Car-to-Home Power vs. a Home Battery: What’s the Difference?

Vehicle-to-home power makes a compatible EV a mobile backup source. A stationary battery stays at home. Learn how equipment, power limits, vehicle availability, costs and utility rules affect the choice.

Car-to-home power (vehicle-to-home, or V2H) lets a compatible electric vehicle discharge energy through bidirectional charging equipment to selected household circuits. A home battery is a permanently installed storage system dedicated to the property. V2H offers mobile energy and may use a battery you already own, but it only works when the right vehicle, charger, controls, wiring and utility permissions are in place. A stationary battery remains at the house and is available whenever the system is charged.

What car-to-home power and a home battery actually are

Car-to-home power (V2H)

V2H is an energy pathway from an electric vehicle’s traction battery to a home’s electrical system. The vehicle must support bidirectional operation, and a compatible bidirectional EV charger (EVSE) and home integration equipment must control the transfer. During normal operation, the system can charge the car from the grid or another source. During an outage or a scheduled energy event, it can send power toward approved home loads.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The vehicle is part of the storage system, but it is not the entire system. A car that only accepts energy through a conventional charger cannot export power to a house through that charger. The charger, vehicle software, transfer equipment, protection devices and installation design all have to support reverse power flow.

Stationary home battery

A stationary home battery is a dedicated battery cabinet installed at the property. It normally includes battery modules, an inverter, monitoring and controls, and equipment that connects it to a main panel or a selected-loads panel. It can charge from the grid, solar or another approved source and discharge without a vehicle being present.

Stationary storage is fixed: it cannot be taken to another property for an outage. That limitation is also its strength. Once installed and charged, it is always located where the backup loads are.

How a V2H system delivers electricity

  1. Energy is stored in the vehicle. The EV battery holds direct-current energy. Its advertised capacity is a nameplate figure, not a promise that all of that energy can be delivered to household appliances.
  2. A bidirectional EVSE manages the exchange. The equipment must be designed to receive energy from the vehicle and direct it toward an external load. Ordinary one-way charging hardware does not provide this function.
  3. Home integration equipment controls the circuits. A transfer switch, energy-management controller, backup gateway or similar equipment coordinates the vehicle, house wiring and grid connection. The exact arrangement depends on the vehicle, charger, panel configuration and local electrical rules.
  4. Grid isolation protects workers and equipment. In an outage, a properly designed installation must prevent the home from energizing utility lines. The isolation method and required equipment are site-specific and must comply with electrical and utility requirements.
  5. Controls decide what runs. The system may reserve part of the battery for driving, limit export power, prioritize critical circuits or stop discharging at a configured state of charge.

Because these functions are interdependent, V2H is an engineered system rather than an adapter that turns any EV into a generator.

Do not confuse V2H with other vehicle-power terms

Term Where the energy goes What it usually means for a homeowner
V2H (vehicle-to-home) A residence Backup or managed power for household circuits through a home integration system.
V2L (vehicle-to-load) Individual appliances or portable loads Power from an outlet or accessory connection; it is not automatically a method for energizing house wiring.
V2B (vehicle-to-building) A commercial or institutional building Managed power for a larger facility, often with more complex load controls.
V2G (vehicle-to-grid) The utility grid Export under a utility program or approved interconnection arrangement; it is different from simply backing up your home.

A vehicle can support one of these functions without supporting the others. Marketing language such as “bidirectional” therefore needs to be matched to the exact destination, power level and approved equipment.

Side-by-side comparison

Decision factor Car-to-home power (V2H) Stationary home battery
Storage location The EV traction battery A dedicated battery installed at the home
Availability during an outage The compatible vehicle must be at home, connected and sufficiently charged. Driving needs compete with backup use. The system stays at the property and is available whenever it has usable charge.
Required equipment Bidirectional-capable EV, compatible EVSE, home integration and protection equipment, plus an approved installation. Battery modules, inverter and controls, home integration equipment and an approved installation.
Mobility The vehicle can potentially be moved to another compatible site. Fixed at the installation site.
Power and load control Determined by the vehicle, charger, controls and supported circuits; specifications vary by system. Determined by the battery inverter, controls and supported circuits; specifications vary by system.
Solar integration Possible when the vehicle, charger and site controls are designed to coordinate with solar equipment. Commonly configured as part of a solar-plus-storage system, subject to the selected equipment.
Utility requirements Reverse-power and interconnection rules may apply, especially for grid export. Interconnection and permitting requirements apply according to the installation and operating mode.
Primary ownership question Can the vehicle be present and reserved when the house needs it? Is a dedicated system sized for the required loads and outage duration worth installing?

