The January 5 press conference was Sony Honda Mobility’s first independent CES presentation, and its subject was AFEELA: an electric-car program built around software, artificial intelligence, cloud services, and in-car entertainment.
SHM presented the pre-production AFEELA 1 and unveiled the AFEELA Prototype 2026, with plans for California deliveries in 2026 and a possible U.S. production model as early as 2028. Those plans are no longer current. SHM announced in March 2026 that it would discontinue development and launch of AFEELA 1 and its second AFEELA model. In April, Sony, Honda, and SHM said they would scale down the joint venture while continuing to discuss possible software-focused collaboration.

This was an SHM presentation, not a normal Sony product keynote
The shorthand headline “Sony’s keynote” is understandable, but it is not quite accurate. The event held on January 5, 2026, before CES opened to the public, was a press conference from Sony Honda Mobility—usually abbreviated to SHM—the joint venture created by Sony and Honda to develop a new kind of electric mobility business.

SHM’s stated theme was “Mobility as a Creative Entertainment Space.” The company used the AFEELA vehicles to demonstrate its argument that a car could become a software-driven environment for transportation, communication, gaming, music, video, and other digital services.

CES’s public exhibition ran from January 6 through January 9, 2026, but the key SHM announcements came during the preceding press conference.
What SHM showed at CES 2026
There were two principal vehicle announcements.
| Vehicle | What SHM said in January | What happened afterward |
|---|---|---|
| AFEELA 1 | A pre-production electric vehicle, with California deliveries scheduled to begin during 2026. | SHM later announced that development and launch would be discontinued. |
| AFEELA Prototype 2026 | A world-premiered prototype described as the basis for a possible U.S. production model as early as 2028. | That future production plan was also overtaken by SHM’s decision to discontinue its second AFEELA model. |
The important editorial distinction is between an announcement and a delivered product. CES showed SHM’s intended direction and prototypes. It did not establish that a retail AFEELA vehicle reached customers, that California deliveries began, or that the proposed 2028 model remained on schedule.
The AFEELA idea: an electric car as a software platform
SHM’s pitch went beyond the familiar electric-car selling points of range, charging, acceleration, or battery size. The company emphasized the vehicle’s digital environment and the services that could run inside it.
The presentation discussed an evolving vehicle operating environment, AI-assisted driving, conversational AI, cloud computing, and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Digital Chassis. Together, those technologies were intended to support a vehicle that could receive new software capabilities and services over time rather than remaining fixed after it left the factory.
That approach places AFEELA closer to a connected computing platform than to a conventional car-development program. The promise was attractive but also difficult: the vehicle would depend not only on automotive engineering, but on reliable software, cloud infrastructure, interfaces, content licensing, cybersecurity, updates, and a sustainable developer ecosystem.
AI and the in-car user experience
SHM described AI-assisted driving and conversational AI as parts of the AFEELA experience. In practical terms, the intended vehicle would use software to help interpret driver or passenger requests and connect them with vehicle functions, information, and entertainment.
However, the CES material should not be read as proof that every demonstrated AI feature became a production feature. The company was showing a roadmap and a pre-production concept at an event; it was not documenting a completed, independently tested consumer product.

AFEELA was designed to draw on Sony’s broader entertainment portfolio. SHM’s CES material highlighted panoramic displays, AFEELA Immersive Audio, the RIDEVU streaming service, Crunchyroll, and other cabin-entertainment demonstrations. The larger concept connected the car to Sony’s film, music, gaming, and streaming businesses.

- WORKS WITH EVERY NON-TESLA EV: Standard J1772 connector plugs straight into Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Rivian, Lucid and every other EV or plug-in hybrid sold with a J1772 port - no adapter needed. Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car.
- PLUG IN, NO HARDWIRING: Level 2 charger delivers up to 40A to fully charge most EVs overnight. Plugs into a 240V, 4-prong NEMA 14-50 outlet (the RV/range type - NOT a dryer outlet) on a dedicated 50A circuit. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that you have the right outlet.
- CONTROL & SAVE FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start/stop charging, set speed (6-40A), get reminders, and track energy use and cost. Schedule off-peak overnight charging to cut your electric bill. Requires 2.4 GHz WiFi.
- SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
- GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.
That was the unusual part of Sony’s CES presence. Rather than treating entertainment as a feature on a dashboard screen, SHM presented the cabin itself as a space where passengers could watch, listen, play, and interact with digital content.
PlayStation Remote Play was one of the headline features
Eric Lempel, Sony’s PlayStation executive, discussed how PlayStation could fit into the AFEELA environment. SHM said PS Remote Play would come to the vehicle’s entertainment system and could be used with a DualSense controller. The presentation also showed gaming-franchise integrations, including vehicle-interface themes or “skins.”
The proposed experience was not the same as putting a full PlayStation 5 inside the car. PlayStation Remote Play streams gameplay from a compatible PS4 or PS5 console to another supported device. Sony’s Remote Play documentation confirms that DualSense controllers work with compatible Remote Play setups, while also making clear that a PS4 or PS5 console is required for streaming to other devices.
For readers interested in the accessory itself, the PlayStation DualSense Wireless Controller is the relevant controller associated with the announced AFEELA Remote Play demonstration. It is a standard PlayStation accessory—not an AFEELA-branded product—and buying one does not provide access to an AFEELA vehicle or prove that the in-car system shipped.
Important limitation: the CES presentation described a planned or demonstrated vehicle feature. It did not establish that a retail AFEELA customer could use DualSense with a delivered car. The AFEELA program was later discontinued before those vehicle-launch plans were fulfilled.
SHM also wanted outside creators to build for the car
The AFEELA concept was not limited to Sony-owned entertainment. SHM discussed an open creator and developer program for in-vehicle entertainment content. The aim was to let outside creators contribute experiences designed for the cabin and the vehicle’s displays, audio systems, and software environment.
The company also described an on-chain mobility-service platform. That suggested a broader ambition: AFEELA would not only be a car with apps, but part of a digital mobility ecosystem involving services, creators, and potentially new ways to manage transactions or participation.

