CATL and Changan announced a mass-production passenger EV using CATL’s Naxtra sodium-ion battery on February 5, 2026. CATL says the vehicle’s pure-electric range exceeds 400 km (about 248 miles); Live Science identifies the car as the Changan Nevo A06, also called Qiyuan A06 in China, and reports a 45 kWh battery pack. The range is a manufacturer claim, not a verified real-world result, and the announcement text does not specify a test cycle.
What CATL and Changan announced
At an event in Yakeshi, Inner Mongolia, the companies presented what CATL calls the world’s first mass-production passenger vehicle equipped with a sodium-ion battery. CATL’s announcement says the battery, branded Naxtra, will be supplied across Changan’s portfolio, including AVATR, Deepal, Qiyuan and UNI. It described the vehicle as expected to reach the market by mid-2026; the reviewed sources do not establish whether retail sales or deliveries have since begun, nor give a price or export plan. CATL’s February 5, 2026 announcement does not name the car. Live Science’s March 6, 2026 report identifies it as the Nevo A06, also known domestically as Qiyuan A06, and gives a 45 kWh pack; those model and capacity details are attributed to that report.
What the 248-mile range does—and does not—mean
The figure is a conversion of 400 km. CATL’s February 2026 release says Naxtra-equipped pure-electric vehicles can travel more than 400 km, while Live Science reports a 400 km (248-mile) claim for the Nevo A06. Neither source’s cited announcement text specifies the test cycle, so the number should not be treated as a directly comparable EPA, WLTP or other cycle-rated range, or as a promise of the distance in everyday driving. CATL’s separate April 2025 Naxtra product announcement stated a 500 km range for its passenger battery product line. That is a distinct product-line claim, not the vehicle-specific figure reported for the Changan car. CATL’s April 21, 2025 announcement does not establish a cycle-matched comparison between the two figures.
What CATL says the battery can do
CATL presents sodium-ion as one part of a “dual-chemistry” approach, with sodium-ion and lithium-ion serving different needs rather than one replacing the other. Its stated advantages for Naxtra include cold-weather performance and diversification of battery materials. These specifications and comparisons are company claims, not independent tests of the Changan vehicle.

Because the range claims do not come with a stated common test cycle, they cannot by themselves show how this car compares with a lithium-ion EV in distance per charge. A useful comparison would also need comparable pack capacity and vehicle configuration, charging rate, price, availability and independently documented test results.
Safety claims and the certification CATL cites
CATL says Naxtra passed China’s GB 38031-2025 Electric Vehicles Traction Battery Safety Requirements certification after tests on September 5, 2025. The company said the standard would take effect on July 1, 2026. CATL also reported that crushing, drilling and sawing tests left the battery without smoke or fire while it continued to provide power. Changan’s account describes related multi-axis crushing, drill-penetration and complete-sawing abuse tests, reporting no smoke, fire or explosion. CATL’s certification announcement and Changan’s February 2026 account are the sources for these claims. They describe a named standard and company-reported test outcomes; they do not establish that the battery is fireproof or risk-free in every crash, defect or operating condition.

What remains unknown to prospective buyers
- Retail availability and price: CATL’s stated target was market entry by mid-2026. The cited materials do not confirm current sales, deliveries, pricing or availability outside China.
- Comparable range: The vehicle announcement does not state the range-test cycle, and no cycle-matched comparison with a lithium-ion car is supplied.
- Charging: The cited announcements do not specify the Nevo A06’s charging rate or charging time.
- Independent validation: The cited performance and abuse-test information comes from CATL and Changan; no independent comparative test of this specific vehicle is established in these sources.
CATL says it began sodium-ion research in 2016, invested nearly 10 billion RMB, developed nearly 300,000 test cells and involved more than 300 R&D personnel, including 20 PhDs.
