Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf Apple CarPlay or Android Auto is not connecting in a Chevy Equinox, start by confirming that your exact Equinox year, trim, phone and connection method support projection. Then use the matching fix: a USB data cable and data-capable port for wired connections, or Bluetooth and Wi-Fi pairing for supported wireless systems. Chevrolet also says the 2026 Equinox EV does not include Apple CarPlay or Android Auto; it uses Google built-in instead, so that vehicle is not experiencing a connection fault when those icons are absent. Check your model-year manual and Chevrolet’s vehicle-specific smartphone integration information before changing settings.
For a compatible vehicle, the usual owner-level causes are an incompatible or damaged cable, a charging-only USB port, projection disabled in the vehicle or phone, an unfinished consent prompt, disabled Bluetooth or Wi-Fi for wireless use, outdated software, or a stale saved pairing. The sequence below separates wired and wireless checks so you do not apply a wireless fix to a vehicle that only supports USB projection.

First, identify what should work in your Equinox
“Equinox” covers multiple model years, infotainment systems and trims. Before troubleshooting, write down four details: the model year, trim, phone model and operating-system version, and whether you are trying to connect by USB or wirelessly. The owner’s manual for that year is the authority for available features, the correct USB port and menu names. Chevrolet’s smartphone-integration overview also notes that availability varies by vehicle and phone.
Do not confuse Equinox with Equinox EV
Chevrolet’s official 2026 Equinox EV page states that Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not included. The vehicle uses Google built-in services instead. If you own that model, searching for a missing CarPlay or Android Auto icon is not a repair procedure; use the vehicle’s built-in system or confirm options with Chevrolet.

Separate wired and wireless projection
A vehicle can support phone projection through USB without supporting wireless projection. Chevrolet describes wireless projection as available only on selected compatible vehicles and phones. Do not assume that a Bluetooth music connection means wireless CarPlay or Android Auto is supported: ordinary Bluetooth audio and full phone projection are different functions.
| Connection you expect | What must be supported | First physical check | Relevant software or settings |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wired Apple CarPlay or Android Auto | A compatible Equinox infotainment system, compatible phone and a USB data path | Use a data-capable USB port and an undamaged phone cable | Projection enabled; phone unlocked; consent and permission prompts accepted |
| Wireless Apple CarPlay or Android Auto | A selected Equinox system and phone that support wireless projection | Bluetooth and Wi-Fi enabled on both sides | Wireless setup prompts completed; software current; old pairings removed if necessary |
| 2026 Equinox EV | CarPlay and Android Auto are not equipped according to Chevrolet | There is no supported CarPlay/Android Auto connection to test | Use Google built-in or ask Chevrolet about the vehicle’s documented features |
Use the symptom to choose the right branch
The same “not connecting” message can describe different failures. Match what you see to the most useful first check instead of replacing parts immediately.
| What you see | Most useful first checks |
|---|---|
| The phone charges but CarPlay or Android Auto never appears | Confirm the port is a USB data port, try the phone’s original or a high-quality compatible cable, unlock the phone, accept prompts and check that projection is enabled. |
| The phone is not recognized at all | Reseat both connectors, inspect the cable for damage, try the correct data port, restart the phone and vehicle, then test a known-good compatible cable. |
| The projection icon is present but does nothing | Complete the phone and vehicle permission prompts, check the Apps setting, and tap the CarPlay or Android Auto icon from the Home Page. |
| Wireless setup cannot find the vehicle | Verify wireless support for this Equinox and phone, turn on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, update software, and remove an old saved pairing before trying again. |
| It worked previously but now drops or refuses to reconnect | Restart both devices, forget the vehicle on the phone and in the center display, then pair again using the year-specific instructions. |
| CarPlay or Android Auto options are completely absent | Check the model year, trim and vehicle type. In particular, Chevrolet says the 2026 Equinox EV does not provide these services. |
Fix a wired connection step by step
The 2021 Chevrolet Equinox owner’s manual documents USB projection and is a useful example of the checks required on a wired system. Your year may use different labels or port locations, so use the corresponding manual when a menu does not match.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →1. Find a USB port that carries data
Many vehicles have more than one USB socket, and a socket intended only for charging cannot carry CarPlay or Android Auto data. Check the manual for the port designated for smartphone projection. Connect directly to that port rather than through a hub, extension or adapter while diagnosing the problem. Make sure the connector is fully seated at the phone and vehicle ends.
2. Use a suitable cable
Chevrolet’s current guidance recommends the phone manufacturer’s original cable or a high-quality compatible cable and says to avoid damaged cables. The 2021 Equinox manual specifically recommends the factory-provided cable and warns that aftermarket or third-party cables may not work. A cable can deliver power while its data conductors are damaged, so “the phone is charging” does not prove that the cable is suitable for projection.

