Chery says an engine unveiled in 2025 achieves 48% thermal efficiency, but the figure is a company claim—not an independently verified fuel-economy result for a production car. The announcement links the engine to hybrid technology and forecasts “1-liter fuel consumption,” without publishing the test conditions or vehicle data needed to translate the engine figure into real-world consumption.
What Chery has claimed
At its Global Innovation Conference in Wuhu, China, on October 18, 2025, Chery presented what it called a latest-generation engine and said it achieves 48% thermal efficiency. Chery’s announcement, published November 12, 2025, did not give the engine a model name or code. It described the figure as a milestone for hybrid efficiency and said the development was expected to propel hybrid vehicles into an era of “1-liter fuel consumption.” The announcement does not explain how that projection was measured. Chery International’s conference announcement is the primary source for these statements.
A later Chery Auto corporate filing dated April 2, 2026, associates the same 48% figure with the Kunpeng Sky Optimus engine. That company filing offers a name for the technology Chery associates with the headline figure, but it is not independent confirmation. The available filing extract does not provide a test protocol. The Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing filing should therefore be read as company reporting, not as a third-party test result.
What 48% thermal efficiency means—and what it does not
Thermal efficiency describes how much of the fuel’s energy an engine converts into useful work under the conditions of a measurement. It is an engine metric, not a direct statement of how much fuel a complete car will use on a trip. A hybrid’s consumption also depends on the vehicle, its operating strategy and the conditions of the drive.

Chery has not published the measurement details needed to turn this 48% claim into a road-fuel-economy estimate. The announcement does not establish whether 48% is a peak, maximum or another efficiency measure, nor does it state the engine’s operating point, fuel, calibration, test cycle or laboratory. It also does not establish whether the engine is a prototype or production-ready, or whether an independent party has validated the result. Consequently, the figure alone cannot support a prediction of a particular owner’s fuel savings.
How Chery’s other engine figures compare
Chery has reported several thermal-efficiency figures for different engines. They provide context for the company’s claims, but the engines are not established as directly comparable: identities, test methods and conditions differ or are not fully stated.

| Figure | Engine and source context | What is established about the measurement |
|---|---|---|
| 48% | Unnamed latest-generation engine announced by Chery International in 2025; Chery Auto’s April 2026 filing associates 48% with the Kunpeng Sky Optimus engine. | The available 48% materials do not state the test protocol or conditions. Both are company claims. |
| 44.5% | Chery International’s January 2025 article reports this for its fifth-generation 1.5GDI dedicated hybrid engine. | The cited article does not establish that its test conditions match those behind the 48% claim. |
| 41% maximum effective thermal efficiency | Chery Group’s undated technology page reports this for a 1.6TGDI hybrid engine. | The page describes the figure as proven by a thermodynamic development test, but the cited material does not provide a full protocol. |
| 37.1% | Chery Group’s undated technology page reports this for a third-generation ACTECO 1.6TGDI engine. | The cited material does not provide a full test protocol. |
These are not a like-for-like time series. The 48% announcement initially leaves the engine unnamed, and even the later filing’s Kunpeng Sky Optimus identification does not supply enough test detail to establish that it was measured on the same basis as the 44.5%, 41% or 37.1% engines. Chery’s January 2025 engine technology article gives the 44.5% figure; its Core Technologies of Automobile page gives the older figures.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the “1-liter” projection is not a fuel-economy result
Chery’s “1-liter fuel consumption” language is a projection about hybrid vehicles, not a published test result for a specified car with the claimed engine. The conference announcement provides no vehicle, test cycle, distance basis or other measurement details to clarify the phrase. It should not be read as a promise that a Chery hybrid will consume one liter per 100 kilometers.

Chery separately advertises 1.4 L/100 km fuel consumption and 1,400 km combined range for the TIGGO 9 CSH on its current CSH technology page, accessed October 8, 2026. Those are vehicle-level company claims; the cited page does not establish that they result from the unnamed 48% engine. The figures should not be used as evidence validating the engine claim. See Chery’s CSH technology page for its stated TIGGO 9 CSH specifications.

What to take from the announcement
- Chery has publicly claimed 48% thermal efficiency for a latest-generation engine and later associated that figure with the Kunpeng Sky Optimus engine.
- The claim is relevant as a reported engine-efficiency milestone, but the sources do not establish independent validation or disclose the test conditions needed to assess it fully.
- The 48% figure cannot, by itself, tell a buyer how much fuel a particular hybrid will use. A vehicle-specific consumption test and its conditions are needed for that comparison.
