The Triumph 6T Thunderbird was introduced in 1949, while “1950” identifies the model-year bike associated with its early production and later fame. It was a 649cc, overhead-valve British parallel twin developed from the 500cc Speed Twin for riders seeking more performance, particularly in the important American export market.
When was the Triumph 6T Thunderbird introduced?
The 6T arrived in 1949, not for the first time in 1950. The National Motor Museum dates Triumph’s three-bike pre-launch demonstration at the Montlhéry circuit to September 1949. Triumph’s official timeline, meanwhile, identifies Marlon Brando’s motorcycle in The Wild One as a 1950 6T. The distinction is straightforward: the model was introduced in 1949, and 1950 is the model-year designation commonly attached to the early Thunderbird.
Triumph chief designer Edward Turner developed it from the successful 500cc Speed Twin. The National Motor Museum describes the new motorcycle as Triumph’s answer to “an increasing demand for faster and more powerful motorcycles for the important American export market.” In the museum’s account, the larger engine served performance-minded buyers, especially in the United States.
What were the 1950 Thunderbird’s engine and performance specifications?
The 1950 Triumph catalog calls the Thunderbird a 650cc OHV model and gives its actual capacity as 649cc. It lists a 71mm bore, 82mm stroke, 7.6:1 compression ratio, twin carburettors, and a four-speed gearbox. The catalog also describes a vertical twin with overhead-valve gear, an automatic-advance magneto, twin exhausts, and dry-sump lubrication.

The National Motor Museum’s collection entry for a 1949 Thunderbird lists two cylinders, overhead valves, and an output of 34bhp at 6,300rpm. The museum calls the bike a “true 100mph machine.” That is the museum’s description of the model’s performance proposition, not a guarantee that every surviving example—or every individual motorcycle under all conditions—will reach that speed. Its entry also records a demonstration of 500 miles at over 90mph; this is a reported pre-launch demonstration, not a general-purpose owner test figure.
What made the Thunderbird different from the Speed Twin?
The Thunderbird carried the Speed Twin idea into a larger-capacity, export-minded motorcycle. Its 649cc engine was the central step up from the 500cc basis described by the museum. A specialist historic-owner register provides further details about the 6T’s engine and chassis relationship to the Speed Twin in model year 1950, but those specifics should be understood as a secondary account rather than a complete factory specification comparison.
One visible distinction was the headlamp nacelle. The National Motor Museum says the 6T was the first Triumph to place its headlamp in a housing that also contained instruments and switches. Triumph continued using the design feature through the 1950s and 1960s. For a period motorcycle, the nacelle combined distinctive styling with a compact home for the controls and instrumentation.
What did the 1950 Triumph Thunderbird cost?
The National Motor Museum records a new price of £195 for the 1949 vehicle in its collection. That figure belongs to the museum’s 1949 record; it does not establish a universal 1950 retail price or the price in every market. The 1950 catalog supplies period technical specifications, but the evidence available here does not establish a definitive year-specific price across regions.

What motorcycle did Marlon Brando ride in The Wild One?
Triumph’s official timeline says Marlon Brando rode a 650cc 1950 Triumph Thunderbird 6T in the 1953 film The Wild One. That association helped give the early Thunderbird a lasting place in popular culture, alongside its original identity as a faster, larger-capacity development of the Speed Twin.

The period catalog and museum record establish the model’s broad technical identity, but they do not prove that every motorcycle now described as a 1950 Thunderbird retains its original specification. Restoration, market variations, and changes over the bike’s life can affect an individual example. The sources also do not establish 1950 production totals, year-specific frame dimensions, or every country’s exact specification. For identification or restoration work, a period 1950 Triumph parts book can be a useful reference, but confirm that the particular edition covers the model and parts in question.
