What was the Silver Arrow concept?
Mercedes-Benz designers from Advanced Design Studios in Sindelfingen, Germany, and Carlsbad, California, created the concept for the 2011 Los Angeles Design Challenge. The challenge called for a spectacular new film car for Hollywood. The project was presented as an homage to 125 years of automotive technology and design, according to the contemporary 2011 video page and description.
The names Silver Arrow and Silver Lightning refer here to the same design-concept project. A secondary reference also identifies it as a concept for the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show Design Challenge. Neither name establishes a production model, and the available material does not document a retail launch or production history.
What is the “Silver Lightning” story?
The concept was accompanied by a short-film premise set in a near future where artificial intelligence is prevalent. Two crash-test dummies, Hans05 and Franz02, try to save their Silver Arrow from Dr. Crash-Barrier. The film framing made the vehicle a character in a speculative Hollywood scenario rather than a preview of a documented road car.

What made its design unusual?
A low sculpture with an unconventional roller
The contemporary description characterizes the vehicle as a low sculpture on wheels and highlights a diagonal, hubless roller said to allow steering in all directions. This is a description of the concept’s visual and intended design idea; it does not provide engineering details or establish how such a system would perform in a production vehicle.
Historic proportions, not a full specification
The 2011 description says the proportions recall late-1930s sports cars and the 1950s Uhlenhaut SLR. A secondary reference additionally names the W125 and 300 SLR as inspirations; those are contextual design references, not manufacturer-confirmed technical specifications for Silver Lightning.

Was the Silver Arrow a production car?