Those plans raised practical questions that the CES presentation did not answer in full. Developers would need stable technical specifications, access rules, safety constraints, monetization terms, privacy protections, and a meaningful installed user base. With the subsequent scale-down of SHM, the current status of the creator program should be treated as uncertain rather than as an active commercial opportunity.
The March 2026 cancellation changed the story
On March 25, 2026, Sony Honda Mobility announced that it would discontinue development and launch of AFEELA 1 and its second AFEELA model. The announcement followed Honda’s March 12 reassessment of its automobile-electrification strategy.

SHM said Honda’s reassessment changed the assumptions surrounding technologies and assets that Honda had been expected to provide. As a result, the January CES plans for AFEELA 1 deliveries and a later U.S. production model were no longer continuing as announced.
SHM also said California reservation holders would receive full refunds. That is significant because it confirms that the vehicle program should not be described as merely delayed. For current coverage, “cancelled,” “discontinued,” or “development and launch ended” is more accurate than saying AFEELA is still preparing for delivery.
April brought a smaller, less certain Sony-Honda plan
On April 21, 2026, Sony, Honda, and SHM said it would be difficult to bring products and services aligned with SHM’s founding purpose to market in the short to medium term under the existing framework. They agreed to review SHM’s structure and scale down its operations.
The companies did leave open a narrower possibility. They said they would continue discussing potential collaboration aimed at software-driven user experiences for future advanced-driver-assistance environments.
That statement is not a confirmation of a new production AFEELA car. It preserves the possibility that Sony and Honda could work together on software, interfaces, entertainment, or other user-facing technologies connected to future driver-assistance systems. But no new production vehicle was confirmed in the April announcement.
What the CES announcement means now
Viewed in isolation, the CES presentation was a clear statement of SHM’s strategy:
- Use Honda’s automotive expertise and Sony’s software and entertainment capabilities.
- Build an electric vehicle around an upgradeable digital environment.
- Use AI and cloud computing to expand the vehicle’s capabilities.
- Bring PlayStation, video, music, and streaming experiences into the cabin.
- Invite outside creators and developers to build in-car content.
Viewed with the later corporate updates, it is best understood as a high-profile demonstration of a strategy that did not reach commercial launch. The technology themes may continue to influence future Sony-Honda discussions, particularly around software-driven experiences and advanced driver assistance, but the AFEELA 1 and second-model plans are not current product roadmaps.

The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway.
- HARDWIRED - PROFESSIONAL INSTALL: This Level 2 charger is hardwired (not plug-in), so a licensed electrician installs it per National Electrical Code. It delivers up to 48A on a dedicated 60A, 240V circuit - enough to charge most EVs fully overnight. Want more speed? You can set DIP switches 4 and 5 to unlock 50A on a dedicated 70A circuit. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that your electrical panel can support the circuit.
- CONTROL FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start and stop charging, set the charging speed (6-48A), get reminders, and track how much energy and money each charge uses. Requires a 2.4 GHz home WiFi network.
- AFEELA 1 California deliveries in 2026: announced in January, later discontinued.
- A possible U.S. production model as early as 2028: presented as a future possibility, later overtaken by the decision to discontinue the second AFEELA model.
- PS Remote Play in the car: presented as part of the AFEELA entertainment experience; no retail AFEELA vehicle was established by the cited material.
- DualSense support: identified as the proposed controller for the Remote Play experience, not an AFEELA-exclusive accessory.
- Creator and developer participation: announced as part of the platform concept; current availability is uncertain after SHM’s operational scale-down.
- Future Sony-Honda software collaboration: still under discussion in the April statement, but without a confirmed new AFEELA production model.
So the accurate headline is not that Sony launched an electric car at CES 2026. It is that Sony Honda Mobility used CES to present an entertainment-first electric-car strategy—and then ended the AFEELA vehicle program a few months later.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: CES 2026 showcased Sony Honda Mobility’s most ambitious idea for AFEELA: an electric vehicle functioning as a connected entertainment and software platform, complete with proposed PlayStation Remote Play, AI, cloud services, and creator tools. But AFEELA 1 and the planned second model were discontinued in March 2026, and SHM was scaled down in April. The CES presentation remains important as a record of Sony and Honda’s strategy—not as evidence of a Sony electric car now available to buy.