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) says equipment needs and costs vary with location, system size and design. There is no universal cost winner without comparing itemized, site-specific proposals for equivalent backup performance.

Capacity is not the same as backup runtime

DOE’s mobile-storage overview gives an approximate 15–100 kWh range for light-duty EV battery sizes. That is a broad educational range, not a current model-by-model specification and not the amount a home can necessarily use. Usable energy can be lower because of reserve settings, conversion losses, temperature limits, battery-protection rules and the vehicle’s requirement to retain driving range.

For context, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s 2024 Annual Technology Baseline models a representative residential battery system at 5 kW and 12.5 kWh, using lithium-ion assumptions that include nickel manganese cobalt and lithium iron phosphate chemistries. This is a modeling reference, not a description of every installed product.

Power determines what can run at once

Energy capacity, measured in kilowatt-hours, describes how much work the battery can deliver over time. Power, measured in kilowatts, describes how much load can be supplied at a moment. A system may have enough stored energy for a long outage but still be unable to start a large motor, heat pump or electric range if its continuous or starting-power rating is too low.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Household demand is also variable. A refrigerator cycles, a well pump has a high starting surge, lights draw relatively little, and electric resistance heating can consume several times more power than a typical electronic load. The supported-load list and inverter limits matter as much as the battery’s capacity.

A practical way to estimate your needs

  1. List essential circuits. Decide whether the priority is refrigeration, lighting, communications, medical equipment, a furnace blower, a well pump or another specific load. Do not assume every circuit in the main panel will be backed up.
  2. Record running and starting demand. Use appliance labels, manufacturer data or an electrician’s measurements. Note motor-starting surges separately from normal wattage.
  3. Set an outage target. Choose the minimum period you want to cover, such as overnight or through a scheduled utility interruption. A longer target requires more usable energy, lower average demand, another charging source or all three.
  4. Subtract operating reserves. A V2H owner may reserve energy for the next trip. Both vehicle and stationary systems may stop before their nameplate capacity is empty.
  5. Ask for a supported-load schedule. The installer should identify the circuits, maximum simultaneous load, starting-power allowance and expected control behavior rather than quoting only battery size.

This process produces a site-specific design. It does not justify a universal statement such as “a battery of X kWh will run a house for Y hours.”

Compatibility checklist before buying anything

Vehicle and charger

  • Confirm that the exact vehicle trim, model year and software configuration support bidirectional discharge, not merely fast charging or an accessory outlet.
  • Confirm the approved bidirectional EVSE model and whether it can provide V2H power at your location.
  • Check the maximum continuous and starting output, operating temperature limits and required state-of-charge reserve.
  • Read the vehicle and charger warranty terms for repeated discharge, export operation and use during outages.

Home electrical system

  • Identify whether the installation backs up selected circuits or the entire service.
  • Verify panel capacity, service rating, grounding, transfer equipment and the physical location of the charger and controls.
  • Confirm how the system detects a grid outage and isolates the residence before supplying power.
  • Ask whether solar, a generator or an existing stationary battery can operate with the proposed controls.

Utility and market rules

  • Ask the serving utility whether reverse power flow or grid export requires an interconnection agreement. DOE’s managed and bidirectional charging guidance specifically directs customers to check this point.
  • Verify local permits, inspection requirements and any limits on export or participation in demand-response programs.
  • Check whether the equipment is approved for the electrical code and utility territory where it will be installed.

Compatibility may be vendor-specific. For example, GM describes a V2H enablement kit that requires a V2H-capable GM EV and states that its kit is not compatible with battery systems from other manufacturers. That example should be treated as a warning to verify every component, not as evidence that equipment is interchangeable across brands.

Installation, safety and outage behavior

A V2H or stationary-battery installation should be designed and commissioned by qualified electrical professionals. The cited DOE material does not prescribe one wiring layout for every residence, because service equipment, panel topology, local code and selected loads differ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What a proper outage sequence should address

  1. The system detects loss of utility power or receives an approved outage command.
  2. Required switching equipment isolates the home from the utility.
  3. Controls establish the backed-up circuits and enforce inverter and battery limits.
  4. The vehicle or stationary battery supplies those circuits within its continuous and surge ratings.
  5. When utility power returns, the system resynchronizes and reconnects according to its approved controls.

