To join Mitchell Freeway southbound near Stirling and Innaloo, use the Stephenson Avenue southbound on-ramp. It is part of the Stephenson Avenue Extension interchange and uses coordinated ramp signals as part of the Smart Freeway system. The Cedric Street southbound on-ramp is being removed as part of the interchange changes.

Which ramp should you use for Mitchell Freeway southbound?

Follow signs for the Stephenson Avenue southbound on-ramp rather than looking for a Cedric Street southbound entry. Main Roads WA identifies the new ramp as the southbound freeway access and says it is integrated with the Smart Freeway system, including coordinated ramp signals. Allow time to follow the signed approach and obey the signals at the ramp.

The change is part of Phase 2 of the Stephenson Avenue Extension, which extends Stephenson Avenue from Flax Way to the Mitchell Freeway and Cedric Street interchange. The project includes a grade-separated interchange, local road links and changes to existing Cedric Street freeway ramps. Phase 1, from Scarborough Beach Road to Flax Way, opened on 11 February 2022. Main Roads WA: Stephenson Avenue Extension

What is changing at the Cedric Street interchange?

The project replaces the previous ramp arrangement with Stephenson Avenue connections to the freeway in both directions. Main Roads’ project scope includes removing the existing Cedric Street southbound on- and off-ramps and the northbound off-ramp. The southbound route change is therefore part of a wider transition: local traffic between Innaloo, Stirling and nearby areas uses Stephenson Avenue as the new connection as the interchange opens.

For local access, Main Roads’ December 2025 FAQ described Ellen Stirling Boulevard access via Oswald Street and explained that freeway traffic would use Stephenson Avenue for local access after the Cedric Street northbound off-ramp closed. Follow current road signs and the authority’s route maps, since the FAQ describes staged arrangements from that period. Main Roads WA: December 2025 access changes FAQ

How the northbound ramp changes differ

The northbound change has its own date and should not be confused with the southbound route. The new Stephenson Avenue northbound on-ramp opened at 7am on Friday 3 April 2026. Main Roads said the interchange was then operational with on- and off-ramps connected in both freeway directions.

Main Roads’ March 2026 FAQ described a temporary closure of the Cedric Street northbound on-ramp from 2 April until mid-2026, with detours via Stephenson Avenue or Karrinyup Road depending on the driver’s approach. That was a time-limited notice, not confirmation that the closure remains in force now. Check current signs and notices before travelling. Main Roads WA: March 2026 northbound ramp FAQ

Stirling Station access and other nearby changes

Access to Stirling Station’s southern car park has also changed. Main Roads reports that a new Cedric Street entry opened on 5 September 2026, while the Stephenson Avenue car park access became left-in, left-out only. If you are driving to the station, use the signed approach appropriate to your direction rather than assuming the old access pattern still applies.

The broader project also upgraded the Stirling Bus Interchange from 18 to 29 stands; Main Roads says it opened to passengers on 2 August 2026. A new Mitchell Freeway Principal Shared Path connection between Civic Place and Telford Crescent is 1.4 km long and four metres wide, according to the project page. Main Roads also cites a forecast of more than 6,000 rail boardings by 2031; that is a prediction, not a current passenger count.

Check for active roadworks before setting out

Construction notices and detours can change. Main Roads lists dated overnight closures and detour maps on its project page, so check the live listing before you travel rather than relying on an old closure notice. At the time the page was reviewed in October 2026, it included dated closures around 5–9 October and intermittent freeway lane closures extending later in 2026; those notices are time-sensitive and may no longer apply.

  • For southbound freeway access, follow signs to Stephenson Avenue southbound on-ramp.
  • For northbound access, use the Stephenson Avenue northbound ramp, which opened on 3 April 2026, and follow current detour signs if works affect your approach.
  • For local roads or Stirling Station, check the current Main Roads map and follow posted access restrictions.

Check Main Roads WA’s Stephenson Avenue Extension updates and detour maps before departure.
