Canada’s former federal iZEV rebate ended on March 31, 2025, but federal EV incentives are available again. The successor Electric Vehicle Affordability Program (EVAP) applies to qualifying purchases and leases made on or after February 16, 2026. In 2026, eligible light-duty vehicles may qualify for up to $5,000, subject to vehicle, transaction and funding rules.
What happened to Canada’s federal EV rebate?
The Incentives for Zero-Emission Vehicles (iZEV) program, launched in 2019, closed on March 31, 2025. It provided point-of-sale incentives of up to $5,000 for eligible vehicles. Under its rules, longer-range plug-in hybrids with at least 50 kilometres of electric range were in the up-to-$5,000 tier; shorter-range plug-in hybrids were in the up-to-$2,500 tier. Transport Canada’s iZEV closure information confirms the formal end date.
Transport Canada had announced in January 2025 that iZEV was scheduled to pause on March 31 or when available funds were accessed. The closure page confirms March 31 as the formal end date. The department’s announcement said more than 546,000 vehicles had received incentives since the program began. That was a cumulative figure reported on January 10, 2025, not a current estimate of EV sales. (Transport Canada announcement)
Is there still an EV rebate in Canada?
Yes. EVAP is the successor federal consumer incentive. It covers eligible vehicle purchase or lease transactions made on or after February 16, 2026. Transport Canada says the program is scheduled to run until March 31, 2031, or until its funding is exhausted, whichever comes first. The current EVAP page reports that $1.92 billion remained as of October 1, 2026. That is a dated balance, not a forecast of when the money will run out.

The current federal overview says eligible light-duty EVs may receive up to $5,000 in 2026. The amount and eligibility depend on the vehicle and transaction, so the headline maximum is not a guaranteed rebate for every EV buyer. Consult the current EVAP rules and eligible vehicle list before signing a deal.
What determines whether a vehicle qualifies?
Check the specific vehicle and deal against the live federal rules. The key factors include the transaction date, whether you buy or lease, vehicle type, model eligibility, place of manufacture and transaction value. The federal policy announcement set maximum incentives of $5,000 for battery-electric and fuel-cell vehicles and $2,500 for plug-in hybrids, with a $50,000 transaction-value cap for vehicles made in countries with which Canada has free-trade agreements; Canadian-made vehicles are excepted from that cap. The current overview and detailed eligibility rules should guide any claim about a particular model or amount. (Prime Minister’s Office policy announcement; Transport Canada incentives overview)

Do provinces and territories offer EV incentives?
Transport Canada’s current incentives overview identifies Manitoba, Quebec and Yukon as offering EV-related incentives. Depending on the jurisdiction, support may apply to new or used vehicle purchases, home charger installation or shipping costs for used EV purchases. Local terms differ, and a federal incentive should not be assumed to combine with a provincial or territorial one until both programs’ rules are checked.
Provincial programs have changed over time. Transport Canada’s evaluation reports that British Columbia paused its program in May 2025, while Quebec temporarily paused its program from February to April 2025 and reduced its incentive. Those historical details are not a substitute for current local eligibility or amounts. Start with the federal jurisdictional incentives overview, then confirm current rules with the province or territory before budgeting.

Did the end of iZEV reduce EV sales?
Transport Canada’s 2026 evaluation reports that new light-duty zero-emission vehicles reached 15.4% of Canada’s market in 2024, while ZEV market share was 9.8% across the first three quarters of 2025, after the iZEV and Quebec incentive pauses. This before-and-after pattern does not prove that the federal pause alone caused the change: affordability, provincial policies and broader market conditions also matter.
The same evaluation reports that 22.9% of surveyed individual iZEV recipients and 22.5% of surveyed organizational recipients said they would have bought a ZEV without the incentive. Those responses indicate some recipients believed they would have purchased anyway; they do not establish that the program had no effect on the market. (Transport Canada program evaluation)

How to check your rebate before buying
- Confirm the deal date and format. Check that the purchase or lease falls within EVAP’s eligible period and that the transaction type qualifies.
- Look up the exact vehicle. Use Transport Canada’s live EVAP vehicle list and rules; do not rely on an old article or a model name alone.
- Check the transaction conditions. Verify the vehicle’s place of manufacture, transaction value and any applicable Canadian-made exception.
- Check your local programs. Look up your province or territory’s vehicle and charger incentives, and verify whether they can be combined with federal support.
- Get the rebate treatment in writing. Ask the dealer to show the applicable incentive and final transaction price on an itemized quote, and clarify how eligibility is handled if program funds or rules change before delivery.
EVAP is a vehicle purchase or lease incentive; it does not require you to buy a home charger. If you are planning home charging, independently check vehicle compatibility, household electrical capacity, installation needs and any local charger-program terms.
