The Canoo Lifestyle Vehicle was never confirmed as a current $35,000 retail offer. In a May 17, 2021 announcement, Canoo set a target price range of $34,750 to $49,950 for three trims, subject to change and excluding incentives, optional equipment and certain fees. Canoo later filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy and said it would stop operating immediately, so the figure is best understood as a historical target—not a price for ordering a new van today.
What did Canoo announce about the price?
Canoo’s May 17, 2021 release listed targeted pricing of $34,750–$49,950 for the Lifestyle Vehicle’s Delivery, Base and Premium trims. The $35,000 figure in the headline rounds the low end of that announced range; the stated starting target was $34,750. Canoo’s announcement described the figures as estimates that could change.
The stated range excluded incentives and optional equipment. The release’s pricing footnote also excluded taxes, title, license and other fees, so it was not an all-in purchase price. Canoo said reservations opened with a $100 deposit and expected the vehicle to reach market in 2022; those were plans announced at the time, not proof that retail vehicles were ultimately available at the advertised targets.
What was the Lifestyle Vehicle supposed to offer?
Canoo described the vehicle as a cabin-forward electric vehicle intended to maximize interior room on a compact footprint. Its 2021 announcement anticipated up to 300 horsepower, 332 lb-ft of peak torque and 250 miles of battery range. These were projected figures, not independently tested results or confirmed final production specifications; Canoo said specifications and performance could change. The company release also quoted CEO Tony Aquila describing the vehicle as designed for people who work and play hard and need something reliable and valuable. That was the company’s characterization, not an independent assessment.
