There is no universal CATL-versus-BYD winner. BYD’s Blade Battery is an LFP battery and a particular blade-format pack design. CATL is a battery supplier with several product families, including LFP Shenxing products and Qilin packs using either LFP or NMC. A meaningful comparison therefore requires the exact car, battery pack, trim, market and test cycle—not just the supplier name.
Published figures are useful specifications, but they are not a controlled durability or range contest. CATL and BYD quote results for different products and vehicles, while independent evidence does not establish that current CATL-equipped cars or BYD-equipped cars degrade more slowly as a group. Compare complete vehicles using matched conditions, warranty terms and independent tests.

What “CATL versus BYD” actually identifies
BYD Blade is a chemistry-plus-format name
BYD describes Blade Battery as lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry in a long, blade-shaped cell and pack arrangement. BYD’s own product and media material presents the format as a way to use space efficiently and add structural strength. Those pages describe BYD’s design goals and company claims; they do not amount to an independent ranking of every Blade-equipped vehicle.
CATL is a portfolio, not one battery
CATL supplies several battery families. Its published portfolio includes LFP Shenxing products, Qilin packs available in LFP and NMC versions, condensed-matter products, sodium-ion products and hybrid configurations. Saying that “CATL batteries are NMC” or that all CATL packs are LFP is therefore inaccurate. The chemistry and pack must be identified for the particular vehicle.

Why the distinction matters to a buyer
A cell chemistry, a module or cell-to-pack layout, thermal system, software calibration and vehicle body all affect the result a driver experiences. Two cars using cells from the same supplier can have different usable capacity, charging behavior, efficiency and degradation because the automaker chose different hardware and operating limits.
The supplier name may also describe only the cells or a contracted pack. The automaker can integrate those cells with its own battery-management software, cooling plates, crash structure and charge limits. That is why a specification sheet that says only “CATL battery” or “BYD Blade” is an incomplete technical description. Ask for the exact pack family and usable-energy figure.
Chemistry, format and energy density
LFP and NMC are different chemistries, while Blade and Qilin describe particular product or pack designs. Treating those labels as interchangeable creates misleading comparisons.
| Item | What the name describes | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| BYD Blade Battery | BYD’s LFP chemistry combined with a blade-format pack design. | That every BYD vehicle has identical capacity, range, charging speed or degradation. |
| CATL Qilin | A CATL pack family offered in both NMC and LFP configurations. | That a Qilin-equipped car uses one fixed chemistry or has a particular range. |
| CATL Shenxing | A CATL LFP product family, including long-life products. | That every vehicle using Shenxing has the same warranty or real-world life. |
| Energy density | Energy stored per unit of mass at the cell or pack level, depending on the stated specification. | A direct driving-range result. Vehicle weight, aerodynamics, efficiency and test conditions still matter. |
CATL’s technology page lists 265 Wh/kg for an NMC Qilin configuration and 205 Wh/kg for an LFP Qilin configuration. Those are CATL’s product figures; the published level and configuration must stay attached to each number. A cell-level figure cannot be compared directly with a pack-level figure from another product.
Density is mainly a packaging metric. More energy in a given mass or volume can leave room for a smaller, lighter pack or more usable energy, but the final vehicle may not exploit that advantage. Structural components, cooling hardware, electrical protection, reserves held by the battery-management system and the automaker’s safety margins all affect pack-level density. When a brochure gives one Wh/kg number, check whether it refers to a cell, module or complete pack.
Published range, density and life figures
The figures below are company-published claims tied to named products or vehicles. They are not a matched test of CATL and BYD cars.
| Company and product | Published figure | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| CATL Shenxing Pro | 758 km WLTP range; 12-year / 1,000,000 km lifespan | CATL’s 2025 launch announcement for a named long-life LFP product. It is not a lifespan demonstration for every CATL-equipped vehicle. |
| CATL Shenxing PLUS | More than 1,000 km range; 205 Wh/kg pack energy density | CATL’s Auto China 2024 product announcement. The range is a product claim, not an independently verified real-world result. |
| CATL Qilin | 265 Wh/kg for NMC Qilin; 205 Wh/kg for LFP Qilin | Figures from CATL’s current technology information for specified configurations. They should not be treated as vehicle range. |
| BYD Blade Battery | More than 5,000 charge-and-discharge cycles | BYD’s 2026 company claim for Blade Battery. A cycle claim is not a prediction of years of service for a driver. |
| BYD SEAL Design | 570 km combined-cycle range | A vehicle- and market-specific figure cited in BYD’s January 2026 European release. It is not comparable with CATL’s product announcements without matching cycle and vehicle data. |
| BYD SEALION 7 | Charging specifications are given for a named trim in BYD’s January 2026 release | No single charging number should be generalized to every SEALION 7 version or every BYD battery. |
These examples also show why a product announcement and a vehicle price list answer different questions. Shenxing PLUS’s “more than 1,000 km” statement describes a CATL product configuration, whereas the SEAL Design’s 570 km figure describes a particular vehicle on a combined cycle. Neither number tells you what a different car using the same supplier will achieve.