Ask the installer to demonstrate the outage and recovery sequence, explain which circuits remain live, and provide documentation for emergency shutdown, maintenance and fault conditions. Never connect a vehicle to a household receptacle or improvise a backfeed cable; that can energize utility lines and create a lethal hazard.

Cost and ownership: compare complete systems, not batteries alone

V2H can appear inexpensive when the vehicle is already owned, but the comparison must include the bidirectional charger, home integration equipment, electrical upgrades, permits, labor, software or service requirements and any vehicle-specific hardware. A new compatible EV may also be part of the decision.

A stationary battery quote should similarly identify the battery, inverter, controls, backup gateway or transfer equipment, installation, panel work, permits, monitoring and warranty coverage. DOE states that equipment costs depend on site location, size and design, so a single national installed-price figure would be misleading.

Questions to put on competing quotes

  • What usable energy is available after reserve settings and conversion losses?
  • What continuous and starting power is guaranteed for the circuits I selected?
  • How many hours of backup are modeled at my measured load, and what assumptions produce that estimate?
  • What happens if the vehicle leaves during an outage?
  • What maintenance, software support and warranty exclusions apply?
  • Which permits, inspections, utility approvals and service upgrades are included?
  • Can the system charge from solar during a prolonged outage, and under what conditions?

Compare proposals that promise the same supported circuits and outage target. Comparing a vehicle’s total battery capacity with a stationary system’s usable capacity, without matching power limits and controls, does not produce a meaningful price comparison.

When V2H is the better fit

  • You already own a compatible EV. The car can provide substantial mobile storage without adding a second large battery, provided the required charger and installation are available.
  • You need flexibility between locations. DOE notes that a vehicle can potentially be moved to a site before a planned outage or arrive after an unexpected outage, while stationary storage remains at its selected site.
  • Your outage plan tolerates travel trade-offs. You can reserve enough energy for driving and accept that the home may lose backup when the vehicle is away.
  • Your installer can support the complete system. Compatibility, utility approval and a suitable electrical design are prerequisites, not optional extras.

When a stationary battery is the better fit

  • You want backup that is always at home. No one has to remember to return or plug in a vehicle before an outage.
  • Your vehicle is frequently away. A commuter, work vehicle or shared car may not be available when the power fails.
  • You need predictable controls. A dedicated system can be sized around known circuits, reserve settings and solar operation without preserving driving range.
  • You want a building-centered energy system. NREL cautions that EVs are not a direct replacement for stationary building batteries because vehicle charging requirements require additional coordination of facility loads.

Can the two systems work together?

Yes, but only when the controls and electrical design support coordinated operation. A stationary battery can provide immediate, predictable backup while a connected EV adds energy capacity or extends an outage plan. The system must determine charging priority, discharge limits, reserve levels, solar behavior and what happens when the vehicle disconnects.

Do not assume that adding a V2H charger to an existing stationary battery creates a compatible hybrid system. The vehicle manufacturer, battery manufacturer, charger supplier and installer may impose specific interoperability limits. Obtain a written design showing the equipment combination, supported operating modes and warranty responsibilities.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming every EV can power a house

Most conventional charging setups are one-way. Verify bidirectional capability for the exact vehicle and EVSE, and confirm that the feature is approved in your market.

Using V2L as if it were V2H

An outlet that runs a refrigerator or tool is not automatically permitted to energize household wiring. V2H requires isolation and home integration equipment designed for that purpose.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Shopping by kWh alone

Check usable energy, continuous output, starting surge, backed-up circuits, reserve settings and control behavior. A larger energy number cannot compensate for an inverter that cannot start a required motor.

Ignoring vehicle availability

Write a rule for who may drive the EV during an outage, what reserve must remain and where the car will be parked before a forecast storm. If that plan is unrealistic, stationary storage may be the more dependable option.

Expecting a universal savings or payback figure

Rates, export rules, equipment costs, driving patterns and outage frequency differ by location. Neither the cited DOE nor NREL material supports a universal V2H savings, payback or runtime promise.

Bottom line: choose for availability, power and control

V2H is best understood as mobile storage that can serve a home when a compatible EV, bidirectional charger and properly integrated electrical system are all available. A stationary home battery is dedicated, fixed storage that remains ready at the property. Neither option wins on battery capacity alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose V2H when vehicle mobility and an existing compatible EV justify the additional equipment and when you can reserve the car for backup. Choose a stationary battery when continuous at-home availability, predictable circuit support and solar-plus-storage control matter more than mobility. In a well-designed system, the two can complement each other, but only a site-specific compatibility and load assessment can show whether that combination is practical.
