Catalytic converters are stolen because they contain valuable metals and can be cut from an accessible vehicle in well under a few minutes. SUVs, pickups, vans, buses and many hybrids are especially attractive targets. A vehicle-specific shield or cage, secure and visible parking, and prompt identification measures can reduce the opportunity, but none guarantees prevention. In the United States, theft is generally handled under optional comprehensive auto coverage—not liability-only insurance—subject to your deductible and policy wording.
Why catalytic converters are stolen
A catalytic converter is part of a vehicle’s exhaust system that reduces dangerous gases, as Police.uk explains. Thieves target the unit for the precious metals inside, then sell the converter or its materials. The crime is attractive because removal can be quick, quiet and difficult to notice until the vehicle is started.

- Resale value: The metals can make converters profitable to organized buyers and scrap channels.
- Speed: Police.uk says a converter can be removed in less than a minute in some circumstances; the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) describes removal with a saw or wrench in a few minutes.
- Concealment: A thief can work beneath a parked vehicle, particularly at night or in a poorly observed lot.
- Physical access: High-clearance vehicles leave more room to slide underneath without lifting the vehicle.
NICB recorded more than 64,000 catalytic-converter thefts in the United States during 2022. California and Texas together accounted for more than 32,000 of those 2022 thefts. For historical context, NICB recorded 25,394 thefts nationally from 2008 through 2015; that older figure is not a current annual estimate.

Which vehicles thieves target
High-clearance vehicles
SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and buses are commonly targeted because their ground clearance makes the converter easier to reach. A thief may not need a jack, reducing both time and the chance of being noticed.

Hybrid vehicles
Hybrids are often targeted because their converters may retain more valuable metals. A hybrid that spends more time running its gasoline engine less aggressively can leave the converter’s catalyst in better condition, which may increase its appeal to thieves. Risk still varies by model, location and local resale activity.
Vehicles parked in exposed locations
Any model can be vulnerable when parked for long periods in an isolated, poorly lit car park or fleet yard. Accessibility and concealment can matter as much as the vehicle badge.

How to prevent catalytic-converter theft
Fit a vehicle-specific anti-theft device
Ask a dealer or qualified exhaust-security installer about a shield, guard, lock or cage designed for your exact year, make and model. NICB recommends installing a catalytic-converter anti-theft device. Police.uk mentions guards tested to Sold Secure Gold; availability and approval depend on your country and vehicle.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA device should obstruct cutting and removal without interfering with heat dissipation, oxygen sensors, exhaust movement, servicing or ground clearance. Universal products may leave gaps or conflict with underbody components, so verify fit before purchase.

Improve where and how you park
- Use a locked garage whenever possible.
- Otherwise park in a busy, visible, well-lit area.
- Choose a position covered by cameras or near a building entrance.
- Use motion-sensor lighting at a home driveway or fleet yard.
- For fleets, keep vehicles overnight in an enclosed, locked, alarmed and well-lit area.
Add identification
VIN etching or another identification program can help link a converter to its vehicle and may deter resale. At a May 17, 2025 event reported by NICB, more than 100 residents had identification numbers etched onto converters. Ask local police, a dealer or a reputable security provider which marking programs are recognized in your area.
Do not use dangerous deterrents
Never install booby traps or modifications that could injure someone, damage the vehicle, create an exhaust hazard or violate local law. These steps can expose you to liability while failing to protect the car.

Is a catalytic-converter shield worth it?
For a high-risk vehicle or a car that must remain outdoors, a properly fitted shield can be a sensible layer of deterrence. It is not theft-proof: a determined thief may cut around it, remove it with the converter, or move on if the device makes the job too slow or conspicuous.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does insurance cover a stolen catalytic converter?
In the United States, optional comprehensive coverage generally addresses theft because it covers non-collision damage. NICB states that comprehensive coverage can cover this loss. Your policy, deductible, exclusions and state rules control the actual claim.
| Coverage | Typical treatment of converter theft |
|---|---|
| Comprehensive | Usually covered as theft or other non-collision damage, minus the policy deductible and subject to terms |
| Liability-only | Does not pay to repair or replace your own stolen converter |
| Collision | Generally addresses crash damage, not a converter stolen while parked |
Check whether the policy covers an original-equipment or aftermarket replacement, labor, towing, temporary transportation and any custom equipment. A claim may not be economical when the repair total is close to the comprehensive deductible. Claim frequency can affect future premiums or eligibility, and those effects vary by insurer and jurisdiction.
What to do after a catalytic converter is stolen
- Protect people and evidence. Photograph the missing converter, cut exhaust pipes, warning lights and surrounding damage before moving or cleaning anything.
- Decide whether the vehicle is safe to move. Do not drive if exhaust fumes can enter the cabin, components may fall, or damage affects braking, fuel lines or other systems. Arrange a tow or inspection.
- File a police report. Keep the report or case number and provide photographs, location and the vehicle identification number.
- Notify the insurer promptly. Ask which documents, estimates, inspection and anti-theft-device details it requires.
- Get a written estimate. Use a qualified exhaust shop or dealer and request an itemized parts-and-labor total.
- Compare the total with your deductible. Include towing and related covered costs, then decide whether filing a claim is financially worthwhile.
- Keep receipts. Retain towing, temporary transportation and repair records in case the policy reimburses them.
Questions to ask a dealer, installer or insurer
- Is this guard approved or recommended for my exact vehicle and engine?
- Will installation affect heat management, sensors, servicing or the vehicle warranty?
- Does the installer need to drill or weld, and what warranty covers that work?
- What is my comprehensive deductible, and are aftermarket parts covered?
- Are towing, inspection, rental-car or temporary-transport costs included?
- Would VIN etching or an approved anti-theft device qualify for any policy discount?
Coverage details and approved equipment differ by vehicle year, model, insurer, state and country. Confirm them in your policy and with the relevant dealer, installer or insurance representative before relying on them.
