The Caterpillar Diesel 60 was an early diesel crawler tractor introduced in September 1931—not a reference to a modern Caterpillar engine. Historical accounts describe it as a diesel-powered development of Caterpillar’s Sixty tractor, with changes to its frame and undercarriage. Its diesel-specific factory specifications are not firmly established by the sources available here.
What was the Caterpillar Diesel 60?
The Diesel 60, also called the Diesel Sixty, was a Caterpillar crawler tractor from the early 1930s. The University of California archive’s collection list identifies a “Caterpillar Diesel 60, 1931,” though the listing itself provides no further data (University of California archive). Historical accounts place its debut in September 1931 (Successful Farming; Assembly).
This is a specific historic tractor, not a general description of Caterpillar diesel engines. The surviving published accounts cited here are retrospective or archival rather than factory manuals, so details such as horsepower and dimensions need careful qualification.
What engine did the Diesel Sixty use?
A 2011 Successful Farming retrospective identifies the engine as Caterpillar’s four-cylinder D9900 diesel. It says engineer Arthur Rosen developed the engine after Caterpillar evaluated a Benz diesel, and describes the D9900 as installed in a strengthened Sixty tractor platform (Successful Farming).

The same retrospective reports early cylinder-wall scoring and says Caterpillar believed fuel quality contributed to the problems, prompting work with oil companies on fuel quality. Those are retrospective claims, not a complete or independently verified account of the engine’s reliability. They do not establish that every Diesel 60 had the same issue or justify a broad judgment about the model.
How did it differ from the gasoline Caterpillar Sixty?
Assembly’s 2025 history of Caterpillar, drawing on historian and author Eric Orlemann, describes a reinforced chassis frame, a geared-down version of the gas tractor’s transmission, and changes to the radiator, track links, and undercarriage. Orlemann’s quoted description says, “The chassis frames were heavier and reinforced, and included a special geared-down version of the transmission used in the gas version” (Assembly).

Assembly reports the Diesel 60 at 25,000 pounds and its gasoline counterpart at 20,500 pounds. These are figures reported by that historical article, not specifications independently confirmed here by a Caterpillar factory record.
What are the Caterpillar Diesel 60’s specifications?
Published figures for the Model Sixty are often repeated as though they all describe the Diesel Sixty. The specialist ChrisCo Machinery reference lists 20,500 pounds, 65 drawbar horsepower, 77 belt/PTO horsepower, four cylinders with a 6½ × 8½-inch bore and stroke, 650 rpm, a 70-gallon fuel capacity, and a 72-inch gauge (ChrisCo Machinery). The page does not clearly establish that those values apply to the diesel configuration. They should not be treated as confirmed Diesel 60 specifications.

The available accounts support identifying the D9900 as a four-cylinder diesel, but do not provide a complete, verified factory specification set for the diesel tractor. In particular, the reported 25,000-pound Diesel 60 weight from Assembly differs from the 20,500-pound Model Sixty figure on the specialist page; the latter is not proof of the diesel tractor’s weight.
What work did the Diesel 60 do?
A 1947 Norwegian road administration publication documents a Caterpillar Diesel 60 used for roadwork with a homemade scraper. It reports grading output of approximately 28 cubic metres per hour in ordinary terrain (Meddelelser fra Vegdirektøren, 1947). That is a period report tied to a particular machine, attachment, task, and setting—not a general productivity rating for the model.

What is known—and what remains uncertain
- Well-supported identification: the Diesel Sixty was a Caterpillar crawler tractor introduced in 1931, with historical accounts placing its debut in September.
- Reported engine and design history: secondary histories identify the four-cylinder D9900 diesel and describe structural changes from the gasoline Sixty.
- Not established as diesel specifications: the horsepower, bore and stroke, fuel capacity, and other Model Sixty figures on the specialist reference page.
- Context-specific evidence: the Norwegian roadwork report shows one documented use and a reported work rate, not standardized performance testing.
For restoration, identification, or parts decisions, verify the tractor’s model and serial number against appropriate records. The published references cited here do not establish exact compatible parts or a complete diesel-specific specification sheet.
