In the CATL new EV battery vs. BYD charging-speed comparison, CATL has the quicker newest published claim for the 10%-to-80% interval: 3 minutes 44 seconds versus BYD’s five minutes for 10%-to-70%. The result is not an across-the-board victory because the companies report different charge windows and undisclosed vehicle, temperature, charger, and infrastructure conditions.
The comparison also needs a date correction. CATL’s April 21, 2025 second-generation Shenxing announcement made headlines with a claim of 520 km of added driving range in five minutes. As of August 14, 2026, CATL’s newer third-generation Shenxing figures are framed around state of charge, while BYD’s March 5, 2026 figures cover its second-generation Blade Battery and FLASH Charging Technology.
Key takeaways
- CATL says its third-generation Shenxing battery can charge from 10% to 80% in 3 minutes 44 seconds in its April 21, 2026 announcement.
- CATL also says the third-generation Shenxing battery can charge from 10% to 98% in 6 minutes 27 seconds and from 20% to 98% in approximately nine minutes at −30°C.
- BYD says its second-generation Blade Battery with FLASH Charging reaches 10% to 70% in five minutes and 10% to 97% in nine minutes.
- CATL’s April 2025 claim of 520 km of added range in five minutes used a different metric from the newer state-of-charge claims, so the figures cannot be treated as a direct apples-to-apples race.
- The battery alone cannot deliver these results: the vehicle, high-power charger, connector, thermal conditions, and grid connection must all support the required charging rate.
Is CATL faster than BYD now?
CATL’s newest published company claim is faster than BYD’s newest published claim over the specific 10%-to-80% versus 10%-to-70% comparison, but the available evidence does not prove that CATL is faster in every real-world situation.
In its April 21, 2026 announcement, CATL says the third-generation Shenxing battery can charge from 10% to 80% in 3 minutes 44 seconds. BYD said in its March 5, 2026 announcement that its second-generation Blade Battery and FLASH Charging Technology can charge from 10% to 70% in five minutes.

That gives CATL the stronger headline on the stated mid-range interval, but the charge windows are different. CATL’s figure covers a 70-percentage-point increase in state of charge, while BYD’s five-minute figure covers 60 percentage points. A fair comparison also needs the same vehicle type, battery capacity, starting temperature, ambient temperature, charger, charging curve, and measurement method.

What did CATL claim about five-minute charging in 2025?
CATL’s earlier second-generation Shenxing battery claim was 520 km of added driving range after five minutes of charging, a range-based claim rather than a 10%-to-80% state-of-charge measurement.
CATL announced that second-generation Shenxing claim on April 21, 2025. EE Times reported the claim as 520 km of range in five minutes and described BYD’s then-current claim as about 400 km in five minutes. The 2025 comparison was an important snapshot of the charging race, but it should not be presented as the final CATL-versus-BYD benchmark.
| Claim | Battery or technology | Measurement | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| CATL, April 21, 2025 | Second-generation Shenxing | 520 km of claimed driving range added in five minutes | It does not state the same state-of-charge window used in the 2026 comparison. |
| BYD, as reported during the 2025 comparison | Then-current BYD fast-charging claim | About 400 km of claimed driving range added in five minutes | It is not the same metric as BYD’s 2026 10%-to-70% and 10%-to-97% claims. |
Claimed range added depends on the vehicle’s battery size, charging curve, and driving-cycle standard. A range figure can therefore look larger or smaller than a state-of-charge figure without proving that one battery has a universally higher charging power.
What do CATL’s and BYD’s charging numbers leave out?
The headline times leave out the conditions that determine whether a driver can reproduce them.

