The most realistic under-$5 car hose purchase is short washer/vacuum tubing for a windshield-washer line, headlight-washer circuit, engine vacuum accessory, or certain overflow and vent applications. A Duallane Truck Parts listing observed at $1.95 for a 7/32-inch, 6-foot Gates 27043 TEMP shows that price is possible, but it is a retailer- and date-specific observation—not proof that every automotive hose, or the same part today, costs less than $5.
“Car hose” is not one universal product. Before ordering, identify the fluid or air service, measure the original hose’s inside diameter, check the required length, and verify pressure and temperature limits. Washer/vacuum tubing is not a safe substitute for fuel or oil hose.

What you can realistically buy for less than $5
Low-cost automotive tubing is most useful when the original line carries windshield-washer fluid, vacuum, or another low-pressure, non-fuel service. Gates describes its washer/vacuum hose for washer lines and engine vacuum lines, with additional uses that can include overflow or vent tubing and pressure-sensor connections. NAPA describes the same general category for windshield and headlight washers, vacuum-operated accessories, and overflow or rainwater discharge.

The documented low-price example
A surfaced Duallane Truck Parts listing showed Gates 27043 TEMP, 7/32-inch inside diameter and 6 feet long, at $1.95. The figure was a search-time retailer observation accessed in 2026; it was not an Amazon price guarantee, a nationwide average, or a promise of current stock. Check the item price, shipping, tax, and availability at checkout.
Why “under $5” needs a qualification
Automotive hose prices change by retailer, seller, shipping method, region, and inventory. The $1.95 observation applies only to that listed Gates 27043 TEMP configuration. Other diameters, materials, hose assemblies, and application-specific products can cost more. Treat the price as a lead for a possible budget purchase, not as a specification.
First identify the hose’s job
Application determines whether a cheap tube is appropriate. Read the vehicle service information and inspect where both ends of the existing line connect before choosing a replacement.
Windshield and headlight washer lines
Washer tubing carries fluid from a reservoir or pump to spray nozzles. It is typically a small inside diameter and operates at relatively low pressure. NAPA’s description specifically includes windshield and headlight washer use. Confirm that the replacement slips securely over the original barbs or joins the existing connector without kinking.
Engine vacuum and accessory lines
Gates lists washer/vacuum hose for engine vacuum lines and vacuum-operated accessories. Vacuum routing can affect controls, sensors, and actuators, so replace one section at a time and preserve the original routing. A tube that looks similar but has the wrong inside diameter can leak air or fail to grip a fitting.

Overflow, vent, rainwater, and pressure-sensor tubing
Some washer/vacuum products are also listed for overflow or vent duties, rainwater discharge, or pressure-sensor connections. Use those descriptions only when they match the vehicle’s actual service. A vent or drain line may tolerate conditions that a pressurized fluid line does not, and a pressure-sensor connection still requires the correct bore and secure seal.
Fuel, oil, and other excluded services
Do not install Gates washer/vacuum hose on a fuel or oil circuit. Amazon Hose catalogs a separate cloth push-on hose for low-pressure air, diesel, oil, and water; that catalog also excludes LPG, propane, and natural gas. “Fuel hose” itself is not a universal specification, so check the exact fluid, pressure, temperature, construction, and approval required by the vehicle manufacturer.

The Gates pressure and temperature figures belong to the named GATR products, not to every hose sold as washer or vacuum tubing. The NAPA and Duallane entries establish dimensions and use in the cited listings but do not establish equivalent pressure or temperature ratings.
How to choose the correct size
Measure inside diameter, not just the outside
Inside diameter (ID) controls how the hose seals on a nipple or connector. Remove a short piece of the old line if possible and measure the hole with a caliper or an appropriately sized gauge. If the hose is brittle, cut the end square so the measurement is not distorted by a stretched or crushed opening.
The documented sizes are not interchangeable by name alone: 3 mm is about 0.118 inch, 4 mm is about 0.157 inch, 5/32 inch is about 0.156 inch, and 7/32 inch is about 0.219 inch. The near match between 4 mm and 5/32 inch can still require a fit check because actual hose tolerances and connector dimensions vary. The larger 7/32-inch bore should not be forced onto a fitting intended for a much smaller tube.

