Cheaper EVs Are Helping Fuel Europe’s Electric-Car Boom

Europe’s EV sales rose sharply in 2025 as more affordable models and narrower price premiums helped, alongside policy and automaker strategy.

Yes—electric cars are becoming more affordable in Europe, and that has helped sales climb. But lower prices are only part of the story: policy, model availability and automaker strategy also contributed, and a new EV still costs more than a comparable combustion car in many cases.

Europe’s electric-car market grew strongly in 2025

The International Energy Agency (IEA) reports 4.2 million electric-car sales across Europe in 2025, around 30% more than in 2024. Its broader European figure includes battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs). In the EU alone, the IEA counted almost 3 million electric-car sales, just under 27% of the market. IEA, Global EV Outlook 2026

A narrower EU measure comes from the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA): 1,880,370 new BEVs were registered in the EU in 2025, equal to 17.4% of new-car registrations, up from 13.6% in 2024. These figures are not contradictory: the IEA’s electric-car category includes PHEVs and covers Europe more broadly, while ACEA’s figure counts EU BEV registrations. ACEA, 27 January 2026

Growth continued in the first half of 2026. ACEA recorded 1,220,890 new BEVs in the EU from January through June, a 20.7% share of new registrations, compared with 15.6% in the first half of 2025. ACEA, 23 July 2026

Are electric cars getting cheaper in Europe?

Compared with combustion-engine cars, the average price gap narrowed in 2025, but it has not disappeared. The IEA estimates that BEVs carried an average price premium of around 20% over internal-combustion-engine (ICE) cars across segments. More than 30% of BEVs sold were priced below the average ICE equivalent, up from about 15% in 2021. These are market-wide averages, not a promise that a particular EV is cheaper than a similar petrol or diesel model in every country or trim.

Prices vary substantially by vehicle type. In 2025, medium-sized BEVs averaged a 15% premium over medium ICE models. BEV SUVs averaged around a 10% premium, down from about 20% in 2024. In Germany, the premium for small BEVs was around 20% in 2025; the IEA says it had been 50% at some point between 2021 and 2025. IEA, Global EV Outlook 2026

What made EVs more affordable?

More models and trims

A broader choice gives buyers more ways to find an EV at a lower price point. The IEA points to the Renault 5 E-Tech and Hyundai Inster, as well as standard trims of the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y and new Chinese models, as part of the changing offer in 2025. It also identifies smaller cars such as the Fiat 500, Renault 5 E-Tech, Leapmotor T03 and BYD Dolphin as contributors to renewed electric-car sales growth in Europe’s small-car segment. That segment still accounted for less than 15% of the market in 2025 and remained below its share three years earlier.

Lower battery costs and automaker pricing

Battery prices and automaker pricing strategies also contributed to improved affordability, according to the IEA. In Germany and the UK, changes in the range of models and trims explained about one-third of the year-on-year price decline. This is a reminder that an average price can change when manufacturers add lower-priced versions, even if individual models do not all receive a price cut.

Vehicle size can push averages back up

The shift toward larger and heavier vehicles offset some of the price improvement. The IEA estimates that without the move toward larger models since 2021, average retail BEV prices in 2025 would have been roughly 20% lower in Germany and more than 5% lower in the UK. Cheaper options exist, but the mix of vehicles buyers choose affects what the market average looks like.

Why lower prices did not explain the whole sales boom

Affordability remained the most commonly cited barrier to wider adoption. The IEA reports that a 2025 survey of 3,000 EU citizens found fewer than 10% of available BEV models in Europe were priced below €30,000, while respondents’ median willingness to pay was around €20,000. The IEA cites the survey; these figures describe its reported results, not the proportion of all EV buyers who purchased at those prices.

Policy also mattered. The IEA says the EU’s 2025 CO₂ standards, which targeted a 15% reduction from 2021 levels, contributed to the increase in electric-car sales and encouraged automakers to introduce more affordable models. ACEA described demand in the first half of 2026 as driven primarily by market support measures. Neither source attributes the sales increase to price alone.

Growth reached most EU countries, but not all at the same pace

The IEA says 24 of the EU’s 27 member states increased their electric-car sales share in 2025, compared with 13 countries in 2024. In the first half of 2026, ACEA reported BEV registration growth of 62.9% in France and 48% in Germany, among the largest EU markets. Country results can differ with incentives, taxes, model availability and the mix of cars sold.

How to judge whether an EV is a good-value buy

A headline starting price is not enough to establish that an EV is cheaper to buy or better value. Compare the specific vehicle, equipment and market rather than assuming that one Europe-wide price applies.

  • Compare like with like: Match an EV with a similarly sized petrol or diesel car, and check the price of the comparable model in your country.
  • Check the trim and equipment: Entry trims can lower a model’s advertised price, but may differ in range, comfort or standard features from the versions most buyers consider.
  • Account for local incentives and taxes: Purchase support and tax treatment vary by country and may change over time.
  • Confirm availability: A model or low-priced trim may not be on sale in your market, or may have limited availability.
  • Match the car to your use: A small city car and a larger family SUV serve different needs, so a lower sticker price alone is not a like-for-like comparison.

Europe’s EV market is growing as more comparatively affordable models reach buyers, but the price gap with combustion cars remains real and varies by segment. The figures point to progress—not universal price parity—and show that regulation, incentives and the range of available cars have helped alongside falling costs.
