1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor slow, technical off-roading, the Colorado ZR2 is the stronger factory-equipped choice. The 2022 ZR2 specification combines electronically locking differentials at both axles with Multimatic DSSV dampers and a suspension that is higher and wider than a standard Colorado. Ford’s Ranger FX4 is a genuinely capable trail truck, but its documented package centers on a rear locker, off-road suspension tuning, all-terrain tires, skid protection, terrain modes and Trail Control.
That conclusion applies to the specific North American configurations documented here: a 2022 Colorado ZR2, Ford’s 2019 FX4 package description and the 2020 Ranger order guide. These are not identical model-year test vehicles. On the used market, a well-maintained, correctly equipped FX4 can be a better purchase than a damaged or modified ZR2, so verify the VIN, original build, service history and current condition before comparing prices.

What this comparison covers
Badges alone do not identify a used truck’s exact equipment. The Colorado ZR2 details in this guide come from Chevrolet’s 2022 model-year specification sheet, issued with the 2021 release. The Ranger information comes from Ford’s North American 2019 product guide and the 2020 order guide. A 2019 AutoTrader.ca comparison supplies period observations from the particular Colorado and Ranger it tested, while a later Associated Press/Edmunds comparison is broader and is not a direct FX4-versus-ZR2 test.

| Decision point | Colorado ZR2 | Ranger FX4 | What it means for a used buyer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Factory differential hardware | Electronic lockers at the front and rear on the cited 2022 ZR2 | Rear locking differential in Ford’s cited FX4 description; the 2020 order guide lists the electronic-locking rear differential separately in the order structure | The ZR2 has the clear hardware advantage when an obstacle unloads a front wheel. Confirm the individual FX4’s build sheet. |
| Shock and suspension design | Multimatic DSSV dampers; suspension two inches higher and tracks 3.5 inches wider than a standard Colorado | Off-road-tuned suspension; exact shock specification is not established by the cited Ford material | Inspect dampers, bushings and alignment rather than assuming a package badge means the parts are healthy. |
| Underbody and tires | ZR2-specific trail equipment; the cited sheet also describes an available Bison Edition with additional skid protection | All-terrain tires, steel front bash plate and skid plates in the 2019 FX4 description | Look for bent, missing or replaced protection and check whether tire size or type was changed. |
| Driver aids | Locking differentials and ZR2 trail hardware | Four Terrain Management modes and Trail Control in the cited 2019 package description | Operate every mode and look for warning messages during a drive. |
| Ground clearance evidence | ZR2 has a raised suspension relative to a standard Colorado | The 2019 comparison reported equal ground clearance for its tested Colorado and Ranger examples | That test observation is limited to those vehicles; measure or inspect the candidate truck instead of generalizing it. |
Why the differential difference matters on a trail
Front and rear locking on the ZR2
An open differential can send torque to the wheel with the least resistance. When a front tire lifts on a ledge or loses grip in a cross-axle rut, that behavior can stop forward progress even when the other tire has traction. A selectable locker forces both wheels on an axle to turn together, subject to the system’s operating limits.
The cited 2022 ZR2 sheet lists electronic lockers on both axles. The front unit is the important distinction: it can help the truck pull itself over an obstacle when the front suspension is articulated. Lockers still require sensible use. Engage them according to the owner’s manual, normally at low speed and on loose surfaces, and disengage them where tight turns on high-grip ground could create driveline wind-up.
What the FX4 package provides
Ford’s 2019 North American product guide describes the FX4 package with a rear locking differential. A rear locker is valuable for climbs, ruts and loose exits, and the package adds electronic terrain management and Trail Control to help meter power. The 2020 order guide, however, shows FX4 as 4×4-only and lists the electronic-locking rear differential as optional equipment in the ordering structure. That apparent variation is why a used buyer should verify the original window sticker, VIN build record or axle equipment instead of relying on an FX4 emblem.
How to check locker operation
- Read the truck’s owner’s manual for the exact engagement conditions and indicator behavior.
- On a safe, loose surface, select the appropriate four-wheel-drive range and locker mode while stationary or moving only as the manual permits.
- Confirm that the dash indicator changes to the requested state and that no drivetrain warning appears.
- Have a qualified technician diagnose any flashing light, refusal to engage, grinding or persistent warning before buying.
Suspension, damping and protection
ZR2 hardware
Chevrolet’s 2022 sheet describes the ZR2 suspension as two inches higher than a standard Colorado and the front and rear tracks as 3.5 inches wider. Multimatic DSSV dampers are the signature component. Their specialized valving is intended to control body motion over repeated bumps while preserving wheel travel on rough terrain. The same sheet identifies ZR2-specific trail equipment and an available Bison Edition with additional skid protection.