Check the connector and wall fit
A replacement should seat fully on the barb, remain flexible enough to follow the original bend, and resist pulling off by hand. If it is loose, a clamp may not correct a fundamentally wrong diameter; if it is too tight, forcing it can split the hose or damage a plastic nipple. Reuse a connector only if it is undamaged and compatible with the replacement’s bore.

The examples in the table are six-foot lengths. Compare that length with the section you need, then allow a small amount for clean, square cuts and routing. Avoid excessive slack near belts, fans, exhaust components, steering joints, hinges, and sharp edges. Do not stretch tubing to make a short piece reach.
Verify ratings before installation
For Gates 27037 and 27038, the documented working-pressure rating is 25 psi and the operating range is -40°F to +257°F. Both are identified as SAE J1037 tested. Those numbers are useful only when your part number is actually one of those products and the service matches its intended use.
- Pressure: compare the circuit’s required pressure with the hose’s working-pressure rating; never treat a vacuum-tube label as approval for a higher-pressure system.
- Temperature: consider cold starts, engine-bay heat, and fluid temperature. The Gates range applies to the cited GATR products, not automatically to NAPA NBH H452 or the 27043 TEMP listing.
- Fluid compatibility: washer fluid, air, diesel, oil, water, LPG, propane, and natural gas require different compatibility decisions. Follow the product label and vehicle service information.
- Construction: a cloth-reinforced push-on fuel/oil hose is a different construction from small washer/vacuum tubing. Do not substitute based on an attractive price or similar diameter.
Step-by-step replacement procedure
- Locate the complete circuit. Trace the line from the reservoir, pump, vacuum source, sensor, actuator, nozzle, or drain to the other connection. Photograph the routing before disconnecting anything.

- Depressurize and clean. Turn off the vehicle, allow hot components to cool, and release any stored pressure according to the service instructions. Wipe dirt away from the connection so debris does not enter the line.
- Cut the replacement square. Use a sharp hose cutter or blade. A diagonal or crushed cut can create a leak and make the hose appear too short.
- Route it like the original. Keep the hose away from heat, moving parts, and abrasion. Preserve bends and clips; do not introduce a tight kink.
- Seat both ends. Push the tube fully over each compatible barb or connector. Add a suitable clamp only when the vehicle design and hose size call for one; a clamp cannot make an incorrectly sized hose safe.
- Test the circuit. Operate the washer pump or vacuum-controlled function while observing the connections. Look and listen for drips, air leaks, collapse, rubbing, or a hose that walks off the fitting.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
Buying by the phrase “car hose”
Search results often mix washer tubing, vacuum tubing, fuel hose, coolant hose, and generic air line. Filter by the actual application first. If the listing does not state intended use, ID, length, and relevant ratings, it is not sufficiently identified for a critical repair.
Confusing inside diameter with outside diameter
A seller may display several dimensions. Compare ID to the fitting and the old hose’s bore. Outside diameter matters for clearance and clamps, but it does not tell you whether the tube will seal on the nipple.

Assuming similar numbers mean the same fit
Four millimeters and 5/32 inch are close nominal sizes, yet manufacturing tolerance, wall thickness, connector shape, and material can change the result. Test the fit on the actual connector before routing the line through the vehicle.
Using washer/vacuum hose for fuel or oil
This is the most serious category error. Gates’ cited washer/vacuum hose explicitly excludes fuel and oil. Remove it and install a product whose documentation names the exact fluid and pressure service instead.
Trusting an old catalog without checking current specifications

Cheap tubing is sensible for a short, clearly identified washer or vacuum repair when the dimensions and ratings match. It is false economy when a failure could release fuel, oil, coolant, or high-pressure fluid, disable a safety-related system, or require repeated roadside repairs. In those cases, buy the exact application-rated hose and replace damaged connectors or clamps at the same time.
