Car logos do not all have the same kind of origin story. The BMW roundel’s familiar propeller association came through later advertising; Mercedes-Benz’s emblem combines predecessor-company marks; Toyota describes an evolution in its vehicle emblem; and Audi’s four rings preserve the history of a corporate alliance. Those differences matter: a popular interpretation is not always the original meaning.
How to read a car logo’s origin story
An emblem can reflect a design choice, a later advertising interpretation, the joining of earlier brands, or a corporate event. The clearest account is the one supported by the automaker’s own history, with later explanations kept distinct from what the mark meant when it first appeared.
| Make | What the emblem depicts | What its history records |
|---|---|---|
| BMW | Blue-and-white roundel | A later propeller interpretation in advertising, not the documented original meaning |
| Mercedes-Benz | Three-pointed star and laurel wreath | The joining of Daimler and Benz marks, preceding their 1926 merger |
| Toyota | Three ovals | The evolution of the vehicle emblem and Toyota’s stated symbolism |
| Audi | Four interlinked rings | The four companies that formed Auto Union |
Does the BMW logo really represent a propeller?
BMW says its blue-and-white logo has appeared on its products since 1917. The company’s history places the propeller image later: BMW first portrayed the logo as a stylised rotating propeller in advertising materials in the late 1920s. That chronology makes the propeller a later advertising interpretation, not the original documented meaning of the emblem. BMW’s logo history and account of the propeller portrayal describe that distinction.
What do the Mercedes-Benz star and wreath stand for?
The three-pointed star was adapted for brand use by Paul and Adolf Daimler in 1909. The later Mercedes-Benz emblem brought that Daimler star together with Benz’s laurel-wreath trademark. The combined mark anticipated the two companies’ 1926 merger: it reflects the histories of both predecessor businesses rather than a single symbol created in isolation. Daimler’s star history, Mercedes-Benz’s emblem account, and the company’s historical material explain the sequence.

How did Toyota’s emblem develop?
Toyota traces its vehicle emblem from the Toyoda mark introduced in 1936 to the three-oval design introduced in 1989. The automaker also gives an account of the ovals’ symbolism. The history supports describing that stated symbolism, but not assigning separate meanings to each oval beyond what Toyota itself explains. Toyota’s emblem history covers the design’s evolution and symbolism.

Audi’s four interlinked rings represent Audi, DKW, Horch, and Wanderer—the four companies that joined to form Auto Union. Unlike an interpretation added later to explain a familiar shape, the rings record a specific corporate alliance in the emblem itself. Audi’s history of the four rings describes the companies behind them.
