Two engines in one car usually meant a practical engineering shortcut or an all-out competition experiment: put one combustion engine at each end, and each can drive its own axle without a conventional transfer case. The examples below include a limited-production utility car, an abandoned prototype and a hill-climb racer—not ten production models. The available evidence supports three distinct vehicles, so this article does not pad the list to match the original count.
Why put two engines in one car?
In the best-documented examples here, a second engine supplied power to the other axle. That arrangement could deliver four-wheel drive without a mechanical link between the front and rear axles, but it also meant carrying and coordinating two separate powerplants and drivetrains. The trade-off suited very different aims: a light all-terrain vehicle, an experimental small car, and a purpose-built hill-climb machine.
“Twin-engine” here means two combustion engines, not a modern electric car with a motor on each axle. And “came with” needs qualification: only one of these examples was produced as a model; the others were a prototype and a competition car.

Citroën 2CV Sahara: the production twin-engine 4×4
Purpose and layout
The Sahara adapted the familiar 2CV for light all-terrain use associated with North Africa. It had a second engine and drivetrain at the rear, with one engine driving each axle. In the layout described by the specialist history, the rear engine faced backwards. This gave the small car four-wheel drive without a conventional transfer case. The Louwman Museum includes a 2CV 4×4 Sahara in its collection.

How many were built?
Hagerty UK reports that 694 were produced. Other summaries round the total to about 700, so use 694 as an attributed historical figure rather than an uncontested factory count. Hagerty UK’s history of the 2CV Sahara and the Louwman Museum collection record provide further context.
Twini Moke: the prototype that never reached production
Two Mini front ends, one experimental Moke
The British Motor Museum records a 1962 Twini Moke built around two Mini front subframes, including engines—one at each end. The unusual arrangement was an experiment in adding traction, not a factory Moke variant offered to buyers.

Why the project stopped
The museum says cost and complication outweighed the traction benefits, and the car was never manufactured. That makes the Twini a useful example of the twin-engine idea’s central compromise: the second engine can drive the other axle, but it brings extra mechanical complexity. Volkswagen Golf II Pikes Peak: twin turbo engines for the climb
Powertrain and configuration
Volkswagen’s 1987 Golf II Pikes Peak used two turbocharged 1,781 cc four-cylinder engines, one at the front and one at the rear. Volkswagen rated each at 326 PS, for a stated combined output of 652 PS. The manufacturer says the car could be driven in front-, rear- or all-wheel drive as required.

Race outcome
Driver Klaus-Joachim “Jochi” Kleint retired just short of the summit finish. Volkswagen presents the car as the culmination of earlier dual-engine Jetta II and Golf II GTI projects. These specifications and the race account come from the manufacturer’s Golf II Pikes Peak history.

The verified examples establish the idea, but they do not substantiate ten distinct vehicles. A general overview mentions the twin-engine Jeep Hurricane concept and earlier twin-engine Suzuki hill-climb cars, but those leads alone do not establish enough vehicle-specific detail for a reliable entry here. A ten-item list would risk presenting unverified specifications or treating prototypes and competition builds as production cars. The three examples above are the distinct vehicles supported by the cited records.