On a used example, look beyond the brand name on the damper. Check for oil residue, dents in the damper bodies, torn boots, cracked mounts, uneven ride height and tire wear that points to an alignment problem. A truck that has been used on rocks can have bent links or a pushed-back crossmember even when the shocks do not visibly leak.
FX4 hardware
Ford’s 2019 description lists an off-road-tuned suspension, all-terrain tires, a steel front bash plate and skid plates. Those parts make the Ranger more prepared than a standard 4×4, but the package is still an equipment bundle rather than a separate model with one universal specification. Confirm which plates are present, whether they are original, and whether previous owners removed them for service.
Ground clearance is not the whole story
The period AutoTrader.ca comparison reported equal ground clearance for the particular Colorado and Ranger it tested. Clearance at the lowest differential, approach and departure angles, wheelbase, tire diameter and suspension articulation can matter more than a single published number. A modified truck may sit higher yet have less usable travel or poorer driveshaft angles. Inspect the underside and ask for photographs or repair invoices if the current setup differs from stock.

The 1,350-pound payload and 5,000-pound trailering figures are published maxima for the cited ZR2 specification. Chevrolet warns that ratings depend on configuration and load. Passengers, luggage, bed cargo, accessories, a winch and recovery gear all consume payload. Read the door-jamb payload label and owner’s manual for the exact truck, and check the receiver, wiring and brake controller before towing.
How to identify the correct used truck
Start with the VIN and original build
- Record the VIN, model year, cab and bed configuration, engine and drivetrain from the vehicle and title.
- Obtain the original window sticker or a manufacturer build record. Confirm that the truck was built as a ZR2 or with the FX4 package, rather than receiving badges or aftermarket graphics later.
- For a Ranger, verify 4×4 equipment and whether the electronic-locking rear differential was actually installed. The 2020 guide identifies FX4 as 4×4-only, but individual option content can vary by year and build.
- For a Colorado, confirm the engine, transmission and ZR2-specific equipment. Do not assume a later Colorado generation shares the 2022 ratings or hardware.
Compare like with like
Adjust asking prices only after matching year, mileage, drivetrain, engine, cab, service records, tire condition and modifications. A diesel ZR2, a V6 ZR2 and a Ranger with dealer-installed accessories are not interchangeable listings. No current used-market price, reliability or depreciation dataset is established by the cited material, so a numerical value winner would be speculation.
Inspection checklist for an off-road truck
Drivetrain and controls
- Engage two-wheel drive, four-high and four-low according to the manual. Listen for clunks, binding or delayed engagement.
- Test each available locker on an appropriate loose surface and verify the indicator. A road test alone may not reveal a locker that never engages.
- Scan for four-wheel-drive, ABS and stability-control faults. Do not accept a warning light as a minor issue without a diagnosis.
- Inspect differential and transfer-case housings for impact marks, seepage and fresh sealant that could indicate a repair.
Frame, body and underbody
- Use a lift when possible. Check frame rails, crossmembers, suspension mounts and recovery points for dents, cracks, weld repairs or corrosion.
- Inspect every skid plate and bash plate for deep bends. A plate can protect the component while still transferring a damaging impact to its mounts.
- Look for mismatched fasteners, missing shields and holes from removed accessories.
Suspension, steering and tires
- Check damper bodies for leaks and dents, then compare ride height side to side.
- Examine ball joints, tie rods, control-arm bushings, wheel bearings and steering rack boots for play or damage.
- Measure tread depth and inspect for cupping, scalloping or inner-edge wear. Confirm that all four tires match in size and closely in circumference.
- Ask whether a lift, wheel spacer, oversized tire or re-gearing was installed. Obtain part records and verify that alignment and clearance remain safe.
Cabin, electronics and records
- Operate Terrain Management modes, Trail Control, locker switches, hill-descent features and all four-wheel-drive indicators.
- Review oil, transmission, differential and transfer-case service records, plus evidence of water crossings or flood exposure.
- Have an independent mechanic inspect the truck before money changes hands. The available evidence does not establish either model as categorically more reliable.
Recall status
Use the VIN in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recall lookup and confirm that every required remedy was completed. Chevrolet’s current Colorado model page directs owners and shoppers to that vehicle-specific check. A recall search is not a substitute for a mechanical inspection: it will not reveal undocumented trail damage or neglected maintenance.

