A BYD Seal Performance became stuck in the sand at Perth’s City Beach after its owner drove onto the beach to take photographs, according to news reports published on 17 June 2024. The incident shows why all-wheel drive does not make a road sedan suitable for soft sand—and why BYD’s towing guidance points owners toward professional help rather than rope- or chain-only recovery.
What happened at City Beach
PerthNow reported that the car was driven onto the beach for photographs and became bogged. The person identified in media reports as the owner said the group tried to move it through the night, later acknowledging they should have called for help once they realised it could not be moved. “We tried to move it all night,” PerthNow quoted the owner as saying. The outlet also quoted the owner: “However, it’s clear that we should have called for assistance as soon as we realized we couldn’t move it.”
7NEWS reported that the Seal was still stuck around midday Sunday after becoming bogged on Saturday. These are accounts of a 2024 incident, not a current event. The reports attribute the explanation to the owner; they do not independently establish the person’s identity or provide a controlled investigation of why the car became stuck.
Which BYD Seal was involved?
PerthNow and CarExpert identified the vehicle as a Seal Performance. BYD Australia’s current Australian-market model page lists the Performance as all-wheel drive (AWD), with 390 kW of power and a kerb weight of 2,185 kg. The page distinguishes it from the rear-wheel-drive Premium and Essential grades. Those specifications apply to the Australian-market grades.

CarExpert reported that the car had 120 mm of ground clearance. That figure is a media report; it is not confirmed on the BYD Australia model page consulted for this article.
Why AWD did not prevent the car getting bogged
AWD describes how engine or motor power can be delivered to the wheels. It does not, by itself, mean a sedan has the ground clearance, tyres, underbody protection or other equipment intended for off-road use or soft-sand driving. Nor does AWD guarantee that a vehicle will keep moving on sand.

The reports establish that the Seal became bogged, but they do not establish a technical cause. It would be speculation to attribute the incident to one factor, such as vehicle weight, or to claim that the car’s AWD system failed. The useful distinction is between a drivetrain label and suitability for the surface and conditions a driver enters.

BYD’s Australian right-hand-drive 2023 Seal owner manual says owners needing a tow should contact an authorised BYD dealer or service provider, a professional towing service, or their roadside-assistance organisation. It says a flatbed is the best option for a faulty vehicle, warns against having another vehicle tow the Seal using only ropes or chains, and says towing with the tow hook is not recommended.
