In an August 9, 2025 report about Hong Kong, Interesting Engineering listed BYD’s Atto 2 at $21,700 and Tesla’s entry Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive at about $31,700. On those reported prices, the Atto 2 was about 30% cheaper—but the figures do not establish a like-for-like or current price comparison.
What did the Hong Kong price comparison show?
Interesting Engineering’s August 9, 2025 report described BYD’s Atto 2 as an entry-level electric vehicle aimed at first-time buyers. It listed a base price of $21,700 for the Atto 2 and about $31,700 for Tesla’s entry Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive. The report characterized the BYD as about 30% cheaper. The two listed figures imply a difference of about $10,000, with the Atto 2 price roughly 31.5% below the Tesla figure.
These are the report’s Hong Kong price figures, not verified current prices. The available information does not establish whether the vehicles’ taxes, incentives, purchase conditions, or trim equipment were equivalent. Nor does it confirm current local availability. Is the Atto 2 a direct alternative to a Model 3?
The reported prices compare a BYD Atto 2 base variant with Tesla’s entry Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive, but they do not establish that the vehicles are equivalent in size, equipment, range, or intended use. Before treating the price gap as a buying decision, compare the exact local trims and the full amount payable for each.

- Same market and purchase date: Use prices offered in the same location and period.
- Like-for-like specification: Check trim, included equipment, and any options needed to make the vehicles comparable.
- Same price basis: Confirm taxes, incentives, fees, and purchase conditions rather than comparing headline figures alone.
- Practical fit: Consider body style, passenger and cargo needs, range under relevant driving conditions, and charging access.
- Ownership support: Compare local warranty and service coverage, as well as expected ownership costs.
The reported comparison does not answer these questions for current Hong Kong vehicles, so it cannot determine which is the better first EV.
What range and charging claims were reported?
The same article described the Atto 2 as offering up to 254 miles of range and taking 38 minutes to charge from 10% to 80%. Those are claims in the August 2025 report; they have not been independently confirmed here against a current Hong Kong BYD specification sheet. The report’s figures alone do not specify the testing basis or charging conditions, so check the local vehicle specifications before relying on them for a purchase decision. Why does the price depend so much on the market?
EV affordability is not portable from one country to another. The International Energy Agency’s Global EV Outlook 2025 reports that, in 2024, about 40% of available battery-electric vehicle models in China cost less than USD 25,000. In Europe, around 3% of available BEV models were below EUR 25,000; in the United States, only two BEV models were below USD 30,000. These figures describe the availability of models in those markets and price bands—not the price of the Atto 2 in Hong Kong. IEA, Global EV Outlook 2025
The IEA also reports that China’s median BEV purchase price was around USD 24,000 in 2024, and that nearly 95% of small-car sales there were electric. Yet small cars accounted for less than 10% of China’s sales. The IEA attributes affordability differences to factors including market maturity, competition, automaker pricing, and costs beyond battery packs. This is useful context for why an entry-price model may matter in one market, but it does not verify a Hong Kong price or make China-market prices interchangeable with it. IEA, Global EV Outlook 2025

Which BYD name and prices apply?
The Hong Kong report calls the vehicle Atto 2 and notes that it is known as Yuan Up in China. Names, trims, specifications, and prices can vary by market. BYD’s 2025 China announcement listed presale prices of RMB 270,000–350,000 for the Han L EV and RMB 280,000–360,000 for the Tang L EV. The reported lower entry price makes the Atto 2 relevant to first-time buyers considering an EV, but the price story alone is not enough to recommend it over a Model 3—or to establish what either costs now in Hong Kong. A useful decision starts with local, current quotes and the buyer’s charging setup, driving needs, and service options. The figures reported in August 2025 are a starting point for the comparison, not a substitute for those checks.