Why battery brand alone cannot answer the range question
Test cycles are not interchangeable
WLTP, CLTC and a combined-cycle figure are different test regimes. A number measured under one cycle cannot be used as though it were measured under another. Even within one cycle, wheel size, drive layout, software version and optional equipment can change the official result.
Pack capacity and vehicle efficiency come first
Range depends on usable battery energy and how efficiently the car converts it into motion. Weight, aerodynamic drag, tires, drivetrain losses, heating and air-conditioning loads all affect consumption. A vehicle with a lower-density pack can travel farther if it is lighter or more efficient; a higher-density pack does not automatically deliver more kilometers.
Temperature and driving conditions alter the result
Cold weather reduces available energy and increases heating demand. High speeds, steep roads, heavy payloads and repeated acceleration also reduce range. A manufacturer’s product-level range claim therefore cannot be used to predict the result for a different model in a different climate.
Range is not the same as charging convenience
Two vehicles with similar official range can have different charging stops. Compare the maximum DC power, the time needed over a stated window such as 10–80 percent, and how long the car sustains high power before tapering. A peak-kilowatt headline is not a charging curve. Battery temperature, starting state of charge, charger rating and software limits can all change the result.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow to make a fair range comparison
- Choose cars sold in the same country and compare the same official test cycle.
- Match model year, body style, drive configuration, wheel size and trim.
- Record gross and usable battery capacity, identifying whether each figure is published by the automaker or measured independently.
- Check whether density is specified at cell level or pack level.
- Compare independent road tests run in similar temperatures, speeds and payload conditions.
- Keep charging-curve conditions attached to the result: starting state of charge, battery temperature, charger rating and charge window.
- Separate winter and summer results where possible; a single mild-weather test can hide the energy used for cabin heating.
Durability: what the published claims do and do not show
Charge cycles are laboratory-style usage units
One charge cycle generally represents energy equivalent to a full charge and discharge, even when that energy is delivered in several partial sessions. A quoted cycle count does not translate directly into a fixed number of years or kilometers because drivers use different portions of the pack, temperatures vary and vehicles impose different charging limits. The Blade figure is a BYD claim for the battery product, not a controlled comparison against a current CATL pack in identical cars.
Cycle counting also does not describe every source of aging. Calendar time, time spent at a high state of charge, heat during charging, repeated high-power use and the usable buffer selected by the vehicle software can influence capacity loss. Without the test temperature, depth of discharge, charging rate and endpoint definition, two cycle figures cannot be ranked as if they came from one laboratory protocol.
CATL’s long-life claim is product-specific
CATL describes Shenxing Pro as having a 12-year / 1,000,000 km lifespan. That statement belongs to the announced product and its specified operating assumptions. It should not be read as a guarantee that every CATL-powered vehicle will reach that distance, nor as evidence that CATL packs outlast BYD packs in normal fleets.

Temperature management is central
CATL’s announcement states: “As the Arrhenius equation shows, a 10°C increase in battery temperature can roughly double the rate of internal side reactions—an effect that can significantly shorten cycle life.” The statement is presented as CATL’s explanation of temperature effects. It underlines why cooling design, software limits, climate and charging habits matter when assessing degradation.

Those details can matter as much as the cell supplier, yet they are often absent from short advertisements.
Why a cell paper cannot settle the car question
A 2020 laboratory paper examined degradation in selected cells from different manufacturers. Cell tests can reveal useful mechanisms, but they are not a current, controlled fleet comparison of complete CATL-equipped and BYD-equipped cars. They do not establish which company’s present-day packs last longer in vehicles.
Warranty: read the country-specific contract
BYD’s January 2026 European announcement describes an eight-year or 250,000 km Blade Battery warranty extension. The figure applies to the stated European program and must be checked against the exact country, vehicle, start date and terms. A warranty may also specify a minimum capacity-retention threshold, exclusions, servicing conditions and whether time or distance ends coverage first.
Do not substitute a product lifespan claim for a warranty. A lifespan statement describes expected capability under defined conditions; a warranty is a legal promise with eligibility rules. Before buying, obtain the local warranty document and confirm:
- Coverage duration and kilometer limit.
- Any minimum capacity-retention percentage.
- Whether the battery, modules, labor and towing are covered separately.
- Required maintenance, software updates or diagnostic checks.
- Exclusions for collision, flood, unauthorized repair, extreme use or stored vehicles.
- Transferability to a subsequent owner.
Warranty language can also vary between a private car, a commercial vehicle and a replacement pack. Keep the contract, delivery date and service records, and ask how a capacity test is performed if a claim is made. A generous distance limit is useful only if the local dealer can honor the procedure and obtain replacement parts.

