From shortest to longest, Audi’s U.S. SUV lineup is Q3, Q4 e-tron, Q5, Q6 e-tron, Q8, Q7, and the announced Q9. This ranking uses overall exterior length, which makes the Q8-versus-Q7 result easy to understand: the Q8 badge is higher, but the Q7 is longer and has a third row.
Smallest to biggest: the Audi SUV lineup
Measured by overall exterior length, Audi’s U.S. SUV lineup ranks as follows: Q3, Q4 e-tron, Q5, Q6 e-tron, Q8, Q7, and—once it arrives—the larger Q9. The key exception to Audi’s badge hierarchy is the Q8: despite its higher number, it is shorter than the three-row Q7.
| Rank | Audi SUV | Approx. length | Seats | Powertrain | Best described as |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Q3 | 178.4 in | 5 | Gasoline | Smallest, city-friendly Audi SUV |
| 2 | Q4 e-tron | 180.7 in | 5 | Battery electric | Nearly Q3-sized EV |
| 3 | Q5 | 185.7 in | 5 | Gasoline | Compact luxury SUV and middle ground |
| 4 | Q6 e-tron | 187.8 in | 5 | Battery electric | Electric midsize SUV |
| 5 | Q8 | About 196 in | 5 | Gasoline | Large, coupe-inspired five-seater |
| 6 | Q7 | 199.3 in | Up to 7 | Gasoline | Established three-row family SUV |
| 7 | Q9 | About 209.0 in | 6 or 7 announced | Flagship SUV; details pending | Largest announced Audi SUV |
The measurements are approximate because published specifications can vary slightly by trim, equipment, body style, and measurement convention. This ranking uses overall exterior length as the most consistent measure of the vehicle’s outside footprint—not price, wheelbase, curb weight, interior volume, or performance.
1. Audi Q3: approximately 178.4 inches
The 2026 Audi Q3 is the smallest mainstream Audi SUV in the U.S. lineup. Its relatively short body makes it the easiest Audi SUV to maneuver in tight urban streets, parking garages, and compact driveways.

The redesigned Q3 uses a 255-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, a seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission, and standard quattro all-wheel drive. Audi reports approximately 25 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats, 29 cubic feet with the sliding rear bench moved forward, and nearly 50 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. Properly equipped, it can tow up to 1,500 pounds.
Choose the Q3 if: parking ease and a smaller exterior footprint matter more than maximum passenger space or towing capacity. It is the logical entry point for shoppers who want an Audi SUV but do not need a three-row vehicle.
2. Audi Q4 e-tron: approximately 180.7 inches
The Q4 e-tron is only about 2.3 inches longer than the Q3, making it the second-smallest Audi SUV by exterior length. That close dimensional relationship is useful: the Q4 e-tron delivers a compact footprint without using a gasoline powertrain.
The 2026 U.S. lineup includes rear-wheel-drive Q4 45 and dual-motor quattro Q4 55 versions. Both use an 82-kWh gross battery. Audi lists 288 miles of EPA-estimated range for the Q4 45 e-tron and 258 miles for the Q4 55 e-tron quattro, subject to final configuration and EPA qualification. Maximum cargo volume with the rear seats folded is listed at 53.1 cubic feet—more than the Q3’s reported maximum despite the Q4’s similarly compact exterior length.

Choose the Q4 e-tron if: you want an electric SUV that remains close to Q3 size. The Q4 is not simply the “next size up” from the Q3; its EV packaging and charging requirements make it a different ownership proposition.
3. Audi Q5: approximately 185.7 inches
At about 185.7 inches long, the 2026 Q5 is approximately 7.3 inches longer than the Q3. It occupies the lineup’s most useful middle ground: larger and more accommodating than the Q3 or Q4 e-tron, while still considerably easier to place than the three-row Q7.

