On 12 November 2025, a Chery Fengyun X3L—also called the Fulwin X3L in some English-language coverage—slid backward during a challenge on Tianmen Mountain’s Stairway to Heaven in Zhangjiajie, China, and damaged part of a guardrail. Chery’s next-day apology offered a preliminary explanation involving a detached safety-rope shackle and a rope caught at the SUV’s right wheel; the company said no one was injured and the natural environment was not damaged.
What happened on the Stairway to Heaven?
The incident took place around noon on 12 November at Tianmen Mountain Scenic Area in Zhangjiajie, Hunan. The Fengyun X3L was attempting a challenge on the landmark’s 999-step stone staircase, which leads to Tianmen Cave. During the attempt, the SUV slid backward and struck a section of guardrail. City News Service / Shanghai Daily and CarNewsChina reported the incident on 13 November.
The challenge was part of a commercial shoot, according to Marketing-Interactive. The setting was a scenic public place, a choice Chery itself recognized as a source of public concern in its apology.
Why did the Chery SUV slide backward?
Chery’s preliminary investigation, described in its 13 November apology, said a shackle at the safety rope’s anchor point detached. The rope then caught the vehicle’s right wheel and obstructed power output, after which the SUV slid backward. The company acknowledged inadequate risk assessment and oversights in execution and attention to detail. Beijing Daily published Chery’s apology.