- High density negative paste, improves performance and increases battery life
- Enhanced life alloy/Silver Calcium stamped alloy increases cycle life and improves performance
- Calcium Lead positive grid, maximizes conductivity and allows for low resistance
- Robust Envelope Separator with puncture-resistant back, allows for increased acid circulation and prevents shorts. Improved acid circulation, helps the battery to remain cool, and extend battery life.
- Vent cap design that resists acid leakage
- State-of-charge window: “10% to 80%” and “10% to 70%” are not interchangeable tests. The starting and ending percentages must be identical before the times can be compared directly.
- Charging curve: Peak charging power is not the same as power sustained throughout the session. CATL reports an equivalent 10C rate and a 15C peak rate, but the cited announcement does not provide a complete power-versus-state-of-charge curve.
- Temperature: CATL specifically gives a cold-weather claim of approximately nine minutes from 20% to 98% at −30°C. BYD’s cited announcement does not provide a matching temperature figure.
- What was tested: A battery cell, battery pack, vehicle, and complete charging system are different measurement subjects. The strongest consumer claim is the result achieved by a compatible production vehicle connected to a compatible charger.
- Range standard: The 2025 CATL figure was expressed as claimed driving range, so the driving-cycle standard and vehicle efficiency matter.
- Availability: A battery maker’s specification does not identify which production vehicles, regions, connectors, or charging networks will support the specification.
The correct conclusion is narrower than “CATL blows BYD out of the water.” CATL currently has the quicker published time for its stated 10%-to-80% interval, while BYD publishes a nine-minute 10%-to-97% result and a large charging-station deployment plan. The announcements do not provide a standardized head-to-head test.
Can an EV really charge in five minutes?
An EV can add a substantial amount of usable charge in five minutes when the battery, vehicle, charger, connector, temperature, and grid connection are designed for that power level, but five-minute charging is not a universal full-charge experience.

CATL’s 2025 statement meant 520 km of claimed range added in five minutes under the company’s stated conditions. CATL’s newer 2026 statement means 10% to 80% in 3 minutes 44 seconds, not an empty-to-full charge. BYD’s newer five-minute statement means 10% to 70%, followed by a separate nine-minute claim for 10% to 97%.
The distinction matters because the battery is only one component of the charging system. The vehicle must accept the current, the charger must provide the required output, the connector and cables must be rated for the system, and the electrical installation must be capable of handling the load. A vehicle with a lower charging limit will not reach a battery’s advertised peak simply because the underlying cell chemistry is capable of it.
Why does charging infrastructure matter so much?
Ultra-fast battery performance matters to drivers only where compatible high-power charging infrastructure exists, and the infrastructure is currently the more visible deployment constraint.
The International Energy Agency’s analysis of ultra-fast charging batteries says BYD flash-charging points can reach up to 1.5 MW, while only about 30% of battery-electric cars can currently benefit from ultra-fast chargers. The IEA also warns that high-power charging can create significant grid loads, require network upgrades, and cost more to deploy.

BYD announced plans for 20,000 FLASH Charging Stations across China and said it intended to begin global rollout at scale by the end of 2026. A station-count plan is not the same as a station already operating near a particular driver, and the cited announcement does not establish a complete U.S. rollout or vehicle-by-vehicle eligibility list.
According to the IEA’s Global EV Outlook 2025, the world had more than 5 million public charging points and added more than 1.3 million public points during 2024. According to the IEA’s Global EV Outlook 2026, China had more than 4.7 million public charge points at the end of 2025 and accounted for more than 75% of global public-charging growth during 2025.
Home charging remains the preferred method when it is available, according to the IEA. Public ultra-fast charging is most valuable for long-distance travel, but public availability, queueing, pricing, connector compatibility, and vehicle eligibility determine the driver’s actual experience.
Will CATL’s new battery work in the United States?
There is no verified evidence in the cited announcements that CATL’s newest Shenxing battery is available in a specific U.S.-market vehicle with a compatible consumer-accessible ultra-fast charger.