Audi describes the Q5 as its best-selling SUV and offers it in conventional SUV and Sportback forms. The U.S.-market 2026 Q5 uses a 268-horsepower turbocharged engine producing 295 pound-feet of torque, with standard quattro all-wheel drive. Audi lists a 5.8-second 0-to-60-mph time for the standard Q5 configuration. The SQ5 and SQ5 Sportback add performance-oriented alternatives within the same family.
Choose the Q5 if: you need a versatile five-seat luxury SUV for commuting, family use, and road trips but do not need a third row. The Q5 is also the lineup’s natural compromise between compact maneuverability and everyday cargo utility.
Useful Q5 ownership accessories
Buyers comparing the Q5’s everyday practicality may also want to look at an Audi Q5 cargo liner or Audi Q5 all-weather floor mats. These are model-specific accessories, so confirm the model year, body style, trim, and—where applicable—VIN before ordering. A mat designed for one Q5 generation or for the standard SUV may not fit a Q5 Sportback correctly.
4. Audi Q6 e-tron: approximately 187.8 inches
The Q6 e-tron measures about 187.8 inches long, only around 2.1 inches longer than the Q5. Audi positions it as a premium midsize all-electric SUV, but its slightly greater length does not turn it into a three-row vehicle: it remains a five-seat SUV.
The Q6 e-tron is built on Audi’s Premium Platform Electric architecture. Audi’s initial technical presentation identified a 100-kWh battery, while Audi USA describes the standard model as capable of more than 300 miles of preliminary manufacturer-estimated EPA-cycle range. The U.S. model page lists 307 miles for a standard-wheel configuration. Actual range, output, charging performance, and equipment depend on trim, wheels, tires, and model year.
Choose the Q6 e-tron if: you want the Q5’s general size category but prefer a newer electric platform and EV performance. Its principal advantage over the Q5 is its powertrain and charging proposition—not a dramatic increase in passenger capacity.
Charging planning for the electric Audi SUVs
Q4 e-tron and Q6 e-tron shoppers should evaluate home charging before buying. A home EV charger compatible with the Audi Q4 e-tron or Q6 e-tron must match the vehicle’s charging equipment, the home’s electrical service, and local code requirements. Have installation reviewed and completed by a qualified electrician; do not assume that any advertised charger delivers the same charging speed or is suitable for every electrical panel.
5. Audi Q8: approximately 196 inches
The Q8 is approximately 196 inches long, with published U.S. figures varying from about 196.0 to 196.6 inches. That makes it a large Audi SUV, but not the largest one. Despite its higher badge number, the Q8 is shorter than the Q7.

The 2026 Q8 is a five-seat luxury SUV with a coupe-inspired roofline, standard quattro all-wheel drive, 335 horsepower, and 369 pound-feet of torque. Audi lists up to 60.7 cubic feet of cargo volume with the rear seats folded and towing capacity of up to 7,700 pounds when properly equipped.
Choose the Q8 if: you want a substantial five-seat SUV with a more dramatic, sloping profile and do not need a third row. Its styling and seating configuration distinguish it from the more practical Q7, even though the two are close in exterior size.
6. Audi Q7: approximately 199.3 inches
At approximately 199.3 inches long, the Q7 is about 2.7 to 3.3 inches longer than the Q8, depending on the source and measurement convention. It is Audi’s established large family SUV and seats up to seven people across three rows.
For 2026, Audi offers Q7 45 and Q7 55 powertrains. The Q7 45 uses a 261-horsepower four-cylinder, while the Q7 55 uses a 335-horsepower V6. The Q7 55 can tow up to 7,700 pounds when properly equipped. With the second- and third-row seats folded, Audi lists up to 68.1 cubic feet of cargo volume.
Choose the Q7 if: you regularly carry more than five people, need occasional or frequent third-row seating, or value family-oriented cargo flexibility more than the Q8’s coupe-like design. The Q7’s extra length is modest on paper, but its third row changes how the vehicle serves a family.
Roof storage for the Q7
A Q7 roof rack or roof box can add useful capacity for luggage, sports equipment, or bulky items on road trips. Check Audi’s specified carrier bars, roof-box compatibility, roof load limits, and the exact Q7 model year before purchasing. A roof box’s advertised volume—Audi materials describe a 510-liter option—is not a substitute for confirming the vehicle’s permitted load and the accessory system’s limits.