- Identify the exact battery. Record chemistry, pack family, gross capacity, usable capacity and production or model year. If the seller only says “CATL” or “Blade,” ask for the vehicle’s technical sheet.
- Lock the market. Prices, equipment, warranty language and official range can differ by country. Use documents issued for the country where the car will be registered.
- Match the test cycle. Put WLTP figures beside WLTP figures and CLTC figures beside CLTC figures. Label any unspecified combined-cycle number rather than treating it as equivalent.
- Separate cell, pack and vehicle data. Do not compare a cell Wh/kg value with a pack Wh/kg value, or either with a vehicle’s kilometers of range.
- Check charging evidence. Look for the maximum DC power, charging time over a stated percentage window and the conditions used. Peak power alone does not describe the whole charging curve.
- Read the warranty before comparing durability. Note capacity thresholds, time, distance, exclusions and regional limits.
- Seek independent degradation data. Prefer multi-year fleet or repeated vehicle tests that identify climate, mileage, charging pattern and measurement method. A single cell experiment or company cycle claim cannot replace that evidence.
- Consider service support. Confirm who can diagnose the high-voltage system, how replacement modules are handled and whether parts and trained technicians are available in your area.
- Record the software version. Battery-management updates can change charging limits, usable energy or range estimates, so note the version when comparing tests.
Which battery should a buyer prefer?
When an LFP pack is the relevant choice
If the specific car uses LFP, evaluate its usable capacity, winter performance, charging limits, thermal system and warranty. The LFP label alone does not determine range or longevity. Blade is an LFP implementation, while CATL also offers LFP products; the surrounding vehicle engineering remains decisive.
When an NMC pack is the relevant choice
If the car uses NMC, compare the complete pack and vehicle rather than assuming CATL’s NMC Qilin density figure applies. Higher stated density can help packaging, but actual range and degradation still depend on capacity, efficiency, temperature control and operating software.

When the evidence is too thin
If a seller cannot identify chemistry, usable capacity, test cycle or warranty terms, treat the comparison as incomplete. A familiar supplier name is not a substitute for vehicle-level specifications and service documentation.
Common comparison mistakes
- “BYD is LFP, so every BYD car is identical.” Blade identifies a product design; trims and markets can differ.
- “CATL means NMC.” CATL sells LFP, NMC and other technologies.
- “The longest advertised range wins.” Product announcements and vehicle ratings may use different cycles and measurement levels.
- “Five thousand cycles equals a guaranteed mileage.” Usage, temperature, usable state-of-charge window and vehicle controls change the outcome.
- “A long-life claim is the same as a warranty.” Claims and legal coverage have different conditions.
- “Cell density predicts the car’s range.” Pack integration and vehicle efficiency can outweigh a cell-level advantage.
- “One laboratory paper proves a brand winner.” Selected-cell testing is not a present-day, real-world comparison of complete vehicles.
- “Peak DC power tells you charging time.” The sustained curve and charge window matter more than one maximum figure.
- “A global warranty applies everywhere.” Warranty extensions are regional and must be checked in the local contract.
Frequently asked questions
Which battery lasts longer, CATL or BYD?
There is no supported brand-wide answer. BYD claims more than 5,000 charge-and-discharge cycles for Blade, while CATL claims a 12-year / 1,000,000 km lifespan for Shenxing Pro. Those are product-specific company claims, not a controlled comparison of complete cars. Use vehicle-level degradation data and the local warranty.
Are BYD Blade batteries better than CATL batteries?
Blade is BYD’s LFP design; CATL sells several LFP and NMC families. “Better” depends on the exact car, usable capacity, efficiency, charging curve, thermal system, price, service network and warranty. A supplier label alone cannot settle the choice.
Do CATL batteries give more range?
Not automatically. CATL has announced products such as Shenxing Pro at 758 km WLTP and Shenxing PLUS at more than 1,000 km, but those figures belong to specified configurations. Vehicle weight, aerodynamics, capacity, test cycle and climate determine the range of the finished car.
Is BYD Blade Battery LFP?
Yes. BYD describes Blade as LFP chemistry combined with a blade-format pack design. The label still does not specify the capacity, trim, software limits or warranty of every Blade-equipped vehicle.

Can I convert a cycle claim into years of driving?
No reliable conversion is possible without assumptions about depth of discharge, temperature, charging rate, mileage and calendar aging. Treat cycle counts as test or product claims, not as a guaranteed odometer figure.
What should I ask a dealer?
Ask for the chemistry and pack family, gross and usable capacity, official test cycle, maximum and sustained charging information, battery warranty with capacity threshold, and the local high-voltage service procedure. If those details are unavailable, the comparison is not complete.
Bottom line
CATL and BYD cannot be ranked fairly as single battery technologies. BYD Blade is an LFP, blade-format design; CATL offers several families and chemistries. CATL’s published products include high-density NMC and LFP Qilin versions, long-range Shenxing announcements and long-life claims, while BYD publishes Blade cycle claims and vehicle-specific range and warranty information. Those numbers are useful only with their product, vehicle, market and test-cycle context. For a purchase decision, compare the exact cars’ usable capacity, matched range tests, charging curve, thermal management, warranty and independent degradation evidence.