- Inspect both plugs for bent, loose or contaminated contacts.
- Do not assume a connector type or cable length is correct for every Equinox year and phone; confirm the physical connector and data capability for your equipment.
- For a diagnostic test, use a short, undamaged cable known to transfer data with the same phone.
- If a new cable changes nothing, do not keep buying cables: settings, software, an unsupported feature or vehicle hardware may be the actual issue.
3. Connect with the phone unlocked
Unlock the phone before plugging it in and leave it awake while the first connection is negotiated. Read every prompt on the phone and infotainment display. Declining a permission request or dismissing it without completing setup can leave the phone charging while projection remains unavailable.
4. Accept the vehicle’s projection consent prompt
The 2021 manual identifies a first-connection prompt called “Device Projection Privacy Consent.” Accept it if you want projection to start. Interface wording can differ by model year and infotainment version, but a privacy, data-sharing or projection-consent screen serves the same purpose: the vehicle will not launch the service until the required consent is completed.
5. Confirm projection is enabled in the vehicle
On the 2021 system, the manual places the control at Home > Settings > Apps. Check that Apple CarPlay or Android Auto has not been disabled. Menu names and locations can vary, so use your own manual if those labels are different. Chevrolet’s Apple guidance also says CarPlay must be enabled on the iPhone as well as in the vehicle.
6. Launch it manually when automatic start fails
Some phones illuminate the projection icon only after the vehicle recognizes them. If the service does not open automatically after the USB connection is accepted, go to the infotainment Home Page and tap the CarPlay or Android Auto icon. The 2021 manual documents this manual-launch path. If no icon appears after the cable, port, consent and settings checks, return to compatibility and data-port checks instead of repeatedly tapping the screen.
7. Test the phone’s permissions
Keep the phone unlocked during the first setup and approve requests for contacts, messages, notifications or voice functions according to your privacy preferences. A privacy choice can limit a feature, but it should not be treated as evidence of a failed USB port. If the phone’s own CarPlay or Android Auto settings contain a disabled vehicle entry, re-enable it or remove the saved entry and set it up again.

Fix a wireless connection step by step
Wireless troubleshooting applies only after you establish that the exact Equinox infotainment system and phone support wireless CarPlay or Android Auto. Chevrolet’s support pages do not say that every Equinox has this capability.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
1. Turn on both required radios
Enable Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on the phone. Ensure the vehicle’s wireless functions are enabled as well. Wireless projection uses more than a conventional Bluetooth audio connection, so a phone that can stream music may still fail to start CarPlay or Android Auto if Wi-Fi is off.
2. Start setup from the vehicle and phone prompts
Follow the pairing instructions shown on the phone and center display, compare the confirmation code when one is shown, and approve the projection request. Keep the phone nearby and unlocked during setup. If the vehicle offers separate choices for phone calls, audio and projection, select the projection option rather than stopping after basic Bluetooth pairing.
3. Check software updates
Chevrolet’s Apple CarPlay and Android Auto troubleshooting guidance includes checking available phone and vehicle software updates. Install updates according to the phone maker’s instructions and the vehicle’s documented procedure, then restart before attempting setup again. Update availability and installation steps vary by phone, model year and infotainment system; do not interrupt a vehicle update or disconnect power unless the vehicle instructions explicitly permit it.
4. Remove a stale wireless pairing
A previously saved vehicle entry can prevent a clean negotiation after a phone update, vehicle update or settings change. Delete or forget the Equinox from the phone’s Bluetooth or projection list, and remove the phone from the vehicle’s saved-device list. Then restart both and perform a new pairing rather than selecting an old entry.

Restart before assuming a hardware failure
Chevrolet recommends restarting the phone and vehicle as part of both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto troubleshooting. A restart clears a temporary process or radio state without changing the vehicle’s feature availability.
Basic restart sequence
- Park safely and switch off the projection attempt.
- Restart the phone using its normal power procedure.
- Turn the vehicle off, wait for the infotainment system to shut down as described in the owner’s manual, and start the vehicle again.
- For wired use, reconnect with the data cable after the system is fully started. For wireless use, turn Bluetooth and Wi-Fi back on and begin a fresh pairing if required.
Chevrolet publishes additional vehicle shutdown and restart instructions for Android Auto. Because the exact sequence can vary by vehicle, follow the instructions on the Android Auto support page and in your owner’s manual rather than improvising a battery-disconnection procedure.
Rebuild a failed Apple CarPlay pairing
For CarPlay that worked before but will not reconnect, Chevrolet’s Apple CarPlay troubleshooting guidance recommends removing the saved relationship on both sides.
- In the Equinox center display, delete or forget the saved iPhone connection.
- On the iPhone, forget or remove the Equinox from the relevant Bluetooth or CarPlay vehicle list.
- Restart the iPhone and the vehicle.
- Reconnect with the correct USB data cable, or begin wireless setup if both systems support it.
- Accept the vehicle and phone prompts, then test a call, audio playback and the projection screen separately.
Removing a pairing erases the saved connection, not the phone’s personal data. You may need to approve contacts, notifications and other permissions again.