The announced Q9 is the largest Audi SUV in this comparison, at approximately 209.0 inches long. Audi describes it as the brand’s first full-size SUV and an upcoming flagship. Reported dimensional information also gives it an approximately 123.5-inch wheelbase and an 86.8-inch width including mirrors.

Audi has described six- and seven-seat configurations, including an optional six-seat layout. However, the Q9 is an announced 2027 model rather than an established 2026 retail vehicle. Audi’s final product details were scheduled for disclosure with its summer 2026 world premiere, so U.S. pricing, EPA figures, final trim availability, dealer inventory, and every production specification should not be treated as settled unless separately confirmed.
Choose the Q9 if: you want Audi’s largest planned SUV and need full-size proportions with three-row seating. If you are shopping for a vehicle available now, treat the Q9 as a future model and compare the current Q7 instead.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the badge numbers do not tell the whole story
The Q8 is shorter than the Q7
The Q8-versus-Q7 comparison is the lineup’s most important naming trap. The Q8’s number is higher, but its approximately 196-inch body is shorter than the Q7’s approximately 199.3-inch body. More importantly, the Q8 seats five, while the Q7 offers up to seven seats.

The Q4 e-tron is nearly Q3-sized, and the Q6 e-tron is only slightly longer than the Q5. The electric models’ names identify their position within Audi’s broader portfolio, but they should not be interpreted as a perfect length or interior-space ranking against gasoline Q models.
Sportback, S, and RS versions are variants—not separate size classes
Sportback versions generally share their parent family’s basic footprint while changing the roofline, styling, and sometimes cargo usability. S and RS models are performance variants. For a size ranking, it is more useful to group Q5 Sportback with the Q5, SQ5 with the Q5 family, and SQ8 or RS Q8 with the Q8 family unless the comparison specifically concerns performance or cargo measurements.
Which Audi SUV size is right for you?
| Your priority | Best starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Smallest footprint and easier parking | Q3 | Shortest current mainstream Audi SUV |
| Compact-size electric driving | Q4 e-tron | Only slightly longer than the Q3, with EV packaging |
| All-around five-seat utility | Q5 | More room than the Q3/Q4 without reaching large-SUV dimensions |
| Electric midsize performance and range | Q6 e-tron | Slightly larger than the Q5 and built as a dedicated premium EV |
| Five seats, large footprint, distinctive styling | Q8 | Large coupe-inspired SUV with strong towing capacity |
| Regular family hauling and third-row seating | Q7 | Up to seven seats and more cargo flexibility |
| Maximum planned size and flagship presence | Q9 | Announced full-size SUV, expected for the 2027 model year |
How much difference does a few inches make?
The gap between adjacent models is often smaller than the badge names suggest. The Q3 and Q4 e-tron differ by only about 2.3 inches in length. The Q5 and Q6 e-tron are separated by roughly 2.1 inches. Even the Q8 and Q7 differ by only around three inches.

Those small exterior differences can still correspond to meaningful ownership differences. A third row changes the Q7’s family usefulness; the Q4 e-tron and Q6 e-tron require charging planning; and the Q8’s sloping roof prioritizes design over the Q7’s more conventional cargo and passenger layout. Before choosing, compare not only length but also width including mirrors, turning space, cargo shape, seating access, garage clearance, and the room needed to open the liftgate.
Bottom line
For Audi’s U.S. SUV lineup, the order from smallest to largest is Q3, Q4 e-tron, Q5, Q6 e-tron, Q8, Q7, and Q9. The Q3 is the smallest current choice, the Q5 is the versatile middle ground, the Q7 is the established three-row family option, and the announced Q9 will be the full-size flagship. The Q8 is the crucial exception: it is shorter than the Q7 and has five seats rather than three-row capacity.
