In the United States, Tesla warranty coverage is split across several limited warranties; there is no single term that covers every part or repair. The current Tesla overview lists basic coverage at 4 years or 50,000 miles, restraint-system coverage at 5 years or 60,000 miles, and battery and drive-unit coverage for 8 years with a model- and trim-specific mileage cap. Time and mileage limits generally end coverage when the first limit is reached. The warranty supplied with the specific vehicle controls, so verify its terms in the Tesla app under Specs & Warranty.
What does the Tesla warranty cover?
Tesla’s U.S. new-vehicle overview separates coverage into several limited warranties. They apply to qualifying failures under their specific terms, not automatically to every repair, maintenance item, or form of damage. The figures below reflect Tesla’s overview accessed in 2026; exact terms can vary by country, vehicle, trim, model year, purchase date, and warranty version.

Tesla says its public overview is general guidance and that the warranty supplied with the vehicle is authoritative. Read Tesla’s Vehicle Warranty overview and check the individual contract before relying on a general term.
How long is the Tesla battery and drive-unit warranty?
Tesla’s current U.S. overview lists an eight-year term, with a mileage cap that depends on model and configuration. The table reflects the configurations shown on Tesla’s overview at the time accessed; lineups change, and a vehicle’s own contract takes precedence.

The 70% figure is a minimum capacity-retention term for the listed warranties, not a promise that battery capacity will remain unchanged. Confirm the exact battery and drive-unit terms for the vehicle’s model year and trim in its contract.
What does a Tesla Certified Pre-Owned warranty include?
Tesla Certified Pre-Owned vehicles purchased directly from Tesla receive any remaining Basic Vehicle Limited Warranty coverage. After that expires, Tesla’s Pre-Owned Vehicle Limited Warranty adds one year or 10,000 miles, whichever comes first. If the basic warranty has already expired at delivery, the additional period begins on delivery. The original battery and drive-unit warranty balance continues to apply.
Tesla says leased vehicles may instead receive coverage up to the term or original mileage stated in the lease. These terms describe Tesla Certified Pre-Owned vehicles, not every used Tesla or a car bought from another seller; verify the actual warranty and vehicle record.

Are Tesla parts, body, and paint repairs covered?
Tesla’s Parts, Body & Paint Repair Limited Warranty generally begins on the part’s purchase date and covers qualifying failures for 12 months or 12,500 miles, whichever comes first. Tesla lists distinct periods or exceptions for categories that include sheet metal, drive units, high-voltage batteries, Wall Connectors, touchscreens and media control units, protection films, and vinyl wraps. Check the specific part warranty for its applicable term.

Gradual ordinary wear is not the same as such a defect. Tesla also says a warranty repair does not extend the original limited warranty period for the vehicle, part, or accessory.
How do you check whether your Tesla is still under warranty?
- Open the Tesla app and select the vehicle.
- Open Specs & Warranty, then select the Warranty tab.
- Compare the vehicle’s displayed coverage with its supplied warranty contract, including the applicable mileage limit, purchase or in-service history, and any exclusions.
Whether a particular repair qualifies can depend on the vehicle and warranty version, mileage, delivery history, failed part, cause of the problem, and contract exclusions. The public overview cannot determine an individual claim.

Where must warranty service be performed?
Tesla says service covered by a Tesla limited warranty must be performed at a Tesla Service Center. For repairs or maintenance not covered by warranty, Tesla says owners may use Tesla or a preferred non-Tesla vehicle service center. Tesla also states that it is not responsible for problems caused by improper third-party repair or maintenance; that is Tesla’s stated warranty position, not a general determination of independent repair rights. What does the Tesla warranty exclude?
A limited warranty covers only the failures and conditions specified in the applicable agreement. Maintenance, consumables, normal wear, collision damage, abuse, improper maintenance, and damage caused by third-party work may be excluded depending on the contract and circumstances. Tesla’s overview specifically notes that damage caused by third-party bidirectional vehicle adapters or chargers is not covered.

What happens when the Tesla warranty expires?
When a warranty term or mileage limit ends, that coverage no longer applies. Tesla offers optional service agreements for some eligible vehicles, but these are separate contracts with their own start dates, eligibility rules, covered components, exclusions, and costs. They are not automatic extensions of every original warranty.
Vehicle Extended Service Agreement subscription
Tesla’s current support page describes a monthly vehicle ESA subscription for eligible Model S, Model 3, Model X, and Model Y vehicles; Cybertruck is described as coming in the future. Tesla says the subscription takes effect when the basic or pre-owned warranty expires, is managed in the Tesla app, and includes Tesla Roadside Assistance. Eligibility may depend on whether coverage has expired and whether an inspection is required; Tesla says terms are subject to change.
The vehicle ESA excludes categories that include maintenance and appearance-care items, wear items, wheels and tires, items with separate warranty coverage, and issues caused by accidents, abuse, or improper maintenance. Tesla also excludes branded-title or total-loss vehicles. These are examples, not a complete list; read the applicable agreement. See Tesla’s Vehicle Extended Service Agreement information.

High Voltage Battery and Drive Unit ESA
Tesla describes a separate Battery ESA for eligible Model 3 and Model Y vehicles that are still under their original Battery and Drive Unit Limited Warranty. It covers specified Tesla-made high-voltage battery and drive-unit failures for up to 24 months or 30,000 miles, whichever comes first, beginning when the original battery and drive-unit warranty expires. Tesla states a $500 deductible per service visit when at least one eligible repair or replacement is performed, and no grace period after the original warranty ends. The registered owner purchases through the app if eligible.
This Battery ESA is not the same as the general vehicle ESA: Tesla says the general subscription does not cover the high-voltage battery and drive unit. Check eligibility and current agreement terms in Tesla’s app and Battery ESA information.
