The biggest difference between the C7 and C8 Corvette Stingray is where the engine sits: the C7 is front-engine, while the C8 is mid-engine. The change arrived with an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission in the C8 and a manufacturer-claimed improvement in acceleration. The specifications below are not a perfect year-for-year comparison: the C7 figures come from a 2019 Z51 technical sheet using European-market data, while the C8 figures describe the 2020 launch model and the 2024 U.S. Stingray.
What changed from the C7 to the C8?
Chevrolet moved the Stingray’s engine behind the passenger compartment for the C8. The C7 retained the traditional front-engine layout. Chevrolet said the C8’s mid-engine arrangement optimizes weight distribution for straight-line and track performance; that is the manufacturer’s rationale, not an independent comparison of how the cars handle.
The shift in layout also coincided with a different transmission: the cited C8 uses an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, while the cited 2019 C7 Z51 specification lists an eight-speed automatic with paddle shift.
Engine and power: C8 vs. C7
The figures available here describe different model years and specifications. The C7 data is for a 2019 Stingray Z51 in the market represented by Chevrolet’s technical document, which reports European units. The C8 figures are for the 2020 launch Stingray.

| Specification | 2019 C7 Stingray Z51 | 2020 C8 Stingray |
|---|---|---|
| Engine | LT1 6.2-liter V8, per Chevrolet’s 2019 technical data | Naturally aspirated LT2 6.2-liter V8, per Chevrolet’s 2019 launch release |
| Published output | 343 kW / 466 PS and 630 Nm, as reported in the 2019 document | 490 hp and 465 lb-ft standard; 495 hp and 470 lb-ft with available performance exhaust, as reported at the 2019 launch |
| Transmission | Eight-speed automatic with paddle shift | Eight-speed dual-clutch transmission |
These ratings should not be treated as a direct U.S.-trim comparison: the C7 document’s units and market specification differ from the C8 launch release. The C8’s performance-exhaust rating is an available configuration, not the standard-output figure.
Is the C8 faster than the C7?
Chevrolet’s 2019 launch release said a C8 Stingray equipped with the Z51 package could reach 0–60 mph in fewer than three seconds, nearly a second quicker than the 2019 Stingray. This is Chevrolet’s launch-era manufacturer claim, not a result from an independent back-to-back test or a promise that every C8 trim will achieve that time.

- Brand new box.
- Real rubber tires. Has opening doors.
- Detailed interior, exterior. Made of diecast with some plastic parts.
- Dimensions approximately L-7.5, W-3.5, H-2 inches.
Chevrolet’s 2019 C7 Z51 technical sheet lists 0–100 km/h in 4.2 seconds and a top speed of 180 mph. Those figures use a different acceleration measure and come from a different document and configuration, so they should not be set beside the C8’s 0–60 claim as if they were measured under identical conditions.
Dimensions and luggage space
For the 2024 U.S. C8 Stingray, Chevrolet lists 12.6 cubic feet of combined cargo volume across the front and rear trunks. The 2019 C7 Z51 technical sheet lists 287 liters of trunk volume. Because the documents do not establish a controlled, same-method comparison, the numbers do not prove which generation carries more luggage in equivalent conditions.

Equipment depends on year, trim and package
The C8’s features are not uniform across every Stingray. Chevrolet’s 2024 U.S. specification lists the Z51 package and Magnetic Ride Control as available, and notes that safety and infotainment equipment varies by trim. Check the specification for the exact model year and configuration rather than assuming an item is standard across the C8 range. The cited C7 document covers a 2019 Z51 and cannot establish a complete equipment comparison across all C7 and C8 years.

Which generation suits your use?
- Daily driving or touring: Compare the exact cars’ equipment, condition and cargo needs. The available specifications do not establish that one generation is more comfortable or practical for every driver.
- Track use: The C8’s mid-engine layout and launch-era Z51 acceleration claim are relevant distinctions, but neither source is an independent track test. Confirm the specific car’s package and equipment.
- Buying used, maintaining or collecting: These specifications cannot settle current used prices, reliability, maintenance costs, insurance or owner satisfaction. Those questions need evidence specific to model year, condition and market.