The CATL announcement does not provide a complete U.S. vehicle roster, universal connector listing, or ordinary retail replacement-battery product. BYD’s plan for 20,000 FLASH Charging Stations is focused first on China, with global rollout at scale planned by the end of 2026; that plan does not automatically make the technology available throughout the United States.
The U.S. Department of Energy’s consumer EV guide explains that charging equipment delivers energy to an EV and that equipment selection must match the vehicle’s charging capability. Before treating any CATL or BYD charging claim as a buying decision, a U.S. buyer would need to verify all of the following:
Rank #4
- High density negative paste, improves performance and increases battery life
- Enhanced life alloy or Silver Calcium stamped alloy increases cycle life and improves performance, High density plate oxide provides for maximum power-per-pound and dependable high cycling service
- Calcium Lead positive grid, maximizes conductivity and allows for low resistance
- Robust Envelope Separator with puncture-resistant back, allows for increased acid circulation and prevents shorts. Improved acid circulation, helps the battery to remain cool, and extend battery life
- Vent cap design that resists acid leakage
- The exact vehicle model and its maximum DC charging input.
- The vehicle’s battery chemistry, pack architecture, and approved charging conditions.
- The connector and charging standard used by the vehicle and the station.
- The charger’s advertised power, not merely the battery maker’s peak-rate claim.
- Whether the charging network permits that vehicle to use the station.
- Whether the claimed speed applies to the complete vehicle and charger rather than only a cell or battery-pack test.
Does ultra-fast charging damage an EV battery?
The supplied evidence does not establish a universal answer for every EV, but CATL says its third-generation Shenxing battery retained more than 90% capacity after 1,000 complete cycles in the company’s reported durability result.
That is a manufacturer-reported result, not independent laboratory or fleet evidence. The cited BYD announcement does not provide a matching capacity-retention figure, so the available material cannot support a direct durability ranking between Shenxing and Blade.

CATL uses that point to frame chemistry choice as application-dependent: lithium iron phosphate can be well suited to a fast-charging-focused roadmap, while higher-energy-density chemistries remain relevant for long-range applications. The statement does not mean LFP development has ended or that every LFP battery has the same charging behavior.
For consumers, battery longevity depends on the specific vehicle’s thermal management, charging controls, battery design, and operating conditions. The CATL durability claim is encouraging for that product family, but it should not be generalized to every EV or treated as independent verification.
What can consumers actually buy?
Consumers can buy ordinary EV charging equipment, but the cited research does not identify a retail CATL replacement battery, a universal BYD-compatible battery pack, or a consumer accessory that reproduces either company’s headline charging speed.
If you are shopping for an EV charging cable, use the vehicle manufacturer’s specifications to confirm connector type, current rating, and intended charging mode. The cable is an accessory within the charging system; it cannot turn ordinary home equipment into CATL’s claimed high-power system or BYD’s reported 1.5-MW flash-charging infrastructure.

Home charging equipment is a separate decision from megawatt public charging. A home installation must be matched to the vehicle, the property’s electrical service, and the equipment’s rated output. The DOE guide’s compatibility guidance is more useful for that purchase than the battery makers’ headline charging times.
Do not buy a generic product advertised as a “CATL battery” or “BYD-compatible battery” without an exact vehicle, pack, connector, voltage, software, and safety match. No ordinary Amazon listing or universal replacement part was verified for the newest Shenxing or Blade systems in the cited research.
Bottom line
CATL has the stronger newest published charging claim on the stated 10%-to-80% interval: 3 minutes 44 seconds. BYD’s published figures remain highly competitive at 10%-to-70% in five minutes and 10%-to-97% in nine minutes, but the different state-of-charge windows prevent a simple overall winner.
The practical story is not that every CATL-powered EV will charge faster than every BYD-powered EV. The practical story is that battery companies are approaching extremely short charging times while compatible vehicles, high-power stations, grid capacity, temperature control, and regional deployment determine whether drivers can actually experience them.

Will CATL’s newest EV battery be available in the United States?
There is no verified evidence in the cited announcements that CATL’s newest Shenxing battery is available in a specific U.S.-market vehicle with a compatible ultra-fast charger. CATL’s announcement does not provide a complete U.S. vehicle roster, universal connector listing, or ordinary retail replacement battery.
Does CATL’s five-minute claim mean every EV can gain 520 km of range?
No. CATL’s 2025 claim referred to 520 km of claimed range added in five minutes, while CATL’s newer claim refers to charging from 10% to 80% in 3 minutes 44 seconds. Neither figure means every EV can add 520 km or charge completely in five minutes.
Can an EV charging cable enable CATL or BYD’s fastest charging speeds?
No. An EV charging cable or home charger must match the vehicle’s charging capability, and a cable alone cannot create CATL’s or BYD’s ultra-high-power charging speed. The newest battery claims require a compatible vehicle, charger, connector, thermal conditions, and electrical infrastructure.
The Bottom Line
CATL’s newest Shenxing claim is faster than BYD’s published claim over the specific intervals reported, but “blows BYD out of the water” is too broad. Both sets of figures are company claims made under conditions that are not standardized head to head, and neither battery can deliver its headline speed without a compatible vehicle and charging system.
