Canada’s federal EV rebate returned under a new name: the Electric Vehicle Affordability Program (EVAP). For eligible transactions dated February 16, 2026 or later, it offers up to $5,000 for battery-electric and hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles, or up to $2,500 for plug-in hybrids. The amount is not automatic: vehicle origin, final transaction value, powertrain, lease term and the date a dealer submits the eligibility assessment all matter.
How much is the Canada EV rebate?
Transport Canada’s 2026 maximums are $5,000 for battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) and fuel-cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), and $2,500 for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). These are ceilings, not guaranteed amounts for every buyer or deal. The incentive is scheduled to decline by year, as shown below; the applicable tier is determined by the date the dealership or authorized seller submits the eligibility assessment through the program portal.
| Assessment submission year | BEV or FCEV maximum | PHEV maximum |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 | Up to $5,000 | Up to $2,500 |
| 2027 | Up to $4,000 | Up to $2,000 |
| 2028 | Up to $3,000 | Up to $1,500 |
| 2029 | Up to $3,000 | Up to $1,500 |
| 2030 | Up to $2,000 | Up to $1,000 |
| 2031 | Up to $2,000 | Up to $1,000 |
These are the published annual maximums, not a promise that funds or a particular tier will remain available at every point in the program. Check Transport Canada’s current EVAP page when arranging a purchase or lease.
Which EVs qualify for the federal rebate?
EVAP covers eligible new, light-duty vehicles made in Canada or in a country that has a free-trade agreement with Canada. They must weigh under 8,500 pounds, be registered for the first time, be highway-capable and intended for public roads, have at least four functioning wheels, and meet Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. A demonstrator with fewer than 10,000 km may qualify.

Understand the $50,000 transaction-value ceiling
Most vehicles must have a final transaction value of $50,000 or less. This is not simply an advertised-MSRP limit: the program’s calculation includes MSRP, selected options, accessories, dealer fees, freight and pre-delivery inspection charges, extended warranties, subscriptions, insurance products and one set of winter tires, among other vehicle-related costs. Sales taxes, registration and licensing fees, provincial incentives, and financing or leasing costs are among the excluded items. Canadian-made vehicles are exempt from the $50,000 ceiling.
Transport Canada’s EVAP FAQ provides the detailed inclusion and exclusion rules. Ask the dealer to assess the actual transaction rather than relying on a model’s base price.

A model on the list is not a transaction guarantee
The government’s eligible-vehicle list includes models manufacturers report with an MSRP of $50,000 or less. A listed model may still fail the rules in a particular trim or deal if its final transaction value is too high or another condition is unmet. Conversely, an unlisted vehicle may qualify if it meets the program rules.
When does the federal EV rebate start, and when does it end?
EVAP applies to qualifying vehicle transactions in Canada dated February 16, 2026 or later. The program portal opened March 31, 2026, according to the Department of Finance Canada’s 2026 Spring Economic Update. The scheduled end date is March 31, 2031, but the program can end sooner if its available funding is exhausted.

Transport Canada says the program has $2.275 billion in funding over five years and reported $2.00 billion remaining as of September 1, 2026. That dated balance is not a live figure; it can change as claims are processed. The same page should be checked for the latest funding status.
How do I get the EV rebate in Canada?
The dealer or authorized seller handles the application at the point of sale; consumers do not submit an EVAP claim directly. The incentive is applied after taxes and fees to the purchase or lease agreement. The customer signs the program’s consent and attestation paperwork, while the seller submits the eligibility request and claim.

- HARDWIRED - PROFESSIONAL INSTALL: This Level 2 charger is hardwired (not plug-in), so a licensed electrician installs it per National Electrical Code. It delivers up to 48A on a dedicated 60A, 240V circuit - enough to charge most EVs fully overnight. Want more speed? You can set DIP switches 4 and 5 to unlock 50A on a dedicated 70A circuit. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that your electrical panel can support the circuit.
- CONTROL FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start and stop charging, set the charging speed (6-48A), get reminders, and track how much energy and money each charge uses. Requires a 2.4 GHz home WiFi network.

- Confirm the transaction is dated February 16, 2026 or later and ask whether the seller is enrolled and authorized to process EVAP claims.
- Have the seller check the vehicle’s powertrain, country of manufacture, new-vehicle status and final transaction value against the current program rules.
- For a lease, confirm the term and the prorated amount. The lease must be at least 12 months; terms under 48 months receive a prorated incentive, while leases of 48 months or longer can receive the full applicable amount.
- Review the eligibility assessment, sign the required consent and attestation, and verify that the approved incentive appears in the agreement after taxes and fees.
- Ask when the seller will submit the assessment. Its submission date sets the annual incentive tier, so an order or delivery date alone does not establish the amount.
Individuals may receive one EVAP incentive during the five-year program. Most businesses and organizations may receive up to ten; approved carsharing companies have a separate allowance of up to 50 per calendar year.

EVAP is a new program, not merely the old iZEV program under a different label. Transport Canada describes it as more targeted toward affordable vehicles: most eligible vehicles face a $50,000 final transaction value limit, Canadian-made vehicles are exempt from that ceiling, and the maximum incentive declines on a published annual schedule. The detailed operational rules, rather than the launch-day announcement, determine whether a particular deal qualifies.

What Carney’s auto strategy includes
Prime Minister Mark Carney announced EVAP on February 5, 2026, as one part of a five-pillar auto strategy. The other pillars cover Canadian automotive investment, stronger light-duty vehicle greenhouse-gas standards intended to replace the Electric Vehicle Availability Standard (EVAS), a trade regime for the sector, and support for workers and businesses facing immediate pressures while the industry transitions.
The government said the new standards would be more stringent for model years 2027–2032 and framed them as a technology-flexible way to cut emissions while encouraging EV adoption. That announcement sets out the policy direction; regulatory details depend on formal implementation.
In his February 5 speech, Carney described emissions-reduction goals equivalent to a 75% EV adoption rate by 2035 and 90% by 2040. These are government goals expressed as equivalencies, not forecasts or guaranteed future sales shares. He also announced $1.5 billion through the Canada Infrastructure Bank for charging and hydrogen-refuelling infrastructure, saying: “Wherever you live in Canada, charging your vehicle should become as simple as filling your gas tank.” That is an aspiration, not evidence that charging access is already equal across the country.
The 2026 Spring Economic Update says more than 90% of Canadian-made vehicles and 60% of Canadian-made auto parts are exported to the United States, and that over $6.9 billion has been announced to support the automotive sector. Those are Department of Finance Canada figures for 2026; the wider sector-support total is not EVAP’s consumer-rebate budget. The update reports $2.3 billion for EVAP, a rounded figure; Transport Canada lists the program funding more precisely as $2.275 billion.

Check for provincial or territorial incentives
Some provincial and territorial programs may be available alongside the federal incentive. Availability and eligibility vary by jurisdiction and can change, so check Transport Canada’s provincial and territorial incentives page and the relevant local program for the buyer’s location and transaction date. Do not assume a local incentive automatically applies to every vehicle or can be combined without conditions.
