Yutong’s electric-bus technology page lists a long-life battery with a service-life figure of 15 years or 1.5 million kilometers—about 932,000 miles—and more than 10,000 cycles. That is a manufacturer-stated specification for a commercial bus system, not a lifespan promise for every CATL battery or private electric car. Yutong’s brochure adds an important qualification: battery decay is stated not to exceed 30% over the specified 15-year/1.5-million-kilometer operating horizon.
What does the 15-year, 932,000-mile figure describe?
The headline figure converts 1.5 million kilometers to roughly 932,000 miles. Yutong’s EV Long-Life Tech page presents 15 years/1.5 million km as the service life of a long-life battery in its electric-bus technology. Its technical brochure likewise describes the electric bus system as designed for that horizon.
This is a commercial-vehicle claim. Launch-era reporting in April 2024 associated the battery with CATL and Yutong and described use in buses and trucks, but the current Yutong product description is specifically framed around its bus technology. It does not establish that a passenger car fitted with a CATL battery will travel 1.5 million km or remain in service for 15 years.
What does Yutong say about battery degradation?
Yutong’s brochure states that battery decay is guaranteed not to exceed 30% within 15 years or 1.5 million km of operation. In practical terms, the claim allows for degradation: it is not a promise that the battery retains all of its original capacity throughout the period. The brochure’s wording is the published technical qualification; the reviewed material does not provide the full contract terms governing eligibility, operating duty, regional coverage, or remedies.

Yutong’s current product page also lists more than 10,000 cycles and an energy density of 175 Wh/kg for the long-life battery. These are separate measures from calendar life and distance: a cycle count is not a guarantee that a particular bus will cover a given distance, and the page does not define a duty cycle that would translate those cycles into years or mileage.
Is the 15-year figure a warranty?
Not on the evidence of the published Yutong specification and brochure alone. They describe a service-life/design target and a degradation qualification, but do not provide a complete warranty contract for this specific battery. Treating the 15-year figure as a universal warranty would go beyond what those documents establish.

CATL’s warranty terms vary by product and application. Its operating-vehicle solution page gives an eight-year or 800,000-km warranty, while CATL’s July 4, 2024 TIANXING-L commercial battery announcement states eight years/800,000 km for the products named there. Those terms are examples for separate CATL solutions, not proof of the Yutong battery’s warranty.
A further example illustrates why the exact pack and market matter: a CATL warranty document hosted by Coulomb Solutions sets five years/400,000 km, or seven years/500,000 km if extended terms apply, whichever occurs first, with an 80% capacity threshold. It is dated June 20, 2022 and applies to specified LFP packs sold through CSI for approved North American applications—not to the Yutong bus system generally. See the warranty document for its scope.

How does this compare with CATL’s passenger-car claims?
CATL’s passenger-vehicle page describes a separate hybrid-battery solution as retaining more than 80% capacity after 6,000 charge-discharge cycles, with service life as long as 15 years. That is a different product description and metric from Yutong’s 1.5-million-km bus claim; it does not show that a private-car battery will reach that mileage.
Likewise, NIO’s March 14, 2024 announcement about a framework agreement with CATL says NIO’s battery-health operations had retained 80% capacity after 12 years. That is NIO’s account of its battery-swap operations and management practices, not a controlled comparison with the Yutong system.

How strong is the evidence for the long-life claim?
The current primary evidence is manufacturer material: Yutong’s product page and technical brochure. Yutong says its battery-management-system strategy was developed using 46.8 billion km of operational data, but its page does not explain the dataset’s composition, the testing protocol, or an independent audit. The figure describes operational data cited by the manufacturer; it should not be read as an independently verified battery-life test.
No independent test report for the exact Yutong/CATL 15-year, 1.5-million-km claim is established in the available material. A 2024 Electrek report repeated a launch-era claim of zero degradation through the first 1,000 cycles. That early statement is not the same as Yutong’s current published specification of more than 10,000 cycles or its brochure’s limit of no more than 30% decay over the stated service horizon.

What should an EV or fleet buyer take from the claim?
- For a bus operator: regard 15 years/1.5 million km as a potentially relevant manufacturer specification, then request the model-specific contract and operating conditions before using it in a fleet-cost or replacement forecast.
- For a private-car buyer: do not apply the bus figure to a passenger EV. Check the warranty for the exact vehicle, battery, market, and model year, including its time or distance limit and capacity threshold.
- When comparing battery claims: distinguish calendar years, distance, cycles, remaining capacity, and warranty coverage. A large number in one category is not directly comparable with a number in another.
