIN-specific equipment. Have the salesperson identify the tailgate on the build record and explain any package or trim requirement.
- Confirm replacement and accessory fitment separately. A Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 may share a six-function description while still requiring different catalog listings or installation instructions.
The 2025 Chevrolet and GMC product/build pages provide historical context: both brands were already describing six-function systems under their respective names. Use those pages to understand the naming history, not as a substitute for checking a 2026 vehicle’s equipment.
Operating the tailgate safely
The exact control layout and sequence can depend on the vehicle. Chevrolet’s description identifies key-fob, in-cab-switch and gate-button operation for the primary gate; the general feature descriptions do not provide a complete Sierra control procedure. Read the owner’s manual before using a position for the first time.
- Park and clear the area. Make sure no person, trailer component, hitch accessory or cargo strap is in the gate’s path.
- Open the primary gate using the truck’s specified control. Do not pull or push a partially released gate against resistance.
- Select the needed configuration. Use the inner gate for easy access, the step position for bed entry, a load-stop position for retaining cargo, or the work-surface position for plans and a laptop.
- Check that the gate is fully latched in its selected position. A visual check is especially important before stepping on the full-width step or placing cargo against a load stop.
- Load and secure the cargo. The tailgate functions help position items, but they do not replace appropriate tie-downs or the truck’s payload limits.
- Return the gate to the normal closed position before driving. Remove items from the work surface and confirm that the primary gate and inner gate are secured.
Capacity, payload and what the 375-pound number does—and does not—mean
Chevrolet’s published figure is clear and narrow: the Multi-Flex full-width step is capable of holding up to 375 pounds. It is not a comparative test result, and it is not an independent laboratory measurement. It is a manufacturer specification.
That specification should not be combined with the truck’s payload rating. Payload covers the vehicle’s permitted load under the applicable configuration; the step figure describes the step itself. A person standing on the step, cargo resting on a load stop and weight distributed across the bed are different use cases. Consult the door-jamb certification label and owner’s manual for the vehicle’s payload and operating limits.

The reviewed GMC page does not provide a separate step-capacity number. Do not infer that its rating is higher, lower or identical from the shared six-function wording. Ask for Sierra-specific documentation if a numerical step limit matters to your work.

Chevrolet’s official accessories catalog lists a KICKER Tailgate Bluetooth Audio System designed for the Multi-Flex Tailgate. The listing covers Silverado 1500 model years 2019 through 2026 and describes Bluetooth compatibility plus a one-amp USB port that can charge a device or play from a USB memory stick.
This is an optional accessory, not standard equipment included with every Multi-Flex or MultiPro tailgate. Confirm the exact truck’s fitment, installation requirements and current catalog availability before purchasing. The listing cited here is for Silverado 1500 fitment; do not assume it fits a Sierra or that a Sierra version is included without a vehicle-specific listing.
Are the tailgates interchangeable or retrofittable?
Matching functions do not establish mechanical interchangeability. The official descriptions reviewed for 2026 explain what each system does, but they do not provide common part numbers, mounting dimensions, wiring compatibility or a retrofit procedure.

Ask for confirmation of the complete assembly and its control components rather than relying on the Multi-Flex or MultiPro name alone.
Which system should you choose?
Choose based on the job, not the badge
If the Silverado and Sierra you are comparing both have their respective six-function tailgates, the advertised capabilities are effectively the same. Base the decision on the truck’s price, powertrain, bed and cab configuration, payload information, warranty terms and the trim equipment that matters to you. The tailgate name by itself does not establish a functional winner.
Prioritize the step for frequent bed entry
For repeated loading and unloading, the full-width step and easy-access positions may save more effort than a conventional gate. Confirm the actual step rating for the vehicle documentation you are buying; Chevrolet’s published figure is up to 375 pounds for its step.
Prioritize load stops for long or two-tier cargo
Choose the truck whose exact build gives you the load-stop functions and enough bed length and payload for your materials. The primary and inner load stops solve different positioning problems, so consider whether you carry long items, smaller items above the bed floor, or both.

Prioritize the work surface for field paperwork
The inner-gate work surface is most useful when you regularly review plans, use a laptop at the job site or need a stable place for notes. Bring the devices and cases you actually use when inspecting the truck, and verify how they fit without blocking the gate or exposing them to weather.
Buyer checklist before signing for a 2026 Silverado or Sierra
- Confirm the model year is 2026 if that is the equipment year you intend to buy.
- Verify Multi-Flex or MultiPro on the VIN-specific window sticker or build sheet.
- Identify whether the feature is standard, optional or package-dependent on the exact trim.
