What CarPlay widgets do in iOS 26
CarPlay widgets put compact pieces of information on the vehicle screen. Instead of navigating through an app, you may be able to glance at information supplied by a favorite iPhone app while keeping the main CarPlay experience visible.

That distinction matters in a car. Widgets are designed for quick checks rather than extended interaction: a glance at information is less disruptive than opening an app, changing screens, and searching through menus. They do not turn the CarPlay display into a second iPhone, and they are not a replacement for a dedicated CarPlay app when you need full controls.
Apple’s iOS 26 CarPlay updates also include a redesigned appearance, a compact incoming-call view, Messages tapbacks, pinned conversations, and Live Activities for real-time updates. Widgets are the most familiar addition because they bring an iPhone-style information panel to the dashboard.
How to add widgets to CarPlay
Widget customization is performed from the iPhone, with the vehicle connected or previously configured for CarPlay:
- Open Settings on the iPhone.
- Tap General.
- Tap CarPlay.
- Select your vehicle.
- Tap Widgets.
- Tap Add Widgets.
From that screen, you can add available widgets, reorder them, or remove ones you do not want. The available choices depend on the apps and widget support available on the iPhone. Reporting on the iOS 26 feature indicates that some iPhone widgets may appear in CarPlay even when the underlying app does not have a separate native CarPlay app, although that should not be treated as a guarantee for every app or widget.
Why your vehicle may show a different widget layout
CarPlay does not show an identical widget arrangement on every dashboard. The number of widget stacks is determined in part by the vehicle’s CarPlay screen and layout. A larger or differently shaped display may show more information than a smaller screen, while a particular dashboard configuration may leave room for fewer stacks.
In practical terms, two vehicles connected to the same iPhone may not present the same number of widgets. That is expected behavior rather than evidence that one iPhone is missing the feature.

Apple also provides two controls that can affect the selection and arrangement:
- Smart Rotate: allows the widget stack to change based on context, so the most relevant widget can appear without requiring manual browsing.
- Widget Suggestions: can suggest widgets for the CarPlay setup.
If you prefer a predictable dashboard, review these controls after adding widgets and arrange the stacks manually. If you want the display to adapt, Smart Rotate and Widget Suggestions may be more useful.
Widgets are not the same as Smart Display Zoom
iOS 26 also introduces Smart Display Zoom for some CarPlay screen configurations. It addresses display scale: the feature lets the driver adjust how CarPlay content is sized on a supported vehicle screen.
Widgets address what information is visible. Smart Display Zoom addresses how large the interface appears. They are related dashboard improvements, but one does not require or automatically provide the other.
Smart Display Zoom is not available on every CarPlay display. Apple describes it as dependent on supported screen configurations, so the absence of the setting on a particular vehicle does not necessarily indicate a problem with the iPhone.

These changes improve the information density and handling of common tasks, but they do not eliminate the safety need to keep interaction brief and focused while driving.
Do you need CarPlay Ultra to use widgets?
No. Apple announced widgets and the other iOS 26 CarPlay improvements for CarPlay generally. CarPlay Ultra is a separate, more deeply integrated system for participating vehicles. It can extend across multiple vehicle displays and integrate more closely with vehicle functions, but the existence of CarPlay widgets does not mean your vehicle must support CarPlay Ultra.
The important qualification is that “standard CarPlay” still has compatibility requirements. An iPhone running iOS 26 does not add CarPlay to a vehicle that lacks a compatible CarPlay system.

CarPlay is available in selected automobiles and selected aftermarket navigation systems. Compatibility can vary by:
- vehicle make and model;
- model year;
- trim level;
- factory-installed infotainment system;
- aftermarket receiver or navigation unit;
- wired versus wireless CarPlay support; and
- country or region.
Before troubleshooting widgets, verify that the specific vehicle or head unit supports CarPlay. Use Apple’s compatible-models information and check the vehicle manufacturer’s documentation rather than assuming that every trim receives the same infotainment hardware. Apple lists CarPlay availability in the United States and many other regions, but regional feature availability can differ.
Aftermarket hardware can be a valid route for older vehicles, since Apple recognizes selected aftermarket navigation systems. But an aftermarket receiver is an upgrade decision, not a requirement created by iOS 26. Installation, vehicle-specific integration, steering-wheel controls, backup-camera support, and display compatibility all need to be checked separately.

Wired CarPlay: use the cable that matches both ends
For wired CarPlay, connect the iPhone to the vehicle’s USB port. Apple recommends using an Apple USB cable. The correct cable depends on both the iPhone connector and the vehicle-side port.
For example, a Lightning-equipped iPhone and a vehicle with a USB-C port may use a USB-C to Lightning cable for CarPlay. That cable is not the right choice for every setup:
- A USB-C iPhone needs a cable with a USB-C phone connector.
- A vehicle with a USB-A port needs a USB-A vehicle-side connector, unless a compatible adapter or different cable is specifically supported.
- A vehicle with USB-C requires a USB-C-compatible vehicle-side connection.
- The port must support the vehicle’s wired CarPlay connection; a charging-only port may not be sufficient.
Do not buy a cable solely because its name includes “CarPlay.” Match the connectors and confirm which USB port the vehicle designates for CarPlay. A cable can charge an iPhone while still failing to provide the data connection required for wired CarPlay.
What to do if widgets do not appear
- Confirm the iPhone is running iOS 26. The widget feature is part of the iOS 26 CarPlay update.
- Confirm the vehicle is the correct CarPlay profile. Go to Settings > General > CarPlay and select the vehicle you are actually using.
- Reconnect CarPlay. For a wired setup, try the vehicle’s designated USB port and a known-good data cable. For wireless setups, confirm that the iPhone is paired with the intended vehicle.
- Check the widget configuration. Return to Settings > General > CarPlay > [vehicle] > Widgets and look for available widgets, Smart Rotate, and Widget Suggestions.
- Check vehicle compatibility. An iOS update cannot add CarPlay to unsupported factory or aftermarket hardware.
- Consider screen limitations. A smaller or differently configured display may show fewer widget stacks, and Smart Display Zoom may not be offered on that screen.
If the vehicle connects to CarPlay but a particular widget is absent, that may reflect app support or availability rather than a fault with the vehicle. Not every iPhone widget is necessarily exposed in every CarPlay configuration.
