Bugatti Chiron Successor Spied for the First Time: The V16 Prototype and What Bugatti Revealed in 2024

The first spy image of Bugatti's Chiron successor appeared in April 2024. Here is what it showed, what the June 2024 Tourbillon reveal confirmed, and which V16 figures are manufacturer claims.

The first spy image of Bugatti’s then-unnamed Chiron successor was published in April 2024, showing a camouflaged prototype and a rear end that suggested a new V16 hypercar. Two months later, Bugatti revealed the car as the Tourbillon, and engine partner Cosworth confirmed the core details of its V16. This article separates what the early spy report could actually show from what the June 2024 launch materials established.

What the April 2024 spy report showed

On April 26, 2024, The Supercar Blog published what it called the first spy image of the Chiron successor. The outlet said the picture had been posted on the Germancarforum forum. The article described the car’s visible proportions, a C-shaped side line, greenhouse and fender shapes, a rear spoiler, a diffuser, tailpipes and rear lighting. Those are the outlet’s readings of a single image, not measurements, and the report did not independently verify where the picture came from. Read The Supercar Blog’s original report for the wording it used.

What a single photo can and cannot establish

  • Visible in the image: the general body shape, the side profile, the rear layout and the presence of a camouflaged prototype.
  • Not established by the image alone: the engine type, the power output, the weight, the production trim, or whether each detail would survive to the showroom car.
  • Not independently verified in the report: the claimed forum source, the anticipated debut timing and any power expectations mentioned in the rumor-driven parts of the coverage.

What Bugatti revealed in June 2024

Bugatti unveiled the car as the Tourbillon around June 20 and 21, 2024, and presented it as the successor to the Chiron. This is the point at which the spy story could be checked against an official product. The headline changes at the reveal: the prototype is no longer an unnamed test car but a named production hypercar with a naturally aspirated V16 at its center. Coverage of the reveal, including Autocar India’s report on the Tourbillon as the Chiron successor, confirmed that identity.

The V16 engine: what Cosworth confirmed

Cosworth, which designed and manufactures the engine, published its own release on June 21, 2024. It says Bugatti approached the company in 2021 to design and build the new engine. The figures below come from that release and describe the engine on its own, before it is installed in the car.

Maximum speed 9,000 rpm Cosworth release, June 21, 2024
Engine weight 252 kg Cosworth release, June 21, 2024; a reported weight, not a measured one

Cosworth’s Managing Director of Powertrain, Bruce Wood, put the engine in emotional terms: “I think we all got goosebumps the first time we heard the roar of the Bugatti’s incredible V16 engine; it is a truly unique piece of machinery.” That is Cosworth’s own characterization of its work, not an independent assessment of how the engine performs.

The hybrid output and production plans

Autocar India reported a combined output of 1,800 hp from the V16 and three electric motors, along with a planned run of 250 cars. These are launch-era specifications and production plans as reported in June 2024. They are not results from a road test or a dyno test published by an independent party, and the spy report did not confirm them either. Readers should treat the combined figure as Bugatti’s stated system output and check it against any later independent testing before quoting it as measured performance.

How to read early spy-photo stories

A pre-reveal spy report can be useful for seeing a car’s shape, but it should be held to a narrower standard than a launch release. When you read one, check the following:

  1. Note the date of the report and the date of any official reveal, so that you do not describe an old sighting as current news.
  2. Separate what the photo shows from what the writer infers about the engine, power or timing.
  3. Look for the original source of the picture. If it is a forum or a social post, treat its provenance as unconfirmed unless the publication says how it verified it.
  4. Once a manufacturer reveals the car, compare the rumor-era claims against the official specification sheet and the partner’s release, then note which figures are still manufacturer claims.

What this story does and does not establish

The April 2024 spy report documented a camouflaged prototype whose shape pointed toward a new Bugatti hypercar. The June 2024 reveal confirmed the car’s name and its status as the Chiron successor. Cosworth’s release set out the V16’s basic specifications, and launch reporting added the hybrid output and production plans. The rest, including any road or track performance, is not established by these sources, and the figures above should be read as manufacturer and launch-report claims rather than independently measured results.