Rebuild a failed Android Auto pairing
Use the same principle for Android Auto: remove the old vehicle entry, restart both devices and complete setup again. Chevrolet’s Android Auto support instructions include cable, settings, restart, wireless Bluetooth/Wi-Fi and escalation checks. Follow the exact prompts for your phone and Equinox because Android menus differ by manufacturer and operating-system version.

- Forget the Equinox in the phone’s Bluetooth and Android Auto-related saved-device screens.
- Remove the phone from the vehicle’s saved-device list.
- Restart the phone and vehicle.
- For a wired test, use the correct USB data port and a known-good compatible cable. For a wireless test, enable Bluetooth and Wi-Fi first.
- Accept Android Auto permissions and any vehicle projection-consent screen.
If Android Auto still fails after the documented restart sequence, Chevrolet says you can press the blue OnStar button or visit a dealership for assistance. Do not infer that the USB port, radio or phone module has failed without a technician’s assessment.
Settings and software checks that are easy to miss
Projection may be disabled in the vehicle
A previous owner or driver can disable projection in the infotainment Apps settings. On the 2021 Equinox, the manual documents disabling projection from Home > Settings > Apps. If your year uses another path, search the manual for “projection,” “Apple CarPlay” or “Android Auto.”
The phone may block the vehicle
Check the phone’s CarPlay or Android Auto settings for a disabled vehicle, parental restriction or permission choice. Chevrolet’s Apple guidance specifically calls for enabling CarPlay on the phone as well as in the vehicle. For Android, use the current Android Auto settings and permission screens supplied by the phone manufacturer.

Updates can affect compatibility
After a phone operating-system update, the vehicle may need a fresh pairing or an infotainment update. Check both update paths before concluding that the service is unsupported. An update can also change menu labels, so rely on the current owner’s manual for your model year.
What not to conclude too quickly
- Charging proves data works: It does not. A charging-only port or a cable with failed data conductors can still supply power.
- Bluetooth music proves wireless projection works: It does not. Wireless CarPlay and Android Auto require supported vehicle and phone combinations plus Wi-Fi and setup prompts.
- No icon means the radio is broken: The icon can be absent because the feature is unsupported, disabled, not consented to, or not detected through the cable.
- One unsuccessful cable proves the vehicle is faulty: Cable quality and compatibility vary. Test the correct data port with a known-good compatible cable first.
- Every Equinox should have the same menus: Model year, trim and infotainment software change labels and procedures.
When to stop owner-level troubleshooting
Contact Chevrolet support or a dealership when the exact vehicle and phone are confirmed compatible, the correct connection path has been tested, projection is enabled, prompts are accepted, software is current, and a restart plus fresh pairing does not restore recognition. Chevrolet provides support routes through its smartphone integration support pages; its Android Auto guidance also identifies the blue OnStar button and dealership assistance as escalation options.
Give the adviser a concise record: Equinox year and trim, phone model and operating-system version, wired or wireless method, port used, cable type, whether the phone charges, the exact on-screen message, and which restart or re-pair steps were completed. That information helps distinguish an unsupported configuration from a software or hardware problem.
Quick Recap
A practical checklist for the next connection attempt
- Confirm the vehicle is the Equinox model and year you think it is, not a 2026 Equinox EV that lacks CarPlay and Android Auto.
- Verify that the owner’s manual lists the desired wired or wireless projection method for your trim and phone.
- For USB, use the documented data port and the phone’s original or a high-quality compatible undamaged cable.
- Unlock the phone and accept the vehicle privacy-consent and phone permission prompts.
- Check the vehicle’s projection setting, including Home > Settings > Apps where that path applies.
- If automatic launch fails, tap the CarPlay or Android Auto icon on the infotainment Home Page.
- For wireless, enable Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on both phone and vehicle and complete the on-screen pairing.
- Install available phone and vehicle updates.
- Restart both devices.
- If the pairing is stale, forget the vehicle on both sides and set it up again.
- Escalate with the vehicle, phone, cable and symptom details if the documented checks fail.
