Is a Chevy Malibu better than a Nissan Altima? Not as a straightforward new-car matchup: Chevrolet says the 2025 Malibu was the sedan’s final model year, while Nissan lists a 2026 Altima. In practice, the choice is between a specific used Malibu and a new or used Altima. Compare the vehicles’ year, trim, drivetrain, mileage, condition, price and history—not just their nameplates.
Should you buy a used Chevy Malibu or a new Nissan Altima?
Choose based on the actual vehicles available to you. A used Malibu may make sense if its condition, service history and asking price fit your needs. A new 2026 Altima offers a current model with listed front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations, but its manufacturer starting price is not the same as a dealer’s out-the-door quote.
Chevrolet confirms that “The 2025 model marked the last year of this iconic midsize sedan” on its discontinued-vehicles page. Nissan’s Altima model page and 2026 Altima press kit cover the current 2026 model.
- Consider a Malibu if you have found a particular used car with a clean history, documented maintenance and condition that checks out in an inspection.
- Consider an Altima if you want a current model year, are comparing new-car offers, or want the choice of FWD and AWD configurations.
- Don’t decide from model names alone. A well-maintained example and a neglected one can be very different purchases, even when they share a model year and trim.
What differs between the 2026 Altima and the documented Malibu specifications?
The figures below are not a same-year comparison. The Altima column describes Nissan’s 2026 model; the Malibu figures come from Chevrolet’s 2024 brochure, not a complete 2025 specification set. Use them to understand the available published information, not to declare a direct winner.

| Item | 2026 Nissan Altima | 2024 Chevrolet Malibu |
|---|---|---|
| Powertrain | 2.5-liter four-cylinder; up to 188 hp on select configurations, according to Nissan’s 2026 press kit. | 1.5L turbo inline-four, CVT and 163 hp, according to Chevrolet’s 2024 Malibu brochure. |
| Drivetrain choices established here | FWD and AWD configurations listed by Nissan’s Altima specifications page. | The cited 2024 brochure specifies the 1.5L turbo/CVT setup; it does not establish an AWD comparison. |
| EPA-estimated fuel economy | FWD: 26 city / 36 highway / 30 combined mpg. AWD: 25 city / 33 highway / 28 combined mpg. These are Nissan’s EPA estimates in its 2026 press kit; actual mileage varies. | A matched 2025 Malibu EPA figure is not established by the sources cited here; no direct MPG comparison is available. |
| Cargo capacity | 15.4 cu. ft., per Nissan’s 2026 Altima specifications. | 15.7 cu. ft., per Chevrolet’s 2024 brochure. The model years differ, so this is not a like-for-like test. |
| Front / rear legroom | 43.8 in. / 35.2 in., per Nissan’s 2026 Altima specifications. | Not stated in the cited 2024 Malibu brochure. |
How do the Altima’s fuel economy and drivetrain options compare?
Nissan’s 2026 press kit gives the Altima EPA-estimated fuel economy of 26/36/30 mpg city/highway/combined for FWD and 25/33/28 mpg for AWD. Both use regular fuel, and actual mileage varies. AWD has lower listed estimates than FWD, so consider whether its added traction is useful for your driving and climate before choosing a configuration.
The available Malibu documentation here does not provide a matched 2025 EPA figure. Chevrolet’s 2024 brochure identifies a 1.5L turbo engine paired with a CVT, but that is not enough to make a direct fuel-economy comparison with the 2026 Altima. Check the exact used car’s model-year EPA label and configuration before estimating fuel costs.

What safety equipment and crash-test evidence are available?
Altima safety equipment
Nissan lists Safety Shield 360 as standard on the 2026 Altima. Its listed technologies are Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, High Beam Assist, Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Warning, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Rear Automatic Braking. Nissan cautions that driver-assistance features have limits and do not replace attentive driving. Equipment names alone do not establish how well systems perform.
IIHS results and the tested model year
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s 2026 Altima page lists Good for small overlap front, Marginal for the updated moderate overlap front test, Poor for the updated side test, Acceptable headlights and Poor standard front crash prevention vehicle-to-vehicle results. The page identifies the tested vehicle as a 2024 Altima 2.5 S; those results should not be described as tests of a 2026 car.

Malibu evidence
Chevrolet’s 2024 Malibu brochure lists standard Chevy Safety Assist with six technologies, but the cited sources do not establish a like-for-like 2025 Malibu IIHS comparison. Check the equipment and recall status of the particular Malibu you are considering, and compare independent results only when the tested year and evaluation are clear.
How should you compare price and availability?
Nissan’s Altima specifications page lists starting MSRPs of $27,000 for the S FWD, $27,430 for the SV FWD and $28,830 for the SR FWD, with a destination charge displayed separately. These are manufacturer-listed starting figures, not guaranteed local prices or out-the-door totals; confirm current offers, fees, options and dealer inventory.

A comparable current transaction price for a 2025 Malibu is not established here. Used-car prices depend on the particular car’s mileage, trim, location, condition, title and history. Compare the asking price with the vehicle’s inspection findings and total expected costs rather than treating a used Malibu’s model-year label as a price guide.