Which truck fits each kind of use?
Technical rock and ledge work
Choose the ZR2 when the route regularly includes cross-axle articulation, steep ledges or slow climbs where a front tire may unload. The two-axle locking setup and specialized dampers address those conditions directly. Inspect the lockers and suspension carefully because the same capability can attract hard use.

Mixed forest roads and recreational trails
An FX4 can be the sensible choice when trails are mostly dirt, gravel, mud and moderate ruts. Its rear locker, protection, all-terrain tires, selectable terrain modes and Trail Control provide meaningful factory assistance without requiring the ZR2’s specialized equipment. Condition, tire quality and documented maintenance should decide between otherwise similar examples.
Daily driving with occasional trail use
Neither badge guarantees comfort, economy or low running costs after years of use. Compare tire noise, ride quality, alignment, accessory weight and the condition of shocks and bushings on the actual trucks. A stock, straight FX4 may be easier to live with than a lifted ZR2 carrying heavy armor; conversely, a carefully maintained ZR2 may be the better all-rounder than a neglected Ranger.
Frequent towing or heavy payloads
Use the vehicle-specific labels and manuals, not a brochure maximum. The cited ZR2 figures are configuration-dependent, and no matched FX4 towing or payload figure is established here. Include passengers, fuel, tongue weight, bed cargo, tools and recovery equipment in the calculation.

Using a model maximum as the door-sticker rating
A published maximum is not permission to load every truck to that number. The label on the truck and the owner’s manual account for its axle ratio, cab, options and certified weight.
Equating lift height with off-road capability
Aftermarket lifts can reduce suspension travel, alter driveshaft angles and create tire interference. Check geometry, alignment and fastener quality instead of rewarding a tall stance.
Skipping an underbody inspection
Scratches are normal; crushed crossmembers, leaking housings and bent steering parts are not. Put the truck on a lift and document damage before negotiating.

Decision framework
| If your priority is… | Lean toward… | Verify before purchase |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum factory traction on technical obstacles | Colorado ZR2 | Front and rear locker operation, damper condition and evidence of impact damage |
| Moderate trails with useful factory controls | Ranger FX4 can be sufficient | 4×4 configuration, rear-locker equipment, skid plates and Trail Control operation |
| Lowest-risk used purchase | Whichever candidate is straighter and better documented | VIN/build record, independent inspection, maintenance and recall completion |
| Known towing or payload requirement | Neither by badge alone | Door-jamb label, owner’s manual, receiver hardware and actual loaded weights |
Verdict
The Colorado ZR2 wins the hardware argument for technical off-roading because its documented 2022 configuration brings a front locker in addition to the rear locker, plus DSSV dampers and a raised, wider-track suspension. The Ranger FX4 remains a credible used trail truck with a rear locker, protection, all-terrain tires, terrain modes and Trail Control. Pick the ZR2 for repeated, slow articulation and obstacle work; pick an FX4 when the trails are less extreme or when a particular Ranger offers better condition, records and value. In either case, buy the verified truck in front of you, not the trim badge.
